We get it: if you are going to spend $50,000+ on a new SUV, it better be able to do just about anything and everything. We mean commuting, road trips, towing, all-weather driving, and all-terrain driving. When we say all-terrain, we aren’t talking about some washboards on a dirt road that a Toyota Prius can handle; we mean legitimate low-speed rock crawling with a wheel in the air. Usually, that level of off-road capability would mean compromising on comfort or simply costing an exorbitant amount of money. However, there is a contender that starts under $60,000 and provides 465 pound-feet of torque, full-time 4WD, and locking center and rear differentials while remaining refined enough for everyday driving.
The most interesting midsize SUVs increasingly specialize in one area, forcing buyers to compromise elsewhere. Yet, the ideal all-around SUV needs to borrow the right qualities from each without inheriting their biggest drawbacks.
Mechanical Underpinnings Matter More Than What’s On The Outside

As SUVs become both more expensive and more specialized, the modern expectation is that an SUV should be able to serve multiple roles. While body-on-frame construction may be an archaic design by today’s standards, this tried-and-true structure still provides the best foundation for a vehicle whose priorities are towing, 4WD, durability, and off-road capability.
Larger luxury SUVs may be able to do it all, but once you factor in their higher purchase prices, increased upkeep costs and complexity, and unnecessarily large dimensions, the drawbacks become clear. What really matters at the end of the day is the mechanical underpinnings that define the SUV, not its physical appearance. A certain SUV benefits from a well-established off-road lineage that emphasized longevity before later generations continually added comfort and luxury.
On-Road Livability Is The Defining Factor

The reality is that most body-on-frame SUVs spend most of their lives on pavement, despite the constant “adventure” marketing ethos that surrounds these types of vehicles. That’s why it’s almost more important to consider how these SUVs perform on the commute and in the city rather than judging them exclusively by extreme trail specifications that most owners will never use, like wading depth.
What truly matters are details like on-road ride comfort, vehicle dimensions, fuel economy, and cabin features. So, is it possible to find a modern SUV with real off-road capability that doesn’t fall victim to the common pitfalls of past ultra-large luxury SUVs? There is one outlier nameplate that recently returned to the market and has managed to achieve this exact formula by becoming smaller and more attainable than ever before.
The 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser Finds The Middle Ground

If you hadn’t guessed yet, the SUV in question is the 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser, which has been significantly repositioned for the American market. While it still carries the same lineage as its V-8-powered predecessor, this version returns with more versatile functionality and daily livability.

If we go back to the start, Toyota introduced the Toyota BJ model in 1951 and adopted the Land Cruiser name in 1954. By 1958, it had landed stateside, and at one point, it was the only vehicle in Toyota’s entire fleet. Over the next half-century, the Land Cruiser would prove to be a global sensation known for its versatility and durability, surpassing ten million sales in 2019.
The previous-generation J200 Land Cruiser had an impressive run from 2008 to 2021, but the nameplate skipped 2022 and 2023 before returning with an all-new generation for the 2024 model year. The current generation is based on the smaller 250-series Land Cruiser Prado architecture rather than the global 300-series model sold elsewhere.

You might think, “Isn’t that a downgrade?” Not exactly; rather, it is a philosophical shift to make this new Land Cruiser more accessible than ever before. The 2021 model started above $85,665, while the 2027 model now starts at $58,080. The Land Cruiser may be smaller than before, but it also gets better fuel economy, costs less, and is more utilitarian than the previous generation.
Why Torque Output Means Everything

At the heart of every 2027 Land Cruiser is Toyota’s 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, which produces 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain achieves 23 mpg combined, and the benefits of a hybrid system for off-road use extend beyond efficiency. These include the strong low-speed response, the large torque output that comes into play when climbing and crawling, and the increased efficiency that a large-displacement naturally aspirated engine simply cannot provide.
The 2021 model-year Land Cruiser only managed 14 mpg combined due to its massive size and weight, while the 2027 Land Cruiser is about 39 percent more fuel-efficient overall. This means you save about 279 gallons of gasoline every 10,000 miles, or about $1,678 every 10,000 miles in fuel costs, assuming an average fuel price of $6 per gallon. The new Land Cruiser does have its trade-offs, which include the raised cargo floor, more complex powertrain, and the disappointing soundtrack of the turbo-four that could never match the character and growl provided by the old-school Toyota V-8. Those trade-offs might be dealbreakers — unless the off-road hardware justifies them. And that’s where the 2027 Land Cruiser makes its most surprising argument.
Serious Off-Road Hardware Without Sacrifice

The Land Cruiser does not win every specification battle against dedicated off-roaders, and that is precisely what makes its engineering approach interesting. Rather than chasing the most extreme ground clearance or suspension travel, Toyota gives every version the fundamental hardware needed to tackle difficult terrain while using a more road-friendly suspension layout.
Even The Base Model Is A Bona Fide Trail Crawler

The mechanical underpinnings found on the 2027 Land Cruiser are the same TNGA-F platform shared with a variety of larger body-on-frame vehicles, including the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner, and Lexus GX. With its fully boxed ladder frame, independent double-wishbone front suspension, and multi-link solid rear axle, the Land Cruiser has the right configuration for off-roading without sacrificing on-road manners.
The independent front suspension is a key factor, allowing for better steering precision and greater confidence on the road, while the full-time 4WD and two-speed transfer case back up its all-terrain proposition. Once you consider the locking differentials in the center and rear, along with a dedicated Crawl Control mode, you realize the Land Cruiser means business when it comes to low-speed crawling. The best part? The base-trim $58,080 Land Cruiser 1958 gets this same hardware, meaning you aren’t compromising on capability with the least expensive model.
Real-World Versatility Over Spec Sheet Figures

The 2027 Land Cruiser offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance, a 31-degree approach angle, a 25-degree breakover angle, and a 22-degree departure angle, along with a 6,000-pound maximum towing capacity. One of the key optional features of the Land Cruiser is the Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM), which utilizes front, rear, side, and under-vehicle cameras to provide a real-world view of the terrain around the SUV by combining multiple camera angles.
The MTM works in conjunction with Multi-Terrain Select, which allows for six unique off-road drive modes. The Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism (SDM) disconnects the front sway bar for better off-road wheel articulation with the simple push of a button. A Ford Bronco Badlands or Sasquatch still offers substantially more ground clearance and more aggressive geometry, but the Land Cruiser does not compromise its on-road comfort in pursuit of those extreme levels of off-road capability.
The $58,080 Trim Can Be The Ideal One-SUV Solution
The 2027 Land Cruiser impresses because it offers a lot of desirable features while keeping the ownership proposition relatively simple. There are only two trim levels to choose from, while its strong fuel economy and long hybrid warranty make owning one long-term a solid proposition.
A Surprisingly Simple Two-Grade Lineup

As we mentioned, the 2027 Land Cruiser is only available in two distinct trims, with the base model being the $58,080 Land Cruiser 1958. With the 1958 trim, you get the turbocharged hybrid powertrain, full-time 4WD, a two-speed transfer case, center and rear lockers, Crawl Control, a front skid plate, heated seats, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 2,400-watt inverter, tri-zone climate control, and wireless connectivity. Perhaps the easiest way to tell the two trims apart is by their headlights, as the 1958 trim utilizes “heritage-inspired” circular LEDs, while the more expensive trim uses rectangular LED units.
The Land Cruiser trim starts at $64,155 and also includes upgrades such as heated and ventilated SofTex seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, a power liftgate, Multi-Terrain Select, Multi-Terrain Monitor, Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism, Rigid Industries color-selectable LED fog lights, and illuminated entry. With the Land Cruiser trim, you can exclusively opt for the $4,950 Premium Package, which includes a 14-speaker JBL audio system, illuminated running boards, a power moonroof, a digital rearview mirror, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, power front seats, heated and ventilated second-row seats, Digital Key capability, a head-up display, lane-change assist, front cross-traffic alert, and traffic-jam assist.
8,379 In Fuel Savings And A 10-Year Hybrid Battery Warranty Make The Case For Long-Term Ownership

While the 23 mpg combined rating of the 2027 Land Cruiser doesn’t sound great overall, it is a massive improvement over the previous generation’s 14 mpg combined. According to our previous calculations, the difference in efficiency will save you $8,379 over five years. There is also the added benefit of two years/25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance through ToyotaCare, with the hybrid battery having a transferable 10-year/150,000-mile warranty. Certain hybrid components are also covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, further sweetening the deal.

You may still be thinking, “Why would I opt for a Land Cruiser when the 4Runner exists?” The Toyota 4Runner may be cheaper, offer more trims, have an available third row, and offer more specialized off-road trims, but the Land Cruiser is much closer to a luxury SUV experience that also happens to have serious off-road hardware.
In terms of daily comfort without compromising its all-terrain versatility, the Land Cruiser occupies its own tier. So, while the long-term reliability of this specific hybrid platform is still to be determined, Toyota’s reputation for durability is still among the strongest in the industry. The 2027 Land Cruiser may not be the biggest or the most capable midsize SUV, but it may be the one that asks the fewest compromises from prospective owners who want a one-size-fits-all package.
