During the 1960s and 1970s, motorcycle manufacturers searched for alternatives to the conventional piston engine, and few looked more promising than the Wankel rotary. Its compact dimensions, smooth power delivery, and unusual operating principle offered the potential for strong performance from a remarkably small package.
As interest in the technology grew, manufacturers began racing to bring a rotary-powered motorcycle to series production. While better known Japanese manufacturers would eventually enter the fray, an obscure German company quietly reached the finish line first. Its historic achievement, however, would prove far more significant than its commercial success.
The Wankel seemed almost tailor-made for motorcycles. With only a rotor and eccentric shaft moving internally, it could deliver strong power from a compact package while producing fewer vibrations than a conventional piston engine.
Its ability to generate multiple power impulses also promised remarkably smooth operation, giving engineers another reason to explore the unconventional design.
By the early 1970s, that potential had attracted several motorcycle manufacturers. Suzuki secured a Wankel license in 1970 and began developing its own engine, while Yamaha was also working on a water-cooled rotary design. Hercules, Norton and Van Veen were pursuing their own solutions.
Hercules had an important advantage in its rotary program: access to Sachs engineering. The German manufacturer used a 294-cc single-rotor unit developed by Sachs for applications including snowmobiles and industrial machinery, adapting the compact powerplant for motorcycle use.
Rather than designing an entirely new engine, Hercules could build around an existing rotary unit and bring the unusual concept to market relatively quickly. The result was the Hercules Wankel 2000, or W2000, which reached European dealers in 1974. That timing gave it a remarkable place in motorcycle history. Suzuki was already developing its own rotary machine, but its RE5 did not reach the market until 1975. The W2000 therefore became the world’s first series-production, rotary-powered motorcycle sold to the public, beating one of Japan’s largest manufacturers to a milestone that had attracted considerable industry attention.
The Hercules W2000 kept its rotary powerplant remarkably straightforward. The air-cooled 294-cc Sachs single-rotor was mounted longitudinally in a conventional tubular steel frame, while a six-speed gearbox sent power to the rear wheel. This layout avoided the elaborate engineering seen on some later rotary motorcycles, but it also reflected the W2000’s modest ambitions.
Producing between 27 and 32 bhp at 6,500 rpm, depending on the version, the motorcycle was hardly a performance machine. Its approximately 381-lb dry weight further limited its sporting potential, although the relatively relaxed engine characteristics suited longer journeys. With its conventional chassis and practical riding position, the W2000 was better understood as a comfortable road-going tourer than a motorcycle designed to challenge contemporary superbikes.
When Suzuki’s answer arrived, its engineering philosophy could hardly have been more different. The Suzuki RE5 used a 497-cc single rotor, but instead of relying on straightforward air-cooling, Suzuki employed both liquid-cooling and oil-cooling to control the intense heat generated by the rotary combustion process.
The engine was surrounded by substantial supporting hardware, including a large radiator and dedicated lubrication arrangements. Its induction system was equally ambitious. A two-stage carburetor was designed to provide different fueling characteristics across the rev range and incorporated an extraordinary five cables to operate its various functions. The result was an unusually complicated motorcycle, illustrating how extensively Suzuki’s engineers had to work around the rotary engine’s thermal, lubrication and fueling demands rather than simply extracting power from it.
The Wankel engine’s compactness came with a significant drawback at the fuel pump. The W2000 was notably thirsty, with reported economy varying from the low 40s to 41 mpg depending on riding conditions and the model tested. That made its running costs difficult to justify against more economical conventional motorcycles.
There were practical compromises elsewhere, too. Limited ground clearance restricted how confidently the W2000 could be pushed through corners, reinforcing its touring rather than sporting character. Early examples also required owners to mix two-stroke oil with the fuel, adding an extra chore that most four-stroke motorcycle riders did not face. Hercules addressed that inconvenience in 1976 with the W2000 Injection, which gained a separate oil reservoir and metering pump to automatically supply lubricant to the rotary engine.
The W2000 faced an unusual problem that had nothing to do with its actual performance. Insurance companies struggled to apply conventional displacement rules to the rotary engine, counting the swept volume of all three chambers and effectively rating its 294-cc powerplant as an 882-cc motorcycle. That placed the W2000 in a much larger displacement category than its modest output suggested. For prospective buyers, the consequences could be severe, with insurance costs reportedly approaching those associated with much larger, more powerful motorcycles.
The problem was particularly damaging because conventional motorcycles in the same price range could offer considerably stronger performance without attracting the same insurance penalty. A motorcycle producing little more than 27 bhp was therefore being financially treated like a high-displacement machine, undermining one of the strongest reasons a buyer might have considered its compact rotary engine in the first place.
The commercial experiment was short-lived. Hercules built only around 1,784 W2000s between 1974 and 1977, with limited demand preventing its pioneering motorcycle from becoming a mainstream success. Production ended before the rotary could establish a significant foothold in the motorcycle market, leaving the W2000 as a rare curiosity rather than the beginning of a new engine era.
Its significance becomes clearer when viewed alongside the motorcycles that followed. Suzuki’s RE5 arrived with a far more elaborate interpretation of rotary technology, while Norton later developed the engine for competition and high-performance applications. Yet neither approach transformed the rotary into a mainstream motorcycle powerplant. The W2000 therefore remains important not because it made the rotary successful, but because it proved first that a rotary-powered motorcycle could reach production, while those that followed demonstrated how difficult it was to make the concept commercially competitive on two wheels.
