BMW Motorrad has pulled the RS badge back out of the archive, and this time it means racing. The 2027 M 1000 RS takes the M 1000 R naked bike, drops in the more powerful engine from the M 1000 RR superbike, bolts on the RR’s footpegs and tail section, and caps production at 1,000 units worldwide. U.S. pricing is $38,395 plus destination, with deliveries expected in Q1 2027.

If you grew up around BMWs, RS probably means ReiseSport, loosely translated as “touring sport.” That is the lineage of the R 100 RS and today’s R 1300 RS. Before the 1970s, though, the letters stood for Rennsport, and they were attached to race machines such as the 1939 R 51 RS, the supercharged RS 255 Kompressor and the 1954 RS 54. We get it: that’s a bit of ancient history.

The M 1000 RS goes back to that original meaning, and BMW makes sure you notice by stamping “M 1000 Rennsport” on the black rear subframe.

Engine: 218 hp There, 205 hp Here

BMW Motorrad USA

The 999cc inline-four is the same engine found in the M 1000 RR, a machine homologated for professional racing, so it means business. It’s built to rev. An 80.0 x 49.7mm bore and stroke makes for one heck of a short-stroke design, meaning it does its best work as it spins toward the lofty 15,100 rpm redline. Lightweight titanium connecting rods and forged two-ring pistons also help that cause. ShiftCam switches between two distinct intake cam profiles, one for low-rpm manners and one for top-end power, but we shouldn’t expect a race-focused engine to be especially torque-minded at road paces. Then there’s the ridiculously high 14.5:1 compression ratio. The result is an engine that saves its best work for the upper half of the tach.

In Europe, BMW claims the RS achieves 218 hp at 14,500 rpm and 83 lb-ft of torque at 11,000 rpm. Worth noting, that 218 figure is metric horsepower; 160 kW converts to roughly 215 hp in U.S. terms. The U.S. bike is rated at 205 hp at 13,000 rpm, with the same 83 lb-ft at the same 11,000 rpm. As with the M 1000 RR, the gap comes down to EPA noise regulations. BMW Motorrad’s global release calls the RS the world’s most powerful hyper naked; the U.S. release drops that line, though an ECU reflash would make that claim quite real once again.

For those of us Stateside, history tells us that we should expect some flat spots in the powerband. Noise compliance is measured under specific test conditions, and manufacturers typically meet it by trimming fueling or timing in those zones, which leaves dips in the curve. A number of current motorcycles sold here are living with the same compromise. Tellingly, the only item on BMW’s U.S. optional-equipment list is a dealer-installed Torque Optimized Calibration, promising improved mid-range torque response. No other market requires such workarounds.

Power runs through a six-speed gearbox with a bidirectional quickshifter, an anti-hopping wet clutch and provision for a GP shift pattern. Final drive gearing is longer, too, as a smaller 45-tooth rear sprocket replaces the M 1000 R’s 47-tooth part, making the overall gearing about 4 percent taller. A full titanium exhaust and an M Endurance chain complete the package.

At a claimed 432 pounds fully fueled, even the slightly detuned U.S. model should be seriously quick; BMW claims 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds.

Chassis: An M 1000 R With RR Habits

BMW Motorrad USA

The chassis foundation is the M 1000 R with the M Competition Package: an aluminum bridge-type frame using the engine as a stressed member, a 45mm Marzocchi USD fork and a monoshock. Both ends run semi-active damping with adjustable preload, delivering 4.7 inches of travel up front and 4.6 inches at the rear. An adjustable steering stabilizer is standard.

Where things start pushing in a more performance-minded direction is with the ergonomics. The M 1000 RR’s milled, adjustable footrests are paired with a seat sitting 0.78 inches (20mm) higher than the M 1000 R’s, raising the saddle to a tall 33.46 inches. A 32.7-inch standard-height seat is optional. Raising the rider and moving the pegs back creates a more aggressive stance and biases weight toward the front tire. Matte carbon winglets with RS lettering are fitted, and BMW says they do real aerodynamic work, though it has not published a downforce figure.

M Carbon wheels, sized 3.50 x 17 front and 6.00 x 17 rear, cut rotating mass and wear Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV Corsa rubber in 120/70 and 200/55 sizes. Stopping duty falls to the M Brake package, with radial-mount, four-piston M-branded Brembo Stylema calipers gripping twin 320mm floating discs. Meanwhile, a two-piston floating caliper and a 220mm disc handle things out back.

Chassis geometry is set with a 57.8-inch (1,467mm) wheelbase, 24.2 degrees of rake and 3.8 inches (97.6mm) of trail.

Electronics and Equipment: Nothing Spared

BMW Motorrad USA

BMW is well known for its litany of options, but nothing is spared on the M 1000 RS. Riding Modes Pro, Dynamic Traction Control with Slide Control, engine-brake control (MSR), ABS Pro with Race ABS and Brake Slide Assist, Dynamic Brake Control and Hill Start Control Pro are all standard. So are cruise control, heated grips, Keyless Ride, tire pressure monitoring, Headlight Pro and a 6.5-inch color TFT with connectivity. The M Quick-Action Throttle has a short 58-degree rotation, and both the M Track Package and an M GPS Laptrigger activation code are included.

Visually, the RS wears Night Black Matte paint, a dark-clear coated brushed aluminum fuel tank, matte carbon covers throughout, a high-grip Alcantara-look seat with M embroidery and the M 1000 RR’s tail section capped by a matte carbon cover. A “1 of 1,000” plate sits on the top triple clamp.

The 2027 BMW M 1000 RS is priced at $38,395 plus destination in the U.S. Only a portion of the 1,000-unit run is headed here, sold through a pre-order program with sign-ups at bmwmotorcycles.com. U.S. arrivals are expected in Q1 2027, while European dealers get bikes from March 2027.

On paper, the RS is a well-heeled, high-performance M 1000 R with an RR heart and a sharper riding position. There are supernaked motorcycles, and then there are models like this.
