It’s hard to ignore the LS1/LS6 engine for most swaps, and understandably so. This engine is what started the entire General Motors and Chevrolet swap craze and deserves respect. However, there is a more affordable option for performance builds that’s hidden in plain sight. This overlooked LS engine is known for being incredibly durable and abundant, with tons of aftermarket support to ensure your build goes smoothly. Skipping the iconic Corvette motor for this underrated LS engine could be a no-brainer.
In the late 1990s, General Motors needed to build a cost-effective, reliable workhorse for its impressive lineup of trucks and SUVs. It developed a new LS engine to withstand the heavy towing demands and tough commercial stress of trucks like the Chevy Silverado without breaking the bank.
To keep prices down, the engine uses less expensive iron casting methods. But it still provides a solid balance of low-end torque and efficiency to replace older small-block V8 engines. Later in 2005, it got an aluminum block to shed extra weight. This provided drivers with extra juice and better front-end handling.
Meanwhile, the famous LS1/LS6 engine was designed with entirely different intentions around the same time. It’s a small-block V8 designed for the C5 Corvette to deliver lightweight aluminum performance. In 2001, the LS6 arrived as a high-output variant for the track-focused Z06 Corvette model.
This engine also improves reliability and efficiency while weighing less than older options. So, while one LS engine was built for work and the other was made for high-performance applications, the LS1/LS6 engine typically steals the show as the more popular option because it’s tied to the Corvette name and produces more power.
In 1999, the LM7 325 cubic-inch (5.3-liter) V8 engine was born. It was designed with a heavy-duty, deep-skirt cast-iron cylinder block and cross-bolted main bearing caps on a six-bolt main design for optimal durability and structural rigidity. It also has lightweight aluminum cathedral-port heads, hypereutectic cast aluminum dished pistons, and a design to lower static compression to a 9.5:1 ratio.
The L33 was introduced in 2005 with an aluminum block to reduce its weight by about 75 lbs down to 440 lbs. It adopted high-flowing cathedral-port aluminum heads, identical to the LS6/LS2 Corvette heads, and borrowed flat-tip pistons from the 4.8-liter LR4 to offset chamber volume and boost the compression ratio to 10.0:1.
While it features the same high-flowing cylinder heads as the LS6, it has strong block and cylinder walls that are less prone to distortion under high-boost turbo setups. This LS engine features more robust connecting rods and floating wrist pins compared to earlier LS1 variants, and it is about 100 lbs lighter.
It’s known for being able to withstand high amounts of stress and abuse, with the ability to last between 250,000 and over 350,000 miles. There are reports of some examples lasting beyond 400,000 to 500,000 miles. Meanwhile, the LS1/LS6 is known for lasting between 150,000 and 250,000 miles, with some examples surviving over 300,000 miles.
The LM7/L33 has Gen III architecture, which makes it highly compatible for swaps. It lacks electronic cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing. This means they have a simpler engine harness integration without problematic lifters. It is also plug-and-play ready, accepting standard LS oil pans, front accessories, headers, and transmissions.
Every part you need is readily available off the shelf with plenty of aftermarket support. This LS V8 also fits easily into full-size trucks, SUVs, muscle cars, import chassis, and smaller engine bays. While the iron LM7 block is better suited for high-boost tolerance, the L33 aluminum block manages heat extremely well and improves weight distribution.
Factory ratings for the 5.3-liter V8 range between 270 and 310 horsepower and 315 to 355 lb-ft of torque, depending on the year. However, it can easily handle more power. With basic bolt-ons like a cold air intake or custom ECU tune, it can be pushed past 350 hp. A camshaft swap and upgraded valve springs can push output beyond 400 hp. Ported heads and custom rotating assemblies can reliably reach over 500 hp.
The LM7/L33 5.3-liter V8 engine is a budget-friendly option that’s remarkably easy to find. It can be found in junkyards under the hoods of vehicles like the Chevy Tahoe, Silverado, Suburban, Avalanche, Express, GMC Yukon, Sierra, Savana, and Cadillac Escalade. Junkyard pulls typically cost about $300 to $700.
Value for remanufactured crate GM LM7 engines hovers around $2,200 to $3,700. Value for the aluminum L33 is a bit higher due to its lighter weight and higher output. Used options cost between $1,000 and $1,800 depending on mileage. Refurbished units ring in at about $2,500 to $4,500 depending on the accessories and package.
The LS1 engine commands prices between $2,000 and $85,000 depending on whether the engine was salvaged, its mileage, and if it has been fully rebuilt. The LS6 or later high-output aluminum block engine typically ranges from $3,800 to over $10,000 based on mileage and whether it has been professionally rebuilt. Individual used parts like the LS6 intake manifold sell for around $350.
General Motors didn’t keep exact production records for each engine, but the LM7/L33 5.3-liter V8 is believed to be more widely available. The LM7 was mass-produced in the millions from 1999 until 2007, while the L33 5.3-liter HO has an estimated production of over 250,000 from 2005 until 2007. Meanwhile, over 500,000 vehicles were equipped with the LS1 engine from 1997 to 2005, and exactly 34,357 models got the LS6 from 2001 to 2005.
