There’s a strange point where adding more horsepower stops making a motorcycle more exciting on the road and starts making it harder to use. Modern liter bikes can put close to 200 horsepower under your right wrist, but accessing even a decent chunk of that performance can mean reaching very high speeds very quickly. A lighter middleweight works differently. Shorter bursts of acceleration, harder braking, quick direction changes, and an engine you can actually rev out can make considerably less power seem much more dramatic from the saddle.
Peak output is one of the easiest motorcycle specifications to understand, which is probably why we put so much weight on it. More horsepower generally means stronger acceleration and a higher potential top speed. But that number tells you almost nothing about how frequently you’ll be able to access that performance, how the engine delivers it, or what the rest of the motorcycle does when the road stops being straight.
Weight, gearing, throttle response, torque delivery, riding position, engine character, and even how eagerly the chassis reacts all change your perception of speed. A much more powerful motorcycle loafing along at a fraction of its capability can actually be less intense than a smaller one constantly asking you to shift, brake, lean, and get back on the throttle. That’s particularly noticeable away from highways and big racetracks.
This is where middleweight sports bikes have an advantage that doesn’t translate neatly into a dyno chart. You can spend more time working through the engine’s useful rev range without immediately arriving at speeds where self-preservation starts taking over. There are more opportunities to open the throttle properly, run through a gear or two, brake for a corner, and repeat the process instead of treating the accelerator like a switch that must be used sparingly.
The best bikes in this category aren’t simply superbikes with performance removed. Their lower output becomes part of the appeal when the chassis, gearing, and engine are designed around using it. That shifts the experience away from managing an enormous reserve of speed and toward extracting what the motorcycle actually has. Once weight comes into the picture, the distinction becomes even more obvious.
Engine output only has to do one job in a straight line: accelerate the combined mass of the bike and rider. Less motorcycle means every horsepower has less work to do, but the benefits continue after you close the throttle. Lower weight also helps a bike slow down, turn in, transition from one side to the other, and respond to corrections with less physical effort from the person holding the handlebars.
That matters enormously on a tight road or a technical track. A bike hovering around the 400-pound mark can change direction with a willingness that heavier, considerably more powerful machines struggle to replicate. You don’t need an enormous straight to appreciate it either. The sensation comes from how quickly everything happens between braking for one corner and accelerating toward the next, which is exactly where one Italian middleweight has built its reputation.
The latest Aprilia RS 660’s headline numbers initially look fairly sensible. Its liquid-cooled 659cc parallel twin makes 105 horsepower at 10,400rpm and 51.6 pound-feet at 8,400rpm, while the complete motorcycle weighs just 403 pounds wet. That works out to roughly one horsepower for every 3.8 pounds of motorcycle before the rider climbs aboard.
The engine uses four valves per cylinder, an 81mm bore and 63.93mm stroke, 52mm throttle bodies, and ride-by-wire throttle control. Aprilia pairs it with a six-speed gearbox, a multi-plate wet slipper clutch, and its bidirectional Aprilia Quick Shift system. None of those individual numbers scream superbike, but 105 horsepower becomes a very different proposition when there simply isn’t much mass for it to move.
That powertrain sits in an aluminum twin-spar frame rather than a simpler steel chassis, helping keep the whole package compact and light. Aprilia has also updated the bodywork with aerodynamics developed using ideas from its MotoGP program. A prominent wing sits beneath the windshield, accompanied by smaller aerodynamic appendages and double-layer side fairings intended to clean up airflow and improve high-speed stability.
The standard RS 660 backs up the lightweight chassis with a 41mm inverted Kayaba fork adjustable for preload and rebound, offering 4.7 inches of travel. The rear uses an adjustable Kayaba monoshock controlling an asymmetric aluminum swingarm, with 5.1 inches of rear-wheel travel. It’s a fairly serious suspension package for a road-oriented middleweight without pushing the standard model into the more expensive hardware fitted to the Factory version.
Braking comes from twin 320mm floating front discs squeezed by Brembo radial calipers, while a 220mm rear disc uses another Brembo caliper. The cast 17-inch wheels measure 3.5 inches wide up front and 5.5 inches at the rear, wearing 120/70ZR17 and 180/55ZR17 tires respectively. Again, none of this exists to chase a dyno number. It’s there so the motorcycle can shed speed and change direction just as eagerly as it accelerates.
The RS 660’s electronic package is another reason the motorcycle comes across as something more serious than its displacement suggests. A six-axis inertial measurement unit feeds Aprilia’s APRC system, which includes adjustable traction control, wheelie control, engine-brake management, selectable engine maps, launch control, cruise control, and five riding modes. The same IMU also supports multi-map cornering ABS with rear-wheel lift mitigation.
These systems aren’t merely there to keep an absurd horsepower figure under control. They let the rider access more of the performance that’s actually available. The quickshifter keeps acceleration flowing without clutch work, the configurable maps alter how the engine responds, and the traction and wheelie systems can be tuned around the road or track. It’s technology that encourages you to use the motorcycle harder rather than constantly reminding you how much performance you’re leaving untouched.
There’s a useful side to the package, too. The RS 660 has cruise control, full-LED lighting and indicators, a 5-inch TFT instrument display, backlit switchgear, and braided brake hoses as standard. Seat height is 32.3 inches, while the fuel tank carries roughly 4 gallons. Those aren’t glamorous specifications, but they reinforce the idea that this is still supposed to function as a road motorcycle instead of a barely civilized track machine.
Put the RS 660 next to a modern liter bike, and there isn’t much mystery about which one wins a drag race. Aprilia itself quotes a top speed of around 140 miles per hour for the 105-horsepower RS 660 Factory, and the standard machine shares the same basic engine output. There are plenty of motorcycles that will accelerate harder and keep pulling long after the Aprilia has used most of what it has.
But that misses the point. The RS 660 gives the rider enough performance to be properly fast while packaging it in a motorcycle light enough to make acceleration, braking, and direction changes happen with very little delay. You’re more likely to use the engine, work the gearbox, lean on the brakes, and carry momentum rather than spending the entire ride managing a huge performance reserve.
That’s why 105 horsepower can leave a bigger impression than the number suggests. The RS 660 isn’t trying to convince anyone that it’s a 200-horsepower superbike. Its trick is making its available performance easy to reach and entertaining to exploit. When nearly every throttle opening, gear change, braking zone, and corner gives the rider something to do, the stopwatch becomes a lot less important than how fast the whole experience seems from behind the screen.
