Acura has confirmed the RDX Hybrid will arrive in 2028, marking the brand’s return to the compact luxury hybrid SUV segment after years away. The timing is deliberate: Acura is positioning the RDX Hybrid as a Honda-platform alternative in a space currently owned by the Lexus NX 350h and Genesis GV70 Hybrid — and it’s entering just as that competition gets significantly stiffer.

The announcement comes from Gary Robinson, planning chief at American Honda, who spoke to Automotive News about the brand’s revised electrification roadmap. The RDX Hybrid has been previewed by Acura’s Hybrid SUV Prototype concept, with exterior styling expected to follow the new design language introduced on the Nexera concept. What Acura hasn’t confirmed yet are specific powertrain figures — but the competitive landscape it’s walking into is already well defined.

What The RDX Hybrid Is Up Against In 2028

The Lexus NX just got meaningfully better. Unveiled on September 1, the refreshed 2027 NX 350h upgrades to Lexus’s sixth-generation hybrid system, which integrates the transaxle, motor, and power control unit into a single eAxle assembly — saving roughly 22 pounds and lowering the center of gravity in the process. The result is a combined output of 199 horsepower in the standard NX 350h, with the system also benefiting from silicon carbide semiconductors in the inverter for improved efficiency. The current 2026 NX 350h produces 240 hp and starts at $46,570 including destination; pricing for the refreshed model hasn’t been announced yet, but an increase is expected.

The Genesis GV70 Hybrid rounds out the competitive set. While the research bundle’s GV70 coverage focuses on the fully electric Electrified variant, the GV70 Hybrid has established itself as a premium-feeling compact SUV with strong interior quality and Genesis’s five-year concierge service backing it up — factors that matter to the luxury buyer Acura is also chasing.

For Acura, the 2028 window gives the brand roughly two model years to finalize a powertrain that can answer both of those rivals on efficiency and performance. That’s a tight but achievable timeline given Honda’s existing hybrid architecture.

Acura’s Hybrid Strategy And What The Concept Previews

The Hybrid SUV Prototype concept serves as the clearest preview of where the RDX Hybrid is headed visually — slim, aggressive LED lighting and a design vocabulary that aligns with the Nexera concept’s sharper aesthetic. Acura hasn’t released powertrain specs for the production RDX Hybrid, and Robinson stopped well short of confirming exact figures. What the brand has made clear is that the RDX Hybrid fits into a revised electrification plan that prioritizes hybrid powertrains over full battery-electric vehicles in the near term — a pivot that follows the discontinuation of the ZDX electric SUV and the cancellation of the RSX.

Honda’s existing two-motor hybrid system, used across several platforms, provides a credible technical foundation. Whether Acura tunes it for efficiency-first positioning (to undercut the NX 350h on fuel economy) or leans into a performance-adjacent angle (to differentiate from the GV70 Hybrid’s more comfort-oriented character) will define how competitive the RDX Hybrid actually is when it lands.

The Bigger Picture: Acura’s Lineup Is Shrinking Before It Grows

Before the RDX Hybrid arrives, Acura’s lineup will contract to just three nameplates — the Integra, ADX, and MDX — following the ZDX’s exit and the end of current RDX production. That’s a notable gap for a brand that once fielded six models. The RDX Hybrid’s 2028 arrival starts to fill it, followed by a larger three-row flagship SUV — tentatively called the Acura XL — expected in late 2029 to compete with the Lexus TX and Buick Enclave.

For buyers who’ve been waiting on a hybrid RDX, the 2028 date is the relevant one. The XL is a longer-horizon story. Robinson acknowledged the opportunity plainly: “There’s opportunity in different places, and SUV is the biggest part of the premium market today.” With the NX now refreshed and the GV70 Hybrid already a known quantity, Acura will need to arrive with a compelling package — not just a hybrid badge — to earn real consideration in this segment.
