American Sports Bikes More Powerful Than A Japanese Sports Bike

American motorcycle manufacturers have long been celebrated for thunderous torque delivered at lazy revs — characteristics that define great cruisers and touring machines but seem fundamentally at odds with the screaming, high-horsepower demands of a proper sports bike. That perception began to crack the moment Erik Buell reimagined the humble Sportster engine as the heart of a genuine performance machine. His early bikes proved that a big V-twin in the right chassis could embarrass the establishment, but it was his purpose-built V-twin superbikes that truly captured the imagination — and the stopwatch.

Other manufacturers have pursued entirely different paths to power. Some have gone electric, others have bolted in engines that have absolutely no business living inside a motorcycle frame. What unites every machine on this list is that each one is uniquely American and each one makes more power than the benchmark Japanese sports bike — the Suzuki GSX-R750. The motorcycles on this list are all (surprisingly) street legal and rated according to horsepower.

The first thing that stands out with the MST-R is that incredible transverse V4 engine — a masterpiece unto itself, engineered like a scaled-down Chevy LS V8. Everything else on the bike reads like a premium aftermarket wish list made standard: Öhlins suspension, Akrapovič exhaust, and top-shelf componentry throughout. This is a motorcycle that arrived fully loaded straight from the factory. Unfortunately, Motus only sold a handful of bikes between 2014 and 2018, so tracking one down today will not be easy — or inexpensive.

Bring A Trailer

When Harley-Davidson shuttered Buell in 2009, it felt as though all the development work poured into the 1125R sports bike had been wasted. Thankfully, EBR (Erik Buell Racing) rose from Buell’s ashes and used that model as the foundation for the 1190RS. The Rotax 1125 engine — co-developed with Buell — was bored out to 1190cc, pushing output from around 145 horsepower to 175 horsepower. Of the 100 1190RS sports bikes built, only a small number of ultra-limited Carbon Edition models were produced, making this a seriously rare machine.

Lightning Strike R

Lightning Motorcycles

One look at Lightning’s build quality and any confidence you had in the brand may begin to waver. But what it lacks in fit-and-finish refinement, it more than compensates for with sheer electric performance. Electric motorcycle startups have proven to be a precarious business, especially at the expensive superbike end of the market. Lightning has remained operational and continues to take orders, though the total number of bikes delivered to customers remains genuinely difficult to pin down.

Roehr 1250 SC

Power: 180 Horsepower

HotCars

Ever wondered what it would be like to bolt a supercharger onto a V-Rod? That is exactly what the Roehr 1250 SC delivered. The V-Rod engine’s considerable mass made achieving a balanced chassis no easy feat, and the supercharger added further cost and complexity — by the time everything was accounted for, buyers were looking at around $50,000. Sadly, the SC arrived just as the recession hit, and the few reservations that had been placed were all withdrawn, killing the project before it could gain traction.

Where the RS was effectively a race bike with lights bolted on, the 1190RX was intended to be a genuine production motorcycle for the street. Despite earning widespread critical acclaim upon release, it remained more expensive than equally powerful mainstream rivals — a gap that ultimately proved fatal for the company. It was a difficult end to Erik Buell’s run as an independent manufacturer, but his legacy endures through these bikes and everything that has followed in their wake.

Buell Hammerhead

Buell is most certainly back, just without the man himself. The 1190RX essentially carries over here with revised bodywork and a new name. As mainstream sports bike manufacturers continue to move away from the V-twin configuration, the Hammerhead offers a decidedly different riding experience — raw, unfiltered, and stripped of rider aids. With 185 horsepower and over 100 pound-feet of torque, it is emphatically not a machine for the inexperienced or the faint of heart.

Technically, Damon is a Canadian company, but it earns its place on this list. Like Lightning, Damon has navigated a turbulent road, yet remains operational. Of all the electric superbikes vying for attention, the HyperSport may be the most ambitious of the bunch. Adjustable ergonomics and a Tesla Autopilot-inspired CoPilot warning system give it genuine technological credibility. As with most machines in this segment, price remains a significant barrier — committing serious money to an unproven quantity is a tough ask for most buyers.

Arguably one of the most mythical motorcycles in existence. While the LS-218’s status as a record-setting electric motorcycle has been widely reported, precious few riders have actually had the privilege of throwing a leg over one. Part of that is down to the bike’s exclusive nature, but it does raise a genuine question about whether this represents a sustainable business model. Time will tell — and enthusiasts everywhere are hoping to see a full production version become a reality.

MTT Y2K

MTT is not a motorcycle manufacturer. Marine Turbine Technologies, as the name suggests, specializes in gas turbine engines. So, naturally, someone decided to install one of the smaller turbine units inside a motorcycle frame, giving birth to the Y2K — a legitimate, street-legal machine powered by an actual jet engine. Technically it is sourced from a retired helicopter, but the effect on the road is no less extraordinary.

MTT 420 RR

Power: 420 Horsepower

MTT

Yes, MTT built a new version — the 420 RR — and it is available to order directly from the company. As you might expect, it is fantastically expensive; an actual helicopter might well cost less. This is also one of those rare machines where the manufacturer selects the customer, not the other way around — for obvious reasons, it is extraordinarily dangerous in the wrong hands. The turbine units themselves are all refurbished but come with a lifetime warranty, which makes proper stewardship essential. Neglected maintenance or the wrong fuel — the engine will run on almost anything, including diesel — can cause severe damage to the turbine.
