Citroën has released new images of the reborn 2CV ahead of its unveiling later this week, showcasing its throwback design cues.

One of the stars of next week’s Paris motor show, the new 2CV has been conceived to give “buying power” back to European motorists, according to Citroën chief Xavier Chardon. It will be “a true people’s car designed for real life”, he said.

The new pictures show its dome-shaped headlights, set high on its front wings, as well as deep-set bonnet strakes reminiscent of the extrusions on early 2CVs. It also has an open air duct between its front wings and bonnet, a cue found on later examples of the famed ‘Tin Snail’.

Meanwhile, it rides on large steel-style wheels wrapped in Michelin rubber, recalling the tyre firm’s significant involvement in the development of the original.

Autocar exclusively broke the news that Citroën was plotting the 2CV’s revival in January 2025, as part of a bid to tap into opportunity in Europe’s affordable car segment. It is expected to become the brand’s entry-level car, bridging the gap between the Ami quadricycle and the more conventional C3 crossover.

It will be an EV and, Chardon said, “the new 2CV will democratise electric mobility”. To that end, Citroen previously confirmed it will be priced at less than €15,000 (£12,700), and that it has been designed to take advantage of the European Union’s ‘E-Car’ proposal – a ruleset that would heavily incentivise sales of small electric cars built in the EU.

“The future of mobility will not be won by the most complex cars but by the simplest and the most intuitive ones,” Chardon said. “What truly matters is to be relevant.”

The 2CV will be revealed at 6pm on Sunday 11 October.
