Need a load of space for ferrying the family without paying new-car prices? The used market is packed with family cars that are only a few years old, with some looking particularly good value compared with buying new.

We’ve analysed all the used family cars available at each price point using the thousands of cars for sale presented by The Car Expert’s brand new AI tool, which consults our industry-leading Expert Rating Index of more than 900 different cars to see which models have the highest Used Car Expert Ratings.

Our Expert Ratings are powered by comprehensive review data, safety and eco ratings, and reliability and running cost estimations, so you can be confident that this is the definitive guide to the best used family cars for every budget that are on sale in the UK right now.

Every car listed below has used models available to purchase now, each model being reasonably new; no older than three years old.

Best used family car under £10,000

The compact but surprisingly practical Ford Puma SUV has been the best selling new car in the UK for over two years now, and for good reason. The car’s combination of comfort, efficient engine choices, clever boot storage and agile steering makes it one of the most enjoyable cars to drive in the small SUV class, as well as being well-suited to the daily school run. Rear passenger space is rather tight which might be a deal-breaker for some, but considering what is available at this price point, the Puma offers fantastic value-for-money.

The Ford Puma range holds a Used Car Expert Rating of A in our Expert Rating Index, with a score of 71%.

Also available on this budget:

Nissan Juke

Like the Puma, the small Nissan Juke SUV has been a top ten best-sellers list contender for several years, offering solid safety credentials, affordable running costs and decent boot space. On the other hand, it’s not as engaging to drive as the Puma.

Nissan Leaf

Nissan Leaf (2018 onwards) Expert Rating

Roomy, affordable and reliable – the second-generation Nissan Leaf was the best selling electric car worldwide not that long ago. That said, it has also been surpassed by newer rivals that offer a longer battery range.

Best used family car under £15,000

Stretching your budget up to £15k introduces many used models in the size class above, and the pick of the bunch according to our Expert Rating index is the Hyundai Tucson. Offering a high level of standard equipment, plenty of boot space, affordable insurance premiums and upmarket interior quality, the SUV is a great choice for the daily commute without breaking the bank.

The Hyundai Tucson holds a Used Car Expert Rating of A in our Expert Rating Index, with a score of 74%.

Cupra Born

Cupra Born | Expert Rating

The Cupra Born is an all-electric family-sized hatchback with a competitive battery range, a spacious and practical interior, low running costs and a generous standard equipment list. For those seeking driving thrills after the daily school run however, it isn’t as fun to drive as its sporty looks suggest.

Skoda Octavia

Skoda Octavia (2020 onwards) – Expert Rating wallpaper

The dependable Skoda Octavia is well-suited to the rigours of the everyday driving, offering a leisurely driving experience and low running costs. Whether you opt for the saloon or the larger estate version, the Skoda also has more rear legroom than most alternatives in the medium car class.

Best used family car under £20,000

The Mk8 Volkswagen Golf is six years old now, but it is just as competitive in the family hatchback class as the day it first arrived. Available as either a hatchback or estate, the Golf pairs great ride comfort with excellent safety standards and affordable running costs. There are more spacious options at this price point, particularly if you regularly carry adults in the back, but few are as accomplished across the board. With plenty of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid models on the used market, a £20k budget gives you a wide choice of relatively young examples.

The Volkswagen Golf range holds a Used Car Expert Rating of A in our Expert Rating Index, with a score of 72%.

Also available on this budget:

MG 4

The electric MG 4 hatchback is a serious value-for-money proposition as a new car, and on the used car market it’s no different. Offering excellent safety credentials, low running costs, a competitive battery range and a comfortable ride, the family car is also rather fun to drive around town.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2021 onwards) – Expert Rating

This retro-modern Hyundai is larger than it looks and is well-mannered on the road. Reviewers are also impressed by the car’s powertrain and infotainment system, but alternatives have a softer ride. There are several near-new Ioniq 5 models on the used market with heavily discounted price tags.

Best used family car under £30,000

The BMW i4 was an expensive proposition when it first arrived, but depreciation has made this upmarket electric liftback a much more tempting used buy. Comfortable, refined and enjoyable to drive, the i4 also offers a high-quality interior, strong battery range and a practical hatchback-style boot that makes it well suited to everyday family duties. Rear-seat space is tighter than some similarly priced alternatives, particularly for taller passengers, but there are few electric family cars that combine comfort, performance and quality quite so convincingly. With a £30k budget, three-year-old examples are now within reach.

The BMW i4 holds a Used Car Expert Rating of A in our Expert Rating Index, with a score of 73%.

Also available on this budget:

Skoda Kodiaq

Few family SUVs tick as many practical boxes as the Skoda Kodiaq. The latest model offers a huge amount of passenger and boot space, while seven-seat versions add useful flexibility for larger families. It’s comfortable, well equipped and easy to live with. The third row is better suited to children than adults, but if outright practicality is the priority, the Kodiaq is difficult to fault.

BYD Seal U

Searching for a used BYD Seal U though The Car Expert’s AI tool presents a truely vast field of strong value-for-money listings. The SUV’s generous passenger space and strong safety credentials add to the appeal. The driving experience is less convincing, with an unsettled ride and vague steering, but as a practical and affordable family SUV, the Seal U has plenty going for it.

Best used family car under £40,000

The Mini Countryman Electric combines a spacious, well-built interior with strong safety credentials, competitive battery range and more personality than many electric family SUVs. It’s comfortable and enjoyable to drive too, while a £40k budget gives you access to very young, well-equipped examples. There are larger and more practical SUVs available for the same money, particularly if boot space is a priority, but the Countryman makes a convincing family car for buyers who don’t need cavernous interior space.

The Mini Countryman Electric range holds a Used Car Expert Rating of A with a score of 77%.

Also available on this budget:

Volkswagen ID. Buzz

An electric people carrier with unique styling, competitive battery range and more space and practicality than similarly priced SUVs, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is an ideal fit for a family of five. It has strong resale values on the used market, which means that models are still pretty pricey even at three years old.

Skoda Superb

The Skoda Superb remains one of the roomiest family cars on the market, with plenty of passenger space and an enormous boot, particularly in estate form. It’s comfortable and refined on longer journeys too. It lacks the SUV styling many family buyers now prefer, but few alternatives can match it for sheer practicality.

Best used family car under £50,000

The winner of The Car Expert’s Best Premium Large Car of 2026 , the Audi A6 e-tron is a compelling choice for families covering plenty of motorway miles, combining excellent battery range with a quiet, comfortable cabin and rapid charging capability. There’s plenty of space for passengers and luggage too, particularly in Avant estate form, while a £50k budget can secure a very young used example. Plenty of larger SUVs are available for similar money, but few electric family cars are as accomplished over long distances.

The Audi A6 e-tron range holds a Used Car Expert Rating of A in our Expert Rating Index, with a score of 72%.

Also available on this budget:

Kia EV9

More interested in a high-riding SUV? The Kia EV9 is one of the most spacious electric family cars around, offering three genuinely useful rows of seats, a comfortable ride and plenty of standard equipment. It’s enormous and used examples are still quite expensive, but few EVs are as well suited to carrying a large family from A to B.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe majors on interior space, quality and versatility, with seven seats, a roomy cabin and plenty of family-friendly touches. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains keep it competitive on running costs, while its boxy shape makes provides excellent headroom.

For the definitive rankings of the best used family cars for every budget, we’ve used The Car Expert’s industry-leading Expert Rating index. The Index is recalculated every week with all the very latest data to make sure you’re getting the most accurate and reliable ratings for every new or near-new car.
