Some custom cars are built to win trophies. Others are built to dominate drag strips or cruise to weekend shows. Then there’s the Rivision—a completely bonkers Buick Riviera that somehow does all three while looking like it rolled out of an alternate universe where GM built supercars instead of muscle cars.

Built by master fabricator JF Launier of JF Kustoms, this incredible machine started life as a rusty $400 1963/64 Buick Riviera before being transformed into one of the most celebrated custom cars on the planet. It took over 22,000 hours to build, won the prestigious Ridler Award in 2014, has appeared on Rust Valley Restorers, and despite being worth an estimated $3 million today, it’s still driven hard. Burnouts? Check. Donuts? Absolutely. Even track days aren’t off the table.

This Buick Riviera Restomod Render Turns a Classic Into a Widebody Monster

The original design was perfect, but that doesn’t mean builders can’t have fun. This render shows what’s possible with the radical Riviera.

A $400 Rust Bucket Became A Twin-Turbo Supercar

Calling the Rivision a “restomod” almost feels insulting because there’s barely any original Riviera left. JF Launier hand-built almost every panel on the car, reshaping the classic Buick into something that looks like a mash-up of a C2 Corvette, a Le Mans racer, and a modern hypercar.

Power comes from a heavily modified 6.0-liter iron-block LS V8 fitted with twin rear-mounted turbochargers pushing around 20 psi of boost. Even before the boost kicks in, the engine makes around 500 horsepower, while the full setup has produced an astonishing 894 horsepower at the wheels on the dyno. That’s enough to launch this handcrafted masterpiece well into supercar territory.

The engineering gets even crazier. The engine sits almost 11 inches behind the front axle for near-perfect weight distribution, while the twin turbos are mounted in the rear of the car with the compressed air actually traveling through exposed pipes inside the cabin before reaching the engine. It’s one of the wildest plumbing layouts you’ll ever see, but somehow it works beautifully.

Unlike most six-figure show cars, the Rivision isn’t afraid to stretch its legs either. Launier has driven it flat out to 175 mph, competed in the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge, and regularly takes it on road trips with over 1,300 miles already on the odometer.

Every Single Detail Was Handmade

What really separates the Rivision from almost every custom build is the sheer obsession behind its construction. Without modern 3D scanning or CAD software, Launier shaped virtually everything by hand using traditional fabrication techniques. The body was extensively widened, stretched, and sculpted on an English wheel. The custom billet wheels, mirrors, grille, tail lights, door handles, and even the hood straps were all designed specifically for this one-off creation.

Even the tiny details are ridiculous. More than 2,000 individual fasteners were removed, machined on a lathe, polished by hand, and reinstalled simply because Launier didn’t want a single store-bought part left untouched. Custom copper accents run throughout the car, every panel gap was perfected for Ridler judging, and even hidden components underneath the car received concours-level finishes despite almost nobody ever seeing them.

Perhaps the craziest part is how the project nearly never happened at all. Launier poured roughly $300,000 of his own money into the build over six years, eventually remortgaging both his home and his parents’ house just to finish the project before the Ridler competition. It was an enormous gamble—but one that ultimately paid off with one of the most iconic custom cars ever built.

HotCars Take

The Rivision is proof that passion still beats budgets. Sure, today’s builders have access to CAD software, CNC machining, and 3D printing, but this Buick reminds us what true craftsmanship looks like. Every curve, every bracket, and every tiny piece of trim was shaped by human hands, and somehow it all comes together into a car that’s just as happy ripping donuts as it is sitting under the bright lights of Detroit Autorama. In an era where many six-figure builds are trailer queens, the fact that this $3 million masterpiece gets driven hard makes us love it even more.
