Cadillac was in a pretty weird spot in the late 2000s. Newly removed from its status as the official car of “gramps” and “uncs” nationwide, the firm was struggling to adapt to a new reality. A reality where giant land barges with enough leather to liquidate a cattle farm simply wouldn’t cut it anymore, and that led Caddy to do things it simply never attempted to do before. It meant pairing modern, downsized facsimiles of traditional American land barges with engines far more advanced than what the ownership base had come to expect. For people still stuck in the 8.2-liter V8 years, what Cadillac had in store in the engine department was, well, unexpected.
It wouldn’t be hyperbolic to say Cadillac was on the ropes leading into the new millennium. After decades of languishing at the hands of far superior German and Japanese luxury cars, the dark days of the Cavalier-based Cimarron and the Seville that looked like a dog taking number two needed to be replaced. However, Cadillac’s plan going forward was a topic of fierce debate going into the 1990s. At a time when the brand probably would’ve gone under if nothing changed, a GM Chief Designer by the name of Kip Wasenko had the ambition to challenge Lexus and BMW in a far more direct way.
Wasenko’s design team featured a who’s who of great minds. The team included famous faces like Mike Torpey, the eventual designer of the Kia Soul; Simon Cox, a British native who penned the revived Lotus Elan; and Tom Kearns, an American who spent years overseas working at Opel. With their collective brainpower, Cadillac spent the 1990s reinventing itself into something bolder, sharper, and less, well, reminiscent of a retirement home parking lot. Famous concepts like the XLR-coded Evoq, the V12-powered Cien supercar, and the utterly wonderful Sixteen all came from a new design philosophy famously named “Art and Science.”
It was through this philosophy that the entry-level CTS, the mid-size STS, and the full-size DTS sedans found their way to the mainstream. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, as the utterly disastrous Catera could attest to, but along with the transformative Escalade SUV, Cadillac was in a pretty fantastic position to reinvent itself in the 2000s. When the time came to give the ubiquitous STS the V-Series performance treatment, they even had the perfect engine lineage to shove under its hood.
In truth, the Northstar line wasn’t a child of the 2000s. Developed at first by Oldsmobile in the late 1980s, the Northstar line was GM’s first honest attempt to field an engine remotely on the same level as what BMW, Mercedes, and Audi were putting out in those years. Its first application was the 1993 Cadillac Allanté, a front-wheel-drive luxury drop-top initially shackled to the ironically-named “High Technology” V8, intended more to help Caddy conform to CAFE standards than be a competent luxury car motor.
With dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, these early 4.6-liter Northstar engines were legitimately on the same level as the S38s, M119s, and V8 Quattros found in equivalent Mercs, Bimmers, and Audis. Still, for all the innovation and the impressive horsepower figures bordering on the low 300s, it all fell to pieces the minute the weak head gaskets gave way. Even then, they were bound to leak oil or stretch the head bolts well before the warranty expired.
It took the better part of a decade and a half for Cadillac to work out all the bugs in the Northstar’s construction. For starters, they had to re-engineer the original architecture from the ground up, reinforce the cylinder walls and drop down the bore size by two millimeters, and lower the cubic displacement down to 4.4 liters. Add 9.0:1 compression, stronger head bolts, and a sand-cast aluminum block, and the new and improved Northstar engine was finally strong enough to accept novel things like forced induction. When the time came to give the Cadillac STS the V treatment, that turned out to be a real blessing.
With most of the problems that doomed earlier Northstars more or less taken care of, and with an Eaton M122 supercharger in tow, the Cadillac STS-V was one of the most potent sedans the brand ever built. With variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust sides of the engine, a forged steel crankshaft, and powdered metal connecting rods, the LC3 was far removed from what its ancestors were. To help that two-liter supercharger stay cool, a pair of water-to-air intercoolers were mounted directly into the intake manifold plenum.
Sure, it was less of a hot vee and more like a “warm vee,” but that little addition ensured the engine didn’t succumb to thermal soaking the way similar engines sometimes do. At 6,400 rpm, the LC3 Northstar engine put 469 horsepower at the crank, and 439 lb-ft of torque at 3,900 RPM. Without the benefit of all-wheel drive like many of its German rivals, the STS-V was at a slight disadvantage from a standing start compared to, say, an Audi S6 Quattro or an E60 M5. Still, at 4.6 seconds to 60 mph and a quarter-mile sprint in the mid to high 13s, the STS-V was legitimately quick. Compared to Cadillacs built just a decade earlier, it was practically a rocket ship.
Each LC3 Northstar V8 was assembled entirely by hand at GM’s Wixom Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan. It’s the same place where the legendary 6.2-liter LS3 and 7.0-liter LS7 V8s of Corvette fame were built, as well as the supercharged LS9 engine in the C6 ZR1. Such was the seriousness with which GM took this motor, dedicating a team of master technicians and engineers to build nothing but LC3 Northstar V8s for the duration of the STS-V’s production. Mind you, it wasn’t like production lasted that long.
While the LS-based Cadillac CTS-V came into its own in the mid-to-late 2000s, its larger STS-V cousin was barely a footnote in the story of a larger brand rebirth that legitimately saved Cadillac from irrelevance. Between 2006 and 2009, GM manufactured somewhere in the range of 2,500 units, or roughly 650 STS-Vs per year. Over the same period, BMW sold over 20,000 E60 M5s across the globe, and Mercedes-AMG sold over 11,000 W211-series E63s. By comparison, the STS-V barely existed at all.
By the time the LSA-based Gen-II CTS-V entered the world in 2009, the STS-V was already on its way out the door. By 2011, the entire STS lineup was discontinued, though it managed to squeeze a couple more model years out of the emerging consumer market in China. After that, it would take more than half a decade for Cadillac to return to a similar market segment via the 2019 CT6-V. Complete with a genuine hot-vee Blackwing V8, that engine was as close in philosophy to the Northstar engines of old as Cadillac has come in recent years. Still, the STS-V stands alone as one of the most underrated performance sedans of the 2000s, one you could easily pick up today for around $10,000 all day long.
