Ducati’s second-generation DesertX V2 is about to gain a Rally variant. A revised Executive Order from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) certifies a 2027 DesertX Rally powered by the 890cc V2 engine used in the DesertX V2 and several other current Ducatis, including the Multistrada V2, Streetfighter V2, Panigale V2, Hypermotard V2, and of course, the Monster V2.

The original order for the 890cc DesertX, dated March 2, 2026, listed only the standard model at the time. The revised order, M-030-0374-1, was signed Sept. 25, 2026. Its emissions data is unchanged, but the DesertX Rally now appears on the list of certified models. That makes it an all-new model rather than a carryover of the current DesertX Rally, which uses the older 937cc engine.

CARB

The order lists both the DesertX and DesertX Rally twice, each pair split by test weight (EIM) and evaporative family, which covers the fuel system. The order doesn’t say what separates the two. The previous 937cc DesertX orders showed the same split, likely to account for Ducati’s optional auxiliary fuel tank.

The V2 Rally also signals that the 937cc DesertX is finally on its way out. Ducati’s North American website still lists the 937cc DesertX, DesertX Rally and DesertX Discovery alongside the 890cc DesertX V2, and a V2 Rally would likely replace its older counterpart. That would leave the travel-focused Discovery as the only model without a V2 version in the filings. Even that may not be the case. Executive Orders don’t always use Ducati’s marketing names, and the first-generation Discovery never appeared by name in a CARB order. A V2 Discovery could be covered by one of the DesertX listings here, as long as its weight and fuel system match.

Beyond that, the EO doesn’t tell us much about the Rally. CARB regulates air pollution, so, its orders only certify that a motorcycle’s engine, emission controls, and fuel system, meet California’s standards. Suspension, chassis, brakes and rider aids fall outside its authority, meaning that information is never in these filings.

Still, the outgoing model offers a good preview. The first-generation DesertX Rally pushed the standard bike’s off-road focus further with upgraded suspension and extra protection, and at $23,995 it sits at the top of the current DesertX lineup. We expect the DesertX V2 Rally to follow the same recipe, pairing the 890cc V2 engine with more capable, likely longer-travel suspension and added off-road hardware, making it the most off-road-focused member of the new DesertX family.

When Will We See It?

Ducati’s annual World Première reveal series is already under way for 2027 model-year motorcycles. On Oct. 1, Ducati presented the 2027 Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour, a fully loaded tourer with radar, heated seats and 60-liter panniers, arriving at U.S. dealers in February 2027 at $30,995.

The last DesertX Rally offers a useful timeline. It first appeared in a CARB order dated May 31, 2023, and Ducati revealed it that October. With EICMA opening in Milan in early November, the V2 Rally could break cover in an upcoming World Première episode or at the show itself.
