But of course, there will always be other companies that are bold enough to challenge the established norm in the luxury segment. Genesis was initially the nameplate of a luxury sedan in Hyundai’s lineup, but has since grown into a luxury brand of its own.

Some luxury car buyers prioritize value, and with the Genesis GV80, that’s exactly what they’ll be getting. The 2026 GV80 starts at $57,700 for the 2.5T RWD, while the X5 starts at $68,300 for the sDrive40i. Granted, the X5 lineup already kicks off with the very iconic and well-loved B58 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six, while the GV80 range begins with a more humble 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder. But even taking the engines into account, the GV80 already offers more standard features right off the bat.

The primary differentiator of the two is that the GV80 leads the X5 significantly in terms of the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The X5 only comes with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind spot warning as standard. For features like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automatic high beams, and anything else beyond the aforementioned standard safety features, you’ll have to splurge for the $2,500 Driving Assistance Professional Package, which now adds every other ADAS feature that’s otherwise standard in most GV80 trims. Even when splurging for the range-topping GV80 3.5T Prestige AWD, you’ll still need to tick a few optional extras in the X5, which easily raises its price past what the GV80 commands.

It Comes With America’s Longest Warranty

As a sign of just how confident Genesis is in its vehicles, the GV80 comes with America’s longest vehicle warranty. Indeed, there is luxury in peace of mind, especially with a 10-year or 100,000-mile (whichever comes first) Powertrain Limited Warranty, which includes the engine, transmission, and other drivetrain components. And that’s not all, because even in terms of running costs, you already have savings from the get-go due to Genesis offering free maintenance for the first three years. All of these come on top of a very long five-year or 60,000-mile (whichever comes first) New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and this covers all components, excluding standard wear and tear.

Speaking of maintenance, Genesis is also creative in the customer service aspect, as the complimentary three-year maintenance also comes with the Genesis Service Valet program. Owners don’t even need to bring their vehicle to the dealer for maintenance. Plus, during the maintenance procedure, owners are also provided a loaner vehicle. With Genesis still massively trailing BMW in terms of sales, it is still very much on a mission to prove itself in the segment. However, with 82,331 vehicles sold in 2025, Genesis grew by 10 percent year over year. The GV80 is one of the sales leaders of the brand, and thankfully, its growth is backed by solid merits, based on our team’s review.

Distinct Design With Tasteful Appointments

With so many BMW X5s on the road, it’s going to be hard to stand out in the Beverly Hills parking lot. This gives the GV80 a unique opportunity to stand out even more, especially thanks to its mid-cycle facelift for the 2025 model year. At first glance, you might have difficulty spotting the changes, namely the reworked lower front and rear bumper, but that’s the point. The design is already mature, and so careful alterations are only needed to refine the GV80’s looks.

Inside, however, you’ll find a completely new dashboard design featuring a wide 27-inch display that combines the digital gauges and Connected Car Integrated Cockpit (ccIC) infotainment system into one unit. The result is what Genesis says is an amphitheater-inspired design, and it looks amazing. This is matched with sumptuous materials, particularly in the Advanced trims and above, as the interior is bathed in genuine wood trims. Even the quilting and the leather (or leatherette for the Select and lower trims) is buttery smooth to the touch. Advanced trims and above also get a power-folding third row, which adds practicality over the five-seat X5, but those seats are best reserved for short trips or younger passengers.

Sumptuously Stable And Comfortable

Now, if the BMW X5 is the sports sedan of the midsize luxury SUV segment, the Genesis GV80 is the stable luxury sedan. The model we tested is the 3.5T AWD Prestige, which represents the pinnacle of the range. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 is buttery smooth, but if sound is your concern, the B58 3.0-liter mild-hybrid inline-six is just in a different league. It still sounds good, though, and it delivers linear power smoothly through its eight-speed automatic. Just don’t expect a sports sedan-like handling character out of the GV80.

Instead, what it offers is secure and stable handling, one that’s perfectly suited for the typical luxury car buyer. The electronic adaptive suspension is also effective at absorbing bumps, as the Road Preview feature uses the GV80’s sensors to scan the road ahead and prime the suspension before a bump can unsettle the vehicle. It is unsurprisingly a quiet car, too, aided further by the sheer stability it offers. However, if there’s a slight con for the GV80, that would be its fuel economy. The X5 also comes as an xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, so if an electrified option is what you need—even a very mild one—then the X5 will be the better option.
