No matter which way you cut it, sedans are always going to be the more economical bet. Why? Well, they have an overall smaller footprint when it comes to size and material needs. They also end up having much smaller engines and don’t cost nearly as much as some SUVs to produce. Take one of the most popular compact sedans, the Toyota Corolla. It has a starting MSRP of around $23,325 and only topped out at $29,540. Most compact SUVs have a starting MSRP of around $30,000, but you can get a fully loaded compact sedan for the same price.

Sedans Can Still Deliver

The sedan in question comes in two different body styles, a hatchback as well as the obvious sedan. It comes with two different powertrains, one turbocharged and one not, and has an available all-wheel-drive drivetrain. That’s something that the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla cannot offer in their gas-powered-only versions. Did we also mention this was an IIHS Top Safety Pick+? But wait, there’s more! It also drives like a premium sedan and has an interior like one too, but with a standard price tag.

Modest Price Tags, Big Value

Believe it or not, this compact is only ~$1,000 more than the aforementioned Toyota Corolla for the base model. It does get up there pretty steeply with a $36,940 top of the line, but we promise it’s well worth it. Others agree — the base model’s non-turbocharged engine has left a lot of reviewers wanting more, and they suggest buying the turbocharged engine instead. Other reviewers have also preferred the hatchback’s looks and cargo capacity, but we have also noted that there are severe visibility issues. This is the only other non-SUV that they offer (other than the MX-5 Miata) and is also one of the only models they offer that comes with front-wheel drive standard.

How The Current Mazda3 Became The Class Benchmark

Of course, the car in question is the Mazda3. The first generation came out way back in 2004 for that model year. We are currently in the fourth generation, and even though it probably needs a refresh at the very least, it still holds up to this day. The fourth generation builds off of the third with a sleeker exterior and an even more premium interior.

The engines that we mentioned are the 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine that’s either turbocharged or naturally aspirated. The naturally aspirated version makes 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. It does come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, but there is only one trim that still has the six-speed manual available. The turbocharged variant has 227 horsepower with regular gasoline but turns it up to 250 horsepower with premium gas.

A Cabin To Knock Your Socks Off

While this generation has needed a facelift at the very least, what Mazda is really good about is adding new trims that feature entirely different colors and interior materials to keep it fresh. The Carbon Turbo trim is no longer available, but you can still get it for the naturally aspirated version.

The base model is well outfitted with an eight-speaker sound system, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The more top of the line premium versions come with larger alloy wheels, leather-trimmed seats, and the top of the line comes with a Bose premium sound system and a 360-degree camera.

Drivability Like A Sports Car

JD Power has referred to it as one of the best small cars available in terms of style, quality, and its enjoyable driving dynamics. The Mazda3 also comes with something called G-Vectoring Control, which is a system that modulates power delivery based on steering input. According to Mazda, this also helps reduce driving fatigue and offers a smoother ride overall. The Mazda3 has a pretty hefty curb weight of between 3,086 to 3,397 depending, but it has a much lower center of gravity than most and has been noted to handle well. The only thing we’d like to see from this powerhouse is a hybrid.

What Does This Segment Look Like?

Honestly, this segment is somewhat boring. These daily drivers are not meant to be tossed around in cars that are fun from A to B; they’re meant to be humdrum commuters that are safe, reliable, and efficient. Of course, there are exceptions, like the Toyota GR Corolla, which is a blistered version of the ho-hum Corolla. They’re also dwindling. The Volkswagen Jetta is set to be discontinued, but, on the flip side, cars like the Kia K4 are doing well sales-wise.

Why The Acura Integra Is The Mazda3’s Real Rival — Not The Civic Or Corolla

From a segment standpoint, the 2026 Mazda3’s main competitors are the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Hyundai Elantra. However, in our opinion, from a technical standpoint, the Acura Integra is more kin to the offerings of the Mazda3.

The Acura Integra is more premium than it is luxury and is viewed as more sporty than the Civic, even though the Civic offers sporty trims. It’s also a “luxury car” that has a starting MSRP of $33,400 and has a top of the line price of $39,200 (the Type S sits around $53,900). It actually comes with a much smaller turbocharged 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder that produces 200 horsepower. At least it’s a direct lift from the Honda Civic Si. Ironically enough, the Acura Integra is considered to be a hatchback as well and has more cargo capacity than even the Mazda3 hatchback, with 24 cubic feet as opposed to the Mazda’s 20 cubic feet. The Mazda3’s sedan variant only has about 13 cubic feet of storage.

IIHS Top Safety Pick+ And Low Repair Costs

Probably one of the biggest concerns of consumers these days has to do with the overall safety of smaller sedans like compacts. Because surrounding cars are getting bigger by the day, compact drivers feel less safe on the road in their much smaller vehicles. The Mazda3 is actually a very good example of how this isn’t always necessarily the case and proves to be one of the safer choices in this segment.

The Mazda 3 Doesn’t Skimp On Safety

Mazda refers to its safety systems as i-Activesense, and it now comes standard on all of their Mazda3 products. This includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking mitigation, lane departure warning, and much more. The last time that IIHS tested the Mazda3 was for the 2024 model year, and it received their highest honor, the Top Safety Pick+ award for that year. The only thing that scored below “good” was the headlights on some models.

Its Repair Costs Beat The Segment Average By $93/Year

The Mazda3 goes above and beyond, not only in safety, but also in reliability. RepairPal gave it a 4.0 out of 5.0. J.D. Power, however, did give it a more average score of 78 out of 100 for the overall vehicle experience, with 77 for the quality and reliability segment. Annually, you can expect to spend around $433, which is comparably lower than other vehicles in this segment. There have been a number of recalls for this model, but the last one was in 2025 for the airbag’s software control module.
