To say that Toyota’s presence in the United States is huge is an understatement. Not only do they have the best-selling non-pickup in the country, which is the RAV4, but they also have a very diverse model range that has its pros and cons. For one, with so many models on offer, there’s a Toyota for everyone.

Unfortunately, if your model lineup is too diverse, you’ll probably end up cannibalizing one model over the other. There’s only so much an automaker can do to thinly slice the market and cater to everyone by offering multiple models that inevitably overlap. The RAV4, unfortunately, is inflicting this effect on some of its other brilliant SUVs, and that’s despite the currently long wait list it has, which makes McLaren’s models seem easier to purchase. With that in mind, let us steer you toward another brilliant Toyota SUV that isn’t a RAV4, and it also comes with the upside of not having a long wait list.

Why The RAV4 Has A Long Waiting List

The 2026 Toyota RAV4’s wait list can easily match the one from a supercar brand like Ferrari. Waiting times can stretch as far as six months, and inventories are measured in hours rather than days.

The RAV4 Just Got Its Biggest Redesign Yet — And America Can’t Get Enough

The RAV4 is right-sized for America. It isn’t too big, nor is it too small. It certainly helps that it’s gone all hybrid this year, because, as fuel prices skyrocket, its efficient hybrid powertrain that averages 43 MPG in its most efficient trim has become its asset. Last year, 479,288 units of the RAV4 were sold, making it America’s best-selling non-truck and the third best-selling vehicle overall. It got a full redesign this year. Its rugged design inside and out, plus the new tech features that make it an even better value proposition, made the RAV4 even more appealing.

How A Factory Redesign And A Natural Disaster Created The RAV4 Shortage

Unfortunately, production for the RAV4 hasn’t kept up with demand. The RAV4 is usually made in the United States, but the full redesign necessitated changes in Toyota’s Kentucky plant. As a result, initial batches of the RAV4 came from Japan, while the Kentucky plant was still being tweaked. Making matters more challenging is the Middle East situation and the recent Kumamoto earthquake, which has affected the production of Toyota’s suppliers and consequently delayed some components needed for the RAV4.

Today, the Kentucky plant is already producing the new RAV4, but as production has yet to ramp up, the RAV4 still faces long wait times while demand continues to rise. Despite these constraints, customers are still willing to wait for the RAV4, reflecting the strong loyalty American customers have for the brand. If the RAV4 wait time is too much to endure, here’s another Toyota SUV worth considering, albeit at a higher price than the RAV4.

Cross Shop The Corolla Cross Hybrid

With a base price of $29,795, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is a smaller, more affordable alternative to the RAV4. Though it’s not the most modern or the biggest, you may want to consider the more affordable Corolla Cross Hybrid if you can no longer wait for the RAV4.

More Affordable In A Slightly Smaller Package

Though Toyota is famous for keeping its inventory in check, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is more readily available than the RAV4. You’ll likely get the spec and color you want in a Corolla Cross Hybrid, while also paying at MSRP or with a slight discount due to greater inventory availability. While the Corolla Cross Hybrid starts at $29,795, we recommend the mid-spec SE so that it offers a great balance between the necessary features you need and the premium features you want.

Additionally, since the Corolla Cross Hybrid has a lower price range, you’ll likely have more budget flexibility to opt for a higher trim if you do choose the RAV4. Your main concern is likely its size, and while the Corolla Cross Hybrid is smaller, its dimensions may already be sufficient for your needs. Besides, both are still five-seaters, and though smaller, consider the possibility that you may not need the most headroom, legroom, or cargo capacity for every journey you’ll be making with the Corolla Cross Hybrid.

But how do these numbers translate into the real world? At 5 feet 10 inches tall, this reviewer found that, while crossing one’s legs in the rear of the Corolla Cross Hybrid is not possible, there is still enough legroom for a long journey without complaint. Where one might notice the difference is shoulder room when carrying three adults, as the narrower cabin of the Corolla Cross Hybrid becomes apparent.

How The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s Standard AWD Compensates For Its Power Deficit

Furthermore, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid uses the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS V) with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and electronic all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard. It produces 196 horsepower and is sent through a planetary gear-type eCVT. Though this is down on power versus the RAV4’s 226-horsepower 2.5-liter hybrid system, its standard AWD may be enough of a selling point for some customers.

Car and Driver says that the Corolla Cross Hybrid does the 0-60 mph run in 7.6 seconds, which is perfectly adequate rather than breathtakingly quick. With a combined efficiency rating of 42 MPG, it’s also fairly evenly matched with the RAV4. In terms of the driving experience, the Corolla Cross Hybrid focuses on being unobtrusive and easy-going.

The steering is reasonably precise but not necessarily responsive, while the suspension is biased more for comfort and stability. Refinement-wise, the Corolla Cross Hybrid has more road and engine noise than the bigger RAV4, and with the RAV4 having more powerful electric motors, it has a higher percentage of pure electric driving than the Corolla Cross Hybrid.

Not The Flashiest SUV On The Market, But The Corolla Cross Hybrid Delivers Where It Counts

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid offers a pleasing drive that simply fades into the background, and here’s what you need to know in terms of its features, design, and quality feel.

Toyota Made The Hybrid The Sporty One — Here’s What That Means For The Design

Toyota has positioned the hybrid version of the Corolla Cross as its sportier model, as reflected in the S, SE, and XSE trim structure. This sportier orientation is reflected in its design, wherein the S and SE come with two-tone 17-inch wheels, while the range-topping XSE comes with black 18-inch wheels.

LED headlights are standard on all variants, but the integrated LED daytime running lights with LED turn signals are specific to the range-topping XSE. Overall, though the foundational design of the Corolla Cross leans toward functionality rather than stylishness or beauty, the sportier character of the hybrid models adds visual appeal to this humble subcompact crossover SUV.

The Interior Won’t Beat Mazda, But Wireless CarPlay And A 10.5-Inch Screen Make It Feel Current

Meanwhile, the interior of the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross leans on the functional side as well. There are just enough soft-touch materials to avoid feeling drab, but its interior — whether in terms of design or perceived quality — won’t challenge the Korean brands or even Mazda in terms of premium feel. Fabric seats are fitted to both the S and SE trims. Giving the interior a dose of modernity is the standard seven-inch digital gauge cluster and eight-inch touchscreen infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The eight-inch touchscreen is upgradeable to a 10.5-inch unit in the SE, but this is now standard on the range-topping XSE. Other features that the range-topping XSE gets as standard include heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, just to name a few. If you want to make the XSE feel even more premium, the other available optional features for the XSE include a JBL sound system, a powered tailgate, and a sunroof. As a whole, the Corolla Cross, inside and out, is pretty much an inoffensive vehicle, but for the majority of the buying public who simply want a stress-free crossover SUV with reasonable style and presence, it’s hard to go wrong with the Corolla Cross Hybrid.
