Finding a cruiser that genuinely works for two people is harder than it sounds. Most bikes in the segment are styled for solo riders, with passenger accommodations that feel like an afterthought — a narrow pillion perch bolted on to tick a box. If you want real two-up comfort without stepping all the way up to a full-dress tourer, the options narrow quickly. That’s exactly where the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster earns its place: it’s a proper couple’s cruiser that doesn’t ask you to sacrifice style, spend a fortune, or haul around more motorcycle than you need.
Affordable is something of a relative term here, but compared to the direct competition, the Bonneville Speedmaster really is affordable. Even if you take one small step up to a bagger from either the Indian or Harley-Davidson lineup, you will be looking at spending in excess of $15k. Step up again to a full touring bike and expect to pay well north of $20k.
Sticking with cruisers, the Nightster Special comes sharply into focus. It might be a little more compact, but it is cheaper and actually offers a bit more power. The Indian Super Scout edges into bagger territory and brings considerably more to the table — more power, more tech, and standard luggage — but with a sticker price of $16,999, you could outfit the Speedmaster with comparable accessories and still come out ahead.
Looking at metric options from Japan will certainly net some savings. Honda offers the Shadow Aero and Kawasaki the Vulcan 900 Classic LT, but they deliver uninspiring performance. Both bikes are V-twins, and both are reliable. But at the same time, they are both missing something. Something that the Speedmaster has: personality. It is something that needs to be experienced and can’t be accurately explained.

Every rider you ask will most likely have a different answer if you ask them what enough power really is. For some, enough is never enough, and for others, power isn’t really much of a concern. It is, to say the least, a subjective topic. But when you ride with a passenger, “enough” has a clear definition: the bike gets up to highway speed without fuss, and it doesn’t struggle on hills. That’s it. Also, the 2026 model boasts a larger 14-liter (3.7-gallon) fuel tank. New lightweight aluminium rims are another addition.
When carrying precious cargo, even the worst hooligans transform into responsible riders. With regard to this, Triumph’s trademark parallel-twin has more than enough power to get the Speedmaster moving, and it will maintain that speed up any incline thanks to a broad, flat torque curve. Once you get the chance to ride it on your own, it also has enough power to satisfy any hooligan, too.
Arguably, the most important thing you need in a good cruiser for couples is comfort and reliability. On the comfort front, Triumph has enhanced the touring capability with wider rider and pillion seats, thus improving comfort, and offering straighter handlebars, allowing for a more natural riding position.
In the past, reliability was not something Triumph was able to offer. At all. Today, the brand has turned over a new leaf and is arguably the most reliable of all the European manufacturers. This is not going to be a motorcycle that will leave you and your significant other stranded on the side of the road.
The Bonneville name goes back decades now, and it is a name synonymous with motorcycle culture. It is the motorcycle your neighbor used to own, the bike your sister’s boyfriend used to ride, and the bike you saw in that old movie. Today, the modern Bonneville is somewhat different, but it still oozes character. It has something other bikes just can’t replicate.
For Triumph, the style of the modern Bonneville was of paramount importance. Not just the overall aesthetic, but minor details like those fake air-cooling fins, fake carbs, and a rather effectively hidden radiator. It is fair to say that the designers went to great lengths to capture the personality of the original bike. No matter how much we hate those fake carbs — let’s just say a lot — it worked.
In the Speedmaster, we have a modern motorcycle that looks completely authentic. It is the ultimate “date night” motorcycle, which looks — and sounds — the part of any classic Bonneville, just without the “complications” that owning a classic motorcycle may entail. Unlike those old Triumphs, this one won’t make you late after failing to start for 30 minutes for no apparent reason. Those carbs are, of course, not carbs. The Speedmaster runs electronic fuel injection, a ride-by-wire throttle, cruise control, traction control, ABS, and one genuinely underrated feature for date night: LED lighting.
While those old bikes look fantastic, it is desperately hard to see anything else on the road at night with their hopeless lighting. Yes, the Speedmaster may not scream “feature-rich motorcycle” — its instrument cluster is refreshingly simple, and nothing kills a retro design theme faster than a large TFT screen. But it certainly delivers all the modern amenities that matter. For 2026, Triumpg even added the lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Traction Control to improve rider confidence. Today, there are several great retro bikes on the market, all blending contemporary technology with classic styling. None of them capture the essence of the original quite like Triumph.
