2027 Honda Passport TrailSport Gets Lifted Suspension And Beats 4Runner On Ground Clearance
Honda’s 2027 Passport TrailSport arrives at dealerships this month with the most substantial suspension overhaul the model has ever received. Ground clearance climbs to 9.65 inches — up 1.38 inches over the outgoing model — and Honda says that figure clears key rivals including the Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road, Subaru Outback Wilderness, and Ford Bronco Sport Badlands Sasquatch.
The jump in clearance isn’t the result of taller springs bolted onto an unchanged chassis. Honda engineers redesigned nearly 70% of the major suspension components — 28 parts in total — to preserve steering feel and ride quality while meaningfully improving off-road geometry. For a nameplate where TrailSport trims account for over 80% of all Passport sales, that level of engineering investment signals Honda is serious about competing in the adventure SUV segment.
What Honda Actually Changed Under the 2027 TrailSport
The redesign touches springs, dampers, control arms, stabilizer bars, and knuckles. Honda also reworked the front driveshafts and front subframe to accommodate the increased ride height and expanded wheel travel. The goal, according to Honda, was to achieve proper suspension geometry rather than simply stacking height — a distinction that matters when the same vehicle needs to handle daily commutes and weekend trail runs.
The payoff shows up in the approach, departure, and breakover angles. Approach and departure each improve by 2 degrees (now 25 degrees each), while breakover angle gains 3 degrees to reach 23 degrees. Honda calls the 2027 TrailSport and TrailSport Elite the most off-road-capable SUVs the brand has ever built. Honda engineers also report improved steering feel and response as a byproduct of the geometry work, which should make the everyday driving experience sharper as well.
TrailWatch Cameras and Heated Steering Wheel Now Standard
Two features previously reserved for the top-tier TrailSport Elite trim move to standard equipment across all TrailSport models for 2027. The TrailWatch camera system offers four views — front, rear, side, and 360-degree — and adds tire-placement graphics that help drivers position wheels around obstacles they can’t directly see, such as blind crests, deep ruts, and trail edges. For buyers who don’t want to pay Elite money but still want camera-assisted off-roading, that’s a meaningful addition.
A heated steering wheel also becomes standard on all TrailSport trims, a small but welcome upgrade for buyers in colder climates who use these vehicles year-round.
Bolder Styling and New Color Options Round Out the 2027 Changes
The exterior gets visual updates that reinforce the taller stance. More pronounced fender flares front and rear, a resculpted lower front fascia, and a pair of amber LED hood scoop lights join the lineup — the amber accent echoing the Passport’s existing amber daytime running lights for a cohesive look. The Blackout Package, available on all TrailSport trims, adds new black front and rear fascias to complement its existing black 18-inch alloy wheels and Honda badges, giving it a more aggressive appearance than before.
On the color front, Smoke Blue Pearl replaces Obsidian Blue Pearl. The new shade debuted on the 2026 Honda Pilot and makes its way to the Passport lineup for 2027. Inside, the only change beyond the standard heated steering wheel is the TrailWatch upgrade noted above — the cabin otherwise carries over from the current generation.
Honda also notes that the 2027 Passport TrailSport Elite will be exported to Japan early next year, an unusual move that reflects the model’s growing reputation beyond North America.
Built in Alabama, Powered by a 3.5-Liter V6
The 2027 Passport TrailSport continues to be assembled exclusively at Honda’s Alabama Auto Plant in Lincoln, Alabama, which also produces the Ridgeline, Odyssey, and Pilot. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is manufactured at the same facility. Honda has built more than 10.5 million light trucks in the U.S. since 2001, with over 6.5 million coming from Alabama. The plant celebrates 25 years of operation next month.
The 2027 Passport TrailSport begins arriving at dealerships later this month. Honda has not announced pricing changes alongside this update.
