Steve McQueen’s Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT fastback carried a big-block 390 V8 through San Francisco in Bullitt, and it’s still the most famous Mustang on film.

Our HotCars Exclusive render imagines a modern 2028 Bullitt built by Ford on the S650 Dark Horse body, with Dark Horse SC-style hardware but with the power of the Mustang GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8. That setup makes 815 horsepower, beating the 807-hp Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak from the end of the Hellcat era.

Dark Highland Green paint links this render to the 2019 Bullitt and the original movie car. Up front, the blacked-out mesh grille drops the pony badge and gets a thin bright surround, a signature Bullitt touch. Tri-bar LED running lights, a vented hood with heat extractors, and a deep splitter give the nose a meaner look than any Bullitt before it.

The black multi-spoke wheels wear a thin bright lip, a modern take on the Torq Thrust-style rims. Around back, a round Bullitt emblem sits between the tri-bar taillights, while quad exhaust tips fill the lower bumper. There’s no rear wing, which keeps the clean tail Bullitt fans expect.

The recipe pairs the Dark Horse body with SC-level chassis hardware and the GTD’s engine tune. That gives you the power of Ford’s road-legal race car with rear seats and enough comfort to drive it every day.

The GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8 makes 815 hp at 7,400 rpm and 664 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm through an eight-speed dual-clutch. It started life as the 760-hp engine from the 2020–2022 Shelby GT500, but Ford heavily reworked it for sustained track use. A dry-sump oil system keeps it fed in hard corners and lets it rev to 7,650 rpm.

Pushrod rear suspension, adaptive spool-valve dampers, and a wider track stay with the GTD, along with its roughly $325,000 starting price. Our Bullitt keeps the engine and leaves the race-car hardware and the price tag behind.

The Dark Horse already brings a Torsen limited-slip differential and standard MagneRide dampers, plus a thicker rear sway bar, a strut-tower brace, and a K-brace. The Predator V8 is also the biggest engine Ford puts in a Mustang today, but the 795 hp of the SC seemed a little tame, should you ever need to chase down a Dodge Charger Hellcat around the streets of San Francisco. A fitting modern answer to McQueen’s big-block 390.

815 HP Or 500 HP: Which Bullitt Should Ford Actually Build?

At 815 hp, this Bullitt would out-muscle every Hellcat Dodge ever built. The Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye made 797 hp, and the Jailbreak version pushed that to 807 hp before the car bowed out. Every 2023 Challenger carried a “Last Call” plaque under the hood to mark the end of that generation.

Only the Demons sit above it, including the 1,025-hp Demon 170. That puts our render in rare company for a car with a back seat and a Bullitt badge.

The Dark Horse SC is the realistic middle ground on sale. It shares the GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8, rated at 795 hp and 660 lb-ft, and sends power through a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch and a carbon-fiber driveshaft. Pricing starts at $103,490 before destination, roughly a third of what the GTD costs.

That car proves Ford has already put GTD-derived power in a Dark Horse body, and it works. A Bullitt version would mostly need the paint, the badges, and the heritage details, but perhaps we would option it with the carbon-fiber driveshaft to handle the added power.

The classic Bullitt recipe points toward the regular Dark Horse instead. Its naturally aspirated 5.0-liter Coyote V8 makes 500 hp and comes with a Tremec six-speed manual as standard. It isn’t the headline number, but it’s the kind of everyday performance car the Bullitt name has always stood for.

Both supercharged Mustangs use dual-clutch gearboxes only, and that’s a sticking point for purists. Every factory Bullitt, so far, has come with a stick, so the real question is whether 815 hp is worth giving up the third pedal.

The 1968 Chase Car That Made The Mustang Bullitt Worth $3.74 Million

Warner Bros. bought two Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks for Bullitt. The car with the VIN ending in ‘559 handled most of the chase work, while the other was used for beauty shots. To survive filming, it got reinforced shock mounts, heavy-duty coil springs, Koni shocks, and roll bars.

In the film’s chase, the Mustang hunts down a black Dodge Charger R/T 440 through San Francisco and into the hills, leaving wrecked cars and a crashed motorcycle behind. The sequence runs about 10 minutes and helped Frank Keller win the Oscar for Best Film Editing. That black Charger is why a Mustang out-powering the last Hellcats feels like payback.

The hero car sold for $3,740,000 at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction on January 10, 2020, a record for a Mustang. Robert Kiernan had bought it through a 1974 Road & Track ad for $3,500, and his family used it as a daily driver.

The 2001 Bullitt was the first factory tribute, making 265 hp across a run of 5,582 cars, and the 2008 and 2009 version raised output to 315 hp.

The last one arrived for 2019 and 2020 with 480 hp, 20 hp more than the GT, helped by the Shelby GT350’s intake manifold. It came only with a six-speed manual and topped out at 163 mph.

The film turns 60 in 2028, and Ford has usually timed its Bullitts around anniversaries. So tell us which version you’d rather see: an 815-hp monster with GTD power, or a 500-hp Dark Horse Bullitt with a manual?
