Why A Genesis GV70 Outperforms The Audi Q5, Even The SQ5

The compact luxury SUV segment has never been hotter. There are between 15 and 20 models on the market currently. There’s also a wide range of pricing for these SUVs starting around $41,480 for the Lincoln Corsair and the Porsche Macan (that still desperately needs a remodel) starting at $67,650. There are, of course, those that are directly in the middle, like the Genesis GV70 and the Audi Q5.

That’s a price difference of $3715, and with that price difference, you get about 32 more horsepower. With that major price difference, you should be getting more bang for your buck with Audi. Instead, the Genesis GV70 is in the “clearance bin” at a much lower rate but offers much more to start with. In fairness to the Audi, you do get a much more robust build quality and something that’s made to go well over 100 mph on the autobahn for an extended period of time, but still.

The GV70 Goes Straight For The Jugular

It’s difficult to make a new brand. It’s even more difficult to make a new luxury brand that comes out on top. Somehow, Genesis was able to provide an entry point horsepower rating that smokes the entire German lineup. Not only does it smoke its raw engine power, but it also smokes it where it counts, on the warranty. Ironically enough, the Genesis GV70 3.5T is the more expensive of the two performance vehicles.

300 Horsepower Out Of A Four Banger

From a mechanical perspective, what do you actually get for the money? The standard four-cylinder is the same 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that you can find in the Kia Stinger, Genesis GV80, G70, and G80. It produces 300 horsepower for all models and 311 lb-ft of total torque. It’s then tied to an 8-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with an all-wheel drive drivetrain. It pulls some decent MPG too, with 20 in the city and 28 MPG on the highway.

The Audi Q5 Wishes

On the flip side, the Audi answers with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is badged with the “45” moniker. It used to be the “40” that barely made 200 horsepower but has since been upgraded. It is now a 48V mild-hybrid system that outputs 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Q5 itself received a mid-generation refresh in 2025 and gave the engine the much-needed boost it was craving on the market. Without any hybrid assistance, the Genesis still beats it out.

The Genesis GV70 2.5T comes with a four-wheel independent mechanical suspension. This includes a strut, front suspension and a coil spring featuring a multi-link rear suspension also with coil springs but an anti-roll bar. It also features gas pressurized shock absorbers, and unlike the more advanced model, there is no “road preview” technology.

Speaking of technology, the Audi Q5 actually has a more technologically advanced suspension system, as opposed to the standardized mechanical one found in the Genesis. The Q5 has a five-link front and five-arm rear independent suspension layout. You don’t have to pay extra for the adaptive, damp suspension that features electronic valves. The Audi also comes with an available adaptive air suspension.

Even The SQ5 Is Looking Slow

Now we’re going to get into the more high-performance variations of these two compact SUVs. To start, let’s get into the Audi SQ5. This is powered by a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0L V6 that produces 362 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. It’s then tied to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. It, of course, also comes with the standard Quattro all-wheel-drive that helps it achieve a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.6 seconds. This model comes standard with adaptive air suspension. Even with all this technology, it still doesn’t make as much horsepower as the Genesis GV70.

The V6’s Output

Unfortunately, however, the Audi SQ5 is still no match for the Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport Prestige. This one doesn’t come with a twin scroll turbocharger and instead comes with a twin turbocharged V6 engine. Engine output: 375 horsepower at 5800 RPM and 391 lb-ft of torque at a low range of 1300 to 4500 RPM. It’s connected to an eight-speed, automatic transmission and features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The all-wheel-drive system is rear-biased and helps achieve a 0 to 60 mph time around the same as the Audi (between 4.6 and 4.9 seconds).

Pricing That Sweetens The Deal

Once again, the Genesis GV70 comes out on top not only when it comes to power, but also for pricing. The 3.5T Sport Prestige is the flagship version of this model and comes at around $74,590 MSRP. If you want the more powerful V6 engine in the Genesis, you don’t necessarily have to get to the top of the line either and instead, you can save a few thousand dollars with the Sport Advanced. It comes in at $65,910. The base model SQ5 comes in around $66,795, which isn’t much more than the “base” V6 variant of the Genesis, but it’s still technically more expensive. Finally, the most expensive Sportback Prestige SQ5 comes in at $74,495, which is technically cheaper, but it comes with a squatted roofline, limiting the cargo capacity and the price difference isn’t anything to really write home about.

Long-Term Reliability

This part should matter just as much as the power and prowess of the engines. The 2026 Audi Q5 was tested recently by IHS and was awarded the IHS top safety pick plus award. The Genesis GV70 was also awarded this title, but the Audi technically outshines in this match as it has better front crash prevention from vehicle to vehicle, but they both have acceptable headlights. JD Power gave the Genesis GV70 a below-average 76 out of 100 overall, but 81 out of 100 for quality and reliability. Audi, on the other hand, didn’t score any better with 74 in total and 73 out of 100 for quality and reliability.

Warranty Differences

Audi’s warranty is a lot like BMW’s in the sense that it only comes with a four-year, 50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. This warranty covers bumper-to-bumper, but also the powertrain. Genesis, on the other hand, offers an exceptional warranty with a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a five-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Financial Stability With a Sound Powertrain

RepairPal says that the Genesis GV70 will cost $3053 within the first five years of its maintenance schedule. The Audi, according to the same website, will cost $928 annually. However, the Audi has a reliability score on RepairPal’s website of 3.0 out of 5.0, which RepairPal does not give a score for the Genesis’ GV70. These two compact SUVs are neck and neck when it comes to power, performance, and luxury. The Genesis offers a more classical feel to the exterior and interior, while the Audi offers new and interesting tech inside and out. These two performance beasts are evenly matched at their highest outputs, but at the end of the equation, the Genesis looks like a better long-term bet.
