Buying a 650-horsepower sports car for $25,300 usually means accepting some fairly serious compromises. The interior might smell like crap, the dashboard could be held together with glue, and the seller will probably insist that the strange engine noise is completely normal.

However, this 2000 Chevrolet Corvette is the exception. It combines a 650-hp Lingenfelter twin-turbo V8 with a six-speed manual transmission, removable roof panels, air conditioning, and it has fewer than 30,000 miles. It recently crossed the block at Mecum’s Nashville auction, where someone bought this beauty for less than the price of a new Toyota GR86. That buyer may have just scored one of the most outrageous performance bargains of the year.

This C5 Corvette Packs A 650-HP Lingenfelter Surprise

The ordinary 2000 Corvette came with a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter LS1 producing 345 hp. That was serious power at the time, but apparently not serious enough for whoever ordered this car’s Lingenfelter Stage II package.

Lingenfelter added twin turbochargers and rebuilt the engine with forged aluminum pistons, a forged steel crankshaft, billet steel connecting rods, upgraded valve springs, titanium retainers, and extensively reworked cylinder heads. The result is a claimed 650 horsepower, almost double the output of a standard C5.

Even better for guys who want a stick, all that power reaches the rear tires through a six-speed manual transmission. There’s no dual-clutch gearbox, launch-control button, or computer waiting to negotiate dynamics with a driver.

It Sold For Less Than A New Toyota GR86

Mecum sold the Corvette for $25,300 during its Nashville auction on September 23. That’s startlingly cheap for any clean C5 Corvette with documented Lingenfelter hardware, never mind one producing 650 hp.

The odometer shows 29,260 miles, and the sale included Lingenfelter documentation and the original window sticker. Its white body is paired with a bright red leather interior, while polished aluminum wheels complete the wonderfully late-1990s look.

Despite its monstrous engine, this remains a surprisingly usable sports car. It’s also got dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable seats, cruise control, a memory package, and two removable roof panels. You could enjoy a comfortable highway drive, remove the roof for some fresh air, and then unleash enough turbocharged mayhem to get that adrenaline pumping.

The Biggest Performance Car Bargain Anyone Could Hope For

Modern performance cars might have made 650 hp seem normal, but they certainly have not made it cheap. A new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 starts deep into six-figure territory once options and dealer enthusiasm enter the conversation.

This C5 offers the same basic recipe enthusiasts keep begging manufacturers to build: a large V8, rear-wheel drive, a proper manual gearbox, low weight, and very little unnecessary technology. Lingenfelter simply added two turbochargers because restraint is boring. Naturally, a 26-year-old modified Corvette comes with more risk than a new car carrying a factory warranty. Twin-turbo builds generate heat, consume tires, and can turn neglected maintenance into expensive mechanical confetti. The new owner will want to inspect every hose, seal, fluid, and boost-related component before exploring all 650 horses.

Even with that warning, $25,300 feels borderline insane. Someone just bought a documented, twin-turbo, manual Corvette with supercar power for ordinary crossover money.
