Your dream car is always on your mind, but at no point is it more of a distraction than Friday afternoon. It pretty much soaks up every last bit of brain power you have as that clock drags on to quitting time, making every second drag on more tortuously slow than the last. As a lifelong muscle car nut, I’m sorry to say that never goes away. You can alleviate the pain, though, by actually putting that machine in your driveway. I’ve been scouring auction sites to see what kind of action is rolling on the block. I’m here to save you the trouble of only getting to scroll when the boss’s back is turned by rounding up five unbelievable no-reserve muscle cars you can drop a bid on this weekend. You have to work fast, though. The clock’s ticking on all of them.
2003 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
My first pick is landing right on the last nerve of die-hard purists shouting, “ The Corvette isn’t a muscle car.” It’s got an LS under the hood, it’s sending the power to the rear, and you have to row the gears yourself. It’s close enough.
This 2003 Corvette Z06 is as minty as it gets with just 18,000 miles on the clock. That’s not even broken in yet, and it’s got a ton of insanely fun miles ahead of it. We’re talking a 405-horsepower factory rating in a car that handles like it’s on rails and has looks to kill. That stellar red finish seals the deal as a bona fide dream car for many. If that’s you, you need jump on this.
1980 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 4-Speed
Up next is another Chevy, but this time everyone can get on board with calling it a muscle car. It’s a 1980 Camaro Z28 with a 350 small-block under the hood. Better yet, it’s stupid-clean as a single-family-owned car with just 68,000 miles under its belt.
Aside from being clean, this is shaping up to be a smart investment. People are really starting to warm up to late second-gen Camaros these days, and you may stand to make a decent profit down the line. That said, it’s also a prime gem to hold and cherish. It’s a legitimate Z28 car with a four-speed, cementing its place at the top of the food chain for cars of the era.
1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS
Yes. It’s another Chevy, but it’s from what many would argue is the only real era worth considering when it comes to muscle cars. Better yet, it’s a 1969 SS, which puts it at the pinnacle of the golden age of American performance.
This 1969 El Camino SS is as clean as it gets. It has been refurbished, but that’s only a good thing with a 60-year-old car, as it means you don’t have the headaches Father Time would otherwise set you up with. This El Camino is also packing real heat with a 396 under the hood and a TH400 to boot. Out back, you also have 3.36:1 gears and a posi unit hiding in the 12-bolt, meaning not only is this driveline bulletproof, but you can cruise it comfortably at highway speeds to shows or to scoop up ice cream with your honey. What’s not to love?
1965 Ford Mustang Fastback 289 GT350 Tribute
Finally, a non-Chevy product. Right? This is the top of the heap for many, too. It’s a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback. Best of all, it’s styled after a GT350. Why is that better than the real thing? Because you can drive the wheels off of it without the anxiety of ruining an authentic irreplaceable piece of history.
Don’t get that twisted, though. This mean Mustang commands your respect. It’s got a screamer of a 289 under the hood. While the automatic may deter the staunchest muscle car nuts, you need to consider that it opens you up to a world of easy cruising when you’re not burying the pedal. That won’t be too often in a car like this, but some prefer not to deal with the full-time job of rowing gears whenever they want to take out their prized ride.
1970 Ford Cobra SportsRoof 429 Cobra Jet 4-Speed
We’re going back-to-back with blue ovals, but this time we’re talking about Ford’s actual muscle car—not a pony car. Not only that, but it’s just about as gnarly of a Torino as you could have ordered up in 1970.
This ‘70 Torino Cobra SportsRoof has all the right stuff. Beyond the punchy red paint job, complete with the factory-correct striping and hood scoop, you’ve got serious hardware lurking beneath it all. This thing’s set up with a 429 Cobra Jet that’s been punched out .030 over, reinforced, and set up with a free-flowing top end. We’re not given exact numbers, but the owner figures it’s north of 500 hp. Behind it is a four-speed, and out back is a 3.91:1 limited-slip setup. This thing will hook and book, and you need to call it your own if you’ve been dreaming of adding one to your collection.
