Lexus Kept The IS Alive With A V6, A Torsen Diff, And BBS Wheels While BMW And Mercedes Went Four-Cylinder

The 2027 Lexus IS 350 arrives at a peculiar moment in the compact luxury sedan segment. BMW’s 3 Series base models run turbocharged four-cylinders. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is going fully electric for 2027, with a dual-motor C400 4Matic producing 483 horsepower from a 94-kWh battery pack. Lexus, meanwhile, has done something almost countercultural: kept a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 as the only engine on the menu, paired it with a Torsen limited-slip differential on rear-wheel-drive models, and wrapped the whole thing in a new Special Appearance Package finished in Envious Green with 19-inch black BBS forged wheels.

The IS 350 is offered exclusively in F SPORT Design and F SPORT grades, starting at $47,545. That’s the entire powertrain lineup — no turbo-four entry point, no hybrid option, no electrified alternative. For buyers who’ve watched the segment drift toward low-end torque and instant electric thrust, the IS represents a deliberate counterargument: a sport sedan built around linear power delivery and mechanical grip rather than peak output numbers.

What The Torsen Diff Actually Does In A Sport Sedan

A Torsen limited-slip differential — Torsen being a portmanteau of “torque sensing” — works by detecting speed differences between the rear wheels and mechanically redistributing torque toward the wheel with more grip, without any electronic intervention. It’s a passive system, which means it reacts instantly and predictably. In a sport sedan context, that translates to tighter cornering lines and more confidence when you’re pushing through a sweeping on-ramp or threading a canyon road.

The distinction matters when you compare it to an open differential, which simply splits torque equally between both rear wheels regardless of grip. When one wheel loses traction, an open diff sends power to the path of least resistance — the spinning wheel — and the car goes nowhere useful. A Torsen doesn’t wait for wheelspin to occur; it continuously manages the torque split based on mechanical resistance. On the IS 350, the Torsen is part of the Handling Package, which also includes the sport-tuned Adaptive Variable Suspension that continuously adjusts damping force between everyday comfort and Sport S+ sharpness.

The Case For Naturally Aspirated In A Turbocharged World

The 3.5-liter V6 in the IS 350 produces 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, sent through an eight-speed automatic on rear-wheel-drive models. Those numbers don’t win a spec-sheet war against a 483-hp electric C-Class, but they tell a different story from behind the wheel. A naturally aspirated engine builds power in direct proportion to engine speed — press the accelerator and the response is immediate, with no lag while a turbocharger spools up or a boost threshold is crossed. Power continues building as the revs climb, which rewards drivers who are willing to work the transmission rather than simply relying on low-end torque.

That character is increasingly rare. Turbocharged four-cylinders deliver strong torque figures at low rpm, which makes them feel effortlessly quick in everyday driving. Electric powertrains go further, with instant torque from a standstill. Neither approach is wrong, but both prioritize a particular kind of performance — one that can feel disconnected from the mechanical act of driving. Lexus is explicitly framing the IS around what it calls the Lexus Driving Signature: a brand-wide emphasis on responsive, linear control, exceptional grip, and refined ride quality. The naturally aspirated V6 is central to that philosophy.

The Special Appearance Package and Its 350-Unit Limit

The headline addition for 2027 is the Special Appearance Package, limited to 350 units for North America. Built on the IS 350 F SPORT, it brings the Envious Green exterior — a deep, saturated shade exclusive to this package — alongside 19-inch black BBS forged alloy wheels with red brake calipers. BBS forged wheels are a meaningful spec call; the manufacturing process produces a lighter, stronger wheel than cast alternatives, which reduces unsprung weight and sharpens steering response.

Inside, the package adds black NuLuxe perforated seats with Ultrasuede inserts and green stitching, satin chrome trim on the steering wheel, center console, dashboard, and door cards, a power rear sunshade, and a Mark Levinson audio system. The cabin also features Forged Bamboo ornamentation on the center console and start switch bezel. F SPORT Design models across the 2027 lineup gain a new 19-inch black and machine-finished wheel as standard, along with a heated steering wheel now included as standard equipment. The Special Appearance Package was announced at the conclusion of Lexus’s four-city IS 25th Legacy Tour in Miami, continuing a series of annual special editions that began in 2022.

Where The IS 350 Sits Against Its German Rivals

At $47,545 to start, the IS 350 F SPORT Design undercuts the 2027 Mercedes-Benz C400 4Matic EV significantly — the electric C-Class hasn’t published final U.S. pricing, but its 800-volt architecture, 94-kWh battery, and dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup will position it well above the IS’s entry point. The BMW 3 Series, which uses turbocharged four-cylinder engines across its base lineup, competes more directly on price but offers a fundamentally different driving character.

The IS’s argument isn’t that 311 horsepower beats 483, or that a Torsen diff outperforms electronically controlled torque vectoring. It’s that the combination of a naturally aspirated engine, a mechanical limited-slip differential, and an adaptive suspension creates a cohesive, driver-focused experience that’s becoming genuinely uncommon in this segment. Whether that’s worth $47,545 depends on what you’re looking for — but for buyers who find turbocharged sedans a little too seamless and electric ones a little too disconnected, the IS 350 is one of the last places to find this particular combination of hardware in a luxury package.

The 2027 IS 350 is expected at Lexus dealerships later this year. The Special Appearance Package’s 350-unit production cap means the Envious Green cars will move quickly — if the combination of BBS wheels, a Torsen diff, and a naturally aspirated V6 sounds like the right answer to a segment that’s gone a different direction, it’s worth getting on a list sooner rather than later.
