Another owner echoed this experience, with his 72,000-mile example also running perfectly. A German driver who regularly used his FK2 on the Autobahn reported no problems whatsoever across 106,000 miles of use.

To keep it strong and light, the block and cylinder head are made from aluminum, while the crankshaft is crafted from forged steel. German automaker Volkswagen introduced its EA888 turbo four-cylinder — available in 1.8 and 2.0-liter displacements — back in 2008. Since then, the engine has featured in mid-range versions of some of its most popular models, including the Golf GTI Mk.6 and Mk.7, the Arteon, and a wide range of Audi and Skoda vehicles.

The advantage of deploying the same engine across so many different vehicles is that problems surface and get resolved quickly, helping the unit earn its “bulletproof” reputation. HotCars found little in the way of consistent issues with the EA888; the most commonly reported were temperamental water pumps, which proved problematic at around 45,000 miles.

Since water pumps are a known wear item in many engines, this is largely a routine maintenance consideration rather than a design flaw. Some owners also flagged thermostats as a weak point, with one Golf Mk.7 forum member reporting that a thermostat replacement at 90,000 miles was the only issue he encountered across 123,000 miles of ownership.

Another driver added that his 85,000-mile engine had suffered no issues at all. The same sentiment appeared on Reddit, where an owner reported having to replace the thermostat on his EA888-powered Cupra Leon at 43,000 miles.

One common thread among the owners highlighted in this article is that they all prioritized regular servicing — specifically, changing the oil annually alongside the various filters that keep the engine clean.
