Kawasaki has revived the KLE moniker for 2026 with the Kawasaki KLE 500, a lightweight, do-it-all adventure bike. Introduced in late 2025, Kawi’s latest ADV machine is currently available in North American dealerships, marking the first time the KLE nameplate has made its way to the US shores. The two-bike KLE 500 range starts at $6,599 for the standard model and $7,499 for the up-spec KLE 500 SE. Here’s what the new KLE 500 range has to offer in the small-displacement adventure bike segment.

The KLE 500 Might Be The Versatile Sweet Spot ADV For Many

The original Kawasaki KLE500 was launched in 1991 during its initial run, which lasted until 1997. After a hiatus, it returned for two additional years in 2005, though we should note that it never graced our Stateside market.

Kawasaki has revived the nameplate for 2026, and this time the KLE 500 aims not only to fix its predecessor’s faults but also to sit as the versatile sweet spot in the sub-500cc adventure bike segment. Kawasaki says the 2026 KLE 500 is built for adventure and versatility, with smooth, confident performance both on and off the road. Let’s look at what makes this ADV so versatile.

A Proven Parallel-Twin Engine Offers The Most Performance And Versatility

The KLE 500 is powered by Kawasaki’s proven 451cc parallel-twin engine, which has already demonstrated its versatility across a range of models, including the Ninja 500, Z 500, Eliminator, and the hybrid Ninja 7 and Z 7. On the KLE 500, the engine produces 51 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 31.7 lb-ft.of torque at 7,500 rpm, delivering strong performance in the sub-500cc ADV segment. While many of its rivals remain restricted to A2-compliant outputs even in the United States, the KLE is restricted only in markets where A2 licensing regulations require it.

Kawasaki says this engine is responsive, delivering usable power across the rev range in a range of riding conditions. Kawasaki says it offers strong low-end torque and quick high-end acceleration, along with a predictable character that beginner motorcyclists will appreciate. The flexible engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox, and its final drive ratio is said to strike a balance between highway efficiency and smooth off-road torque delivery. An assist and slipper clutch should offer light lever pull and prevent wheel hopping under aggressive downshifts.

High-Tensile Steel Trellis Frame Designed For Real-World Riding

Kawasaki

Instead of using aggressive motocross geometry, Kawasaki designed the KLE 500’s steel trellis frame with adaptability and all-day usability in mind. The standard KLE 500 ABS tips the scales at 383.7 pounds (wet), using the parallel-twin engine as a stressed member in the lightweight chassis. The engine is also canted forward to lower the center of gravity. Kawasaki claims the frame design offers confidence and stability in all riding conditions.

Additional frame details reinforce the KLE 500’s dual-purpose nature. The aluminum lower triple clamp reduces weight, while the standard aluminum skid plate and reinforced square-tube swingarm are designed to handle off-road abuse. The design also allows 7.3 inches of ground clearance, which isn’t as elevated as its rivals but should suffice for light off-roading.

Suspension, Wheels, And Brakes

Staying true to the versatility and confidence-inspiring theme is the suspension. Up front, there’s a non-adjustable 43mm cartridge-type upside-down fork with 8.2 inches of wheel travel, which Kawasaki says delivers light, predictable handling. At the rear, a new Uni-Trak monoshock offers smooth, progressive early-stroke action and strong resistance to bottoming out, with stepless preload adjustment. According to the brand, the setup delivers confidence and control while remaining capable of handling off-road use.

The bike rides on a tube-type 21/17-inch wire-spoke wheel setup comprising lightweight aluminum rims laced with durable steel spokes. Wrapped in more road-biased dual-sport IRC GP-410 rubber, the setup is designed to provide stability and better bump absorption over rough terrain. Braking duties are handled by a large 300mm front disc with a dual-piston caliper and a rigid front brake master cylinder. At the rear, there’s a 230mm disc paired with a dual-piston caliper. Both calipers run 27mm pistons.

A Balance Of Form And Function

Kawasaki

The KLE 500 gets a rally-inspired design, and Kawasaki says it balances form and function. Up front, the half-fairing houses a tall, adjustable windscreen that should offer enough wind protection without hampering visibility. Moving back is the short raised tank that, complemented with the flat and long side covers, is said to allow easy body movement while off-roading. The seat is designed to improve comfort and control while allowing easy forward and rearward weight shifting. It’s complemented by an elevated handlebar and slightly foot-forward peg placement, with removable rubber grips.

A Limited Features List

Kawasaki

The base variant of the KLE 500 is built to a cost, and that shows strongest in its tech package. The standard KLE 500 ABS model comes with a basic LCD instrument panel with smartphone connectivity, LED headlights and taillights, and switchable ABS for $6,599. Stepping up to the KLE 500 SE ABS unlocks a 4.3-inch TFT display, a full LED lighting setup, a taller adjustable windscreen, a larger aluminum skid plate, and metal-reinforced handguards. The KLE 500 SE ABS model carries an MSRP of $7,499.

Where It Lands InThe Sub-500cc ADV Class

The sub-500cc adventure bike segment is a highly contested space full of some incredible options, leaning into on- or off-road intent with varying degrees depending on the manufacturer. The KLE 500, however, aims for the sweet spot, where its only real competition would be the BMW F 450 GS, which has yet to make its way to the US. The F 450 GS is positioned as a 50-50 adventure bike, but its premium features place it at the premium end of the segment.

The Honda NX500 ($6,899) is the next-closest rival, and it has been around for a long time and is known for its smooth, predictable nature. However, the NX500 is heavily road-biased and costs $300 more than the standard KLE 500 ABS. The CFMoto Ibex 450 ($5,999) is a genuine competitor with an equally off-road-ready 21/17-inch wire-spoke wheel set, known for its excellent value for money and capability. However, it lacks the service network and reliability record that buyers expect from this segment.

Meanwhile, the single-cylinder rivals, like the KTM 390 Adventure R and Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, offer genuine off-road capability and among the best suspension setups in the segment. The KTM also brings some premium electronics and adjustable suspension. But these bikes lack the refinement of a twin-cylinder engine and the reliability of a typical Japanese motorcycle. And while the Himalayan 450 is cheaper at $5,999, the KTM 390 Adventure R starts at $7,699, making it the most expensive option here.

The KLE 500 Sits Somewhere In The Middle Here

Kawasaki

It aims to be the 50-50 adventure bike, much like the F 450 GS, without the premium markup or the niceties that don’t count as essentials. From there, it delivers parallel-twin smoothness and versatility, with Japanese reliability. Its off-road-oriented suspension and wheels should let it hang with the Himalayan 450 and 390 Adventure on most trails, save for the more technical ones. Taken together, the spec sheet suggests the KLE 500 might be the sweet-spot lightweight ADV the segment has been missing.
