Yamaha is stepping into the adventure scooter segment with the all-new 2027 RW700 and RW700 Explore, two crossover models combining the convenience of a maxi-scooter with hardware inspired by the adventure motorcycle world. Positioned between the road-focused TMAX and the off-road-oriented Ténéré 700, the RW700 introduces a new direction for Yamaha’s scooter lineup and takes direct aim at the Honda X-ADV.
Both models share Yamaha’s 689cc CP2 parallel-twin engine, a six-speed automated manual transmission, and an electronics package designed for pavement and gravel. The RW700 Explore builds on the standard model with additional suspension adjustment and touring equipment. European availability is expected in spring 2027, but Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. hasn’t announced US pricing or confirmed whether either version will reach American dealerships.
Powering both RW700 variants is Yamaha’s liquid-cooled, 689cc CP2 parallel-twin, an engine already used in the MT-07, YZF-R7, and Ténéré 700. Its 270-degree crankshaft configuration remains intact, although Yamaha has given the RW700 its own output figures. The engine produces a claimed 68.4 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 48 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque arriving between 6,500 and 6,750 rpm. Power reaches the rear wheel through a chain final drive.
Instead of the CVT used by conventional scooters, the RW700 gets Yamaha’s Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT). This six-speed setup ditches the clutch lever and conventional foot shifter, allowing riders to select gears using handlebar-mounted switches or leave shifting entirely to the electronics. The system receives revised clutch damping and shift mechanisms, along with transmission programming specifically developed for riding on loose surfaces.
The RW700 features a tubular steel frame paired with an aluminum swingarm and motorcycle-style suspension. A 41mm inverted fork provides 6.3 inches of travel, while a rear monoshock offers 6.1 inches. The bike rolls on tubeless spoked wheels measuring 17 inches up front and 15 inches at the rear, wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires sized 120/70 and 160/60, respectively.
Braking hardware consists of dual 298mm front discs with radially mounted four-piston calipers and a single 267mm rear disc. The standard RW700 weighs a claimed 487.2 pounds wet, with a 31.9-inch seat height, 6.7 inches of ground clearance, and a 3.7-gallon fuel tank. Those specifications underline Yamaha’s intention to offer something more versatile than a conventional urban scooter, without abandoning the accessibility of its feet-forward layout.
Would-be owners will find fold-out footboards for relaxed riding alongside centrally positioned footpegs designed for standing over uneven ground. The latter feature removable rubber inserts and four-position adjustment, while an aluminum skid plate and handguards add protection. Yamaha also provides illuminated underseat storage designed to accommodate a full-face helmet, giving the RW700 some of the practicality expected from its maxi-scooter relatives.
A six-axis IMU supports the RW700’s lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, cornering ABS, brake control, and engine-braking management. Five riding modes are divided between Street, Sport, and Eco settings for pavement, and Explore and Explore+ settings for loose surfaces. Rear ABS can be disabled in the gravel-oriented modes, while the automated transmission uses dedicated programming to manage shifting during wheelspin and sliding.
The electronics package also includes cruise control, a speed limiter, keyless ignition, and a five-inch color TFT display with smartphone connectivity and Garmin StreetCross navigation. A USB-C charging port, LED lighting, and self-canceling turn signals round out the equipment list.
The RW700 Explore retains the same engine, transmission, chassis, and major electronics but adds front suspension adjustment, including 15mm of preload adjustment and 11 rebound damping settings. It also receives heated grips and a heated rider’s seat, each offering 10 adjustment levels, along with a center stand and backlit switchgear. These upgrades increase claimed wet weight to 493.8 pounds, just 6.6 pounds above the standard model.
The two versions also receive distinct color choices. The standard RW700 comes in Sage Blue and Power Grey, while the Explore swaps those finishes for Forest Green and Midnight Black. The additional equipment positions the Explore as the touring-oriented option without changing the RW700’s core mechanical package.
The RW700 enters a category shaped largely by Honda’s X-ADV, which combines adventure motorcycle styling with an automatic transmission and everyday scooter practicality. Yamaha takes a different mechanical route with its CP2 engine and Y-AMT gearbox, while offering rider aids and adjustable ergonomics intended to broaden its usefulness beyond paved roads.
For commuters who want automatic shifting but aren’t interested in giving up motorcycle-style hardware, the RW700 presents an alternative to both the TMAX and Ténéré 700. The Explore adds equipment aimed at longer trips and changing weather conditions. Pricing will be particularly important in determining how Yamaha’s new adventure scooters stack up against their established rivals, especially if the company eventually brings them to the United States.
