Dolly Parton’s Favorite Luxury Car Was A V8 Cadillac
Dolly Parton was never known for subtlety. The country music legend built an unmistakable image around rhinestones, enormous hair and glamorous outfits, so you’d be forgiven for assuming her favorite car was equally outrageous. Instead, one of Parton’s favorites was a relatively ordinary 1997 Cadillac DeVille d’Elegance that she reportedly drove for more than a decade.
Parton passed away peacefully in Nashville on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, leaving behind a career and legacy that stretched far beyond country music. Cars were also part of her story, particularly Cadillacs. Parton once explained that buying one was part of making it in country music, saying, “you can’t be country if you don’t have a Cadillac.” The surprising part is that she became so attached to a comfortable front-wheel-drive luxury sedan from the 1990s.
Dolly Parton’s Favorite Cadillac Was Surprisingly Normal
The 1997 DeVille d’Elegance wasn’t some coachbuilt celebrity special or exotic performance car. The d’Elegance package sat on the luxurious side of Cadillac’s DeVille lineup, delivering exactly the sort of plush American luxury buyers expected from the brand during the late 1990s. Under its enormous hood was Cadillac’s 4.6-liter Northstar V8, producing 275 horsepower. Power went through a four-speed automatic transmission, making the DeVille considerably more interested in effortlessly eating highway miles than attacking corners.

The d’Elegance also packed plenty of technology for a luxury sedan from 1997. Instead of conventional gauges, the DeVille and DeVille d’Elegance received a digital instrument cluster with a large digital speedometer, electronic fuel gauge, odometer and trip information. Cadillac also gave it a Driver Information Center capable of displaying information including average and instant fuel economy, driving range and vehicle status messages.
The rest of the cabin was equally focused on comfort. The d’Elegance offered heated and power-adjustable leather seats, automatic climate control, cruise control and plenty of woodgrain trim, while Cadillac also offered driver personalization features for items such as the memory seats and mirrors, climate control and door locks. The d’Elegance itself was new for 1997 and added touches including chrome wheels, gold exterior trim and Cadillac’s Rainsense automatic windshield wipers.
That might seem relatively ordinary for someone with Parton’s wealth, but the Cadillac apparently earned its place the old-fashioned way: she actually used it. Parton reportedly kept and drove the 1997 Cadillac for more than a decade. That longevity makes the DeVille considerably more interesting than another expensive celebrity car purchased for a collection and rarely driven.
Cadillacs Had A Much Deeper Meaning To Dolly Parton
Parton’s relationship with Cadillac stretched well beyond this particular DeVille. She grew up as one of 12 children in rural Tennessee before becoming one of country music’s biggest stars. Once the money started coming in, a Cadillac represented something much larger than transportation. Parton told CBS that the first time she really splurged on herself, she bought a gold Cadillac. She also shared that success with her family. Parton was known for buying Cadillacs for her mother, making the brand part of both her success story and the way she rewarded the people closest to her.
That context makes the otherwise ordinary DeVille d’Elegance make considerably more sense. Parton didn’t need the fastest or most expensive car available to prove she’d made it. For her, Cadillac already represented that accomplishment.
Cadillac DeVille d’Elegance 2026 Market Values
Despite the Northstar V8 and all that late-’90s Cadillac luxury, an ordinary DeVille d’Elegance remains surprisingly affordable. A clean 1997 Cadillac DeVille d’Elegance with just 27,000 miles sold for $7,200 on Bring a Trailer in June 2023. That car featured the same 275-horsepower 4.6-liter Northstar V8 and four-speed automatic, along with its digital instrumentation, heated power seats, automatic climate control and chrome 16-inch wheels.
However, recent low-mileage examples are now showing auction prices almost doubling in 2026 at around $14,000, giving us a useful real-world benchmark for what an unusually low-mileage example could bring without Dolly Parton’s name attached to it. Another higher 88k mile example is also for sale on Classic.com, with an auction price of $5,999, showing that low mile examples continue to slowly rise in value.
You Can Still See Dolly Parton’s 1997 Cadillac Today
Parton eventually parted ways with the car in 2008. Representatives from the Hollywood Star Cars Museum met her in Nashville that October to acquire the Cadillac for its collection. She didn’t simply hand over the keys, either. Parton autographed the armrests before the car became a museum exhibit. The 1997 Cadillac remains part of the collection at the Hollywood Star Cars Museum, just miles from the part of Tennessee where Parton grew up. After giving up the DeVille, Parton reportedly moved into a Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, but the old d’Elegance remains a much more interesting piece of her automotive history.
For someone whose public image was deliberately larger than life, there is something fitting about one of her favorite cars being a comfortable old Cadillac she simply refused to stop driving. Apparently, Jolene wasn’t the only one who couldn’t take Dolly’s Cadillac away.
