Jaguar is unveiling the Type 01, its first production EV and the car carrying its entire relaunch, in New York on October 6, 2026. Not London. Not Birmingham, home to the brand’s Solihull plant. New York.

That venue choice is as much the story as the car itself. The Type 01 is a four-door electric GT packing a triple-motor setup that produces over 1,000 horsepower, built on Jaguar’s new JEA 850V platform, and priced from roughly £120,000 ($125,000 to $130,000). Those numbers put it in the same conversation as the Lucid Air Sapphire and Rimac’s electric performance halo cars, not classic Jaguar GTs like the XJ220 or the old XJ sedan it’s meant to spiritually replace. By picking New York for the reveal, Jaguar is telling the world exactly who it thinks its next buyer actually is.

A Reveal Built To Answer The Type 00 Backlash

The Type 01 arrives roughly two years after Jaguar’s Type 00 concept and its “Copy Nothing” rebrand blew up across social media, generating plenty of attention and just as much criticism of Jaguar’s new design language and messaging. That concept never had to sell anything. The Type 01 does.

Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover framed the production car as the payoff for that reset, saying the brand has “reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before.” The pressure now shifts from generating headlines to convincing people with £120,000 to spend that the Type 01 is worth owning, not just discussing. Jaguar has already shown camouflaged prototypes and interior shots ahead of the reveal, but kept the finished exterior under wraps until New York, which tells you how much weight the company is putting on this single unveiling.

1,000-Plus Horsepower Puts Jaguar In New Company

The Type 01 rides on Jaguar’s new JEA 850V architecture, with one motor up front and two on the rear axle for standard all-wheel drive, a 120kWh battery, and an output north of 1,000 horsepower and roughly 1,300 Nm of torque. Jaguar says that’s enough to do 0-62 mph in under 3.5 seconds, tuned for a progressive power delivery rather than a single violent launch. Real-world range is targeted at around 430 to 435 miles, with 350kW DC fast charging capable of adding 200 miles in under 15 minutes.

Those figures move Jaguar out of the conversation it used to have with Porsche’s and Bentley’s combustion GTs and into direct competition with Lucid’s Air lineup and Rimac’s ultra-high-performance EVs. It’s also, by Jaguar’s own account, the most powerful production car the brand has ever built, gas or electric, which is a notable claim for a company that once sold supercharged V8 XJRs and the XJ220.

Why New York, Not Britain, Is The Real Signal

Jaguar could have revealed the Type 01 at home. It didn’t. North America has been identified as a key growth market for Jaguar Land Rover as part of its broader £18 billion investment in new platforms and technology, and the New York debut puts the car directly in front of the wealthy American luxury-EV buyers who are already cross-shopping Lucid and Rimac rather than traditional British GTs. Production will still happen at Solihull starting early 2027, with UK and US deliveries both targeted for summer 2027, but the choice of reveal city tells you where Jaguar expects its first real demand to come from.

That’s a real departure from how Jaguar has typically launched its flagship cars, and it comes as the brand becomes the only fully electric marque inside the JLR portfolio, while Range Rover and Defender keep selling combustion and hybrid powertrains. Jaguar is also eyeing Gulf markets, where buyers have historically prized petrol character over EV spectacle, which means the Type 01’s reception in New York could set the tone for how hard a sell the car becomes everywhere else. Pricing, range, and delivery timing weren’t locked down at reveal, and those details, not the stage Jaguar chose, will ultimately decide whether this gamble pays off.
