Toyota’s Retro Land Cruiser Headlights Have A Hidden Advantage

Toyota just confirmed a factory-backed retrofit that lets J250 Land Cruiser owners swap their stock square headlights for the round, retro-styled units once reserved for the base 1958 and First Edition trims. The catch is simple and familiar: it’s only available in Japan, through Toyota Upgrade Factory, the Kinto-run program that handles genuine dealer-installed upgrades for Toyota’s domestic lineup.

For U.S. Land Cruiser and Lexus GX owners who’ve already watched the 75th Anniversary model and other heritage perks stay overseas, this one stings a little more. The round headlight design isn’t just a styling callback to the FJ40 era. According to IIHS testing, it actually performs better than the square units on the exact same vehicle.

What The Retrofit Actually Replaces

The 250-series Land Cruiser launched with its styling split by trim. In the US, the base 1958 and First Edition trims got round headlights, while every other trim above them got square units. In many overseas markets, Toyota only offered the square design, full stop. The new retrofit undoes that split retroactively for Japanese VX and VX First Edition models built from April 2024 onward, including the April 2026 update.

It’s a full assembly swap, not a cosmetic overlay. Technicians pull the front bumper, remove the original triple-reflector headlamps, install the round units, and reprogram the ECU to match. The new lights carry automatic leveling, LED clearance lamps, and daytime running lights built around the Land Cruiser badge, along with larger amber side indicators that fill out the front fascia and line up with the grille’s lower edge. Toyota prices the job at ¥204,600, about $1,296 at current exchange rates, covering parts, labor, and a three-year or 60,000-km warranty. Installation runs roughly half a day to a full day, with about a month needed to book an appointment.

The Round Design Isn’t Just Nostalgia, It Tested Better

IIHS headlight testing on the 2026 Land Cruiser backs up the retrofit’s appeal beyond looks. The 1958 trim’s round LED projector headlights earned an overall “Good” rating, with good visibility on both sides of the road on straightaways and in all four curve tests. The standard trim’s rectangular LED projectors managed only a “Marginal” rating, with inadequate illumination on both sides of the straightaway and on both left curves. Both setups use LED projectors and high-beam assist, so the gap comes down to the lighting pattern itself, not the underlying tech. That makes this one of the rare cases where the heritage-styling option is also the objectively safer one.

A Pattern U.S. Buyers Keep Running Into

This retrofit lands on a familiar nerve for American Land Cruiser owners. Toyota kept the 75th Anniversary Land Cruiser out of U.S. showrooms, and regional exclusives have become routine across Toyota’s lineup rather than the exception. Toyota hasn’t confirmed whether the round-headlight retrofit will reach New Zealand, let alone U.S. dealers or TRD’s accessory catalog. For now, the program is explicitly scoped to Japan’s domestic VX models, with no stated plans to expand it.

That leaves American owners of the upscale Land Cruiser trims, and Lexus GX owners watching for similar heritage treatments, with a genuine open question rather than a denial. Toyota hasn’t ruled out a U.S. version of the kit; it simply hasn’t said yes.
