While there is no question that the SUV is the dominant force in the automotive market, does that truly mean the traditional sedan is dead and gone for good? Not according to the latest September 2026 sales data from Genesis, with one of its least expensive models recording a significant sales increase. The interesting part is that this growth comes despite the Korean luxury brand’s lineup being primarily defined by crossovers, while its larger luxury sedans continue to struggle to gain momentum. Even more intriguing is that recent updates have taken features away rather than added them, requiring us to look beyond the sales figures to understand what buyers truly want from a luxury sedan in 2026 and beyond.

Genesis Is Growing, But Its Luxury Sedans Tell Different Stories

Genesis recorded 8,063 U.S. sales in September 2026, up 18 percent year over year. However, that growth is uneven across its lineup, making one model’s performance particularly noteworthy.

The GV70 And GV80 Continue To Drive SUV Demand

If you are wondering what the best-selling vehicle in Genesis’ lineup is, it is the Genesis GV70, which sold about 3,000 units in September, more or less matching its performance a year ago. Year-to-date sales increased from 23,902 to 26,674, a 12 percent improvement. Meanwhile, the larger and more expensive Genesis GV80 delivered a stronger monthly increase, climbing from 1,776 units to 2,430 units, or 37 percent. The GV80’s year-to-date sales also climbed 10 percent, from 16,504 to 18,161, demonstrating that SUVs remain absolutely central to the brand’s success in the U.S. market.

The G80 And G90 Show Why Sedan Sales Are So Surprising

Looking at Genesis’ larger sedans, the Genesis G80 recorded just 312 sales in September, compared with 306 a year earlier, indicating relatively flat demand. The flagship, chauffeur-focused Genesis G90 moved even fewer units, with just 104 sold in September 2026 compared with 131 in September 2025. Despite these challenges in the sedan segment, Genesis’ overall September sales increased from 6,857 to 8,063 units, while year-to-date volume rose from 58,830 to 61,733. Yet, one of Genesis’ smallest and most affordable vehicles is outperforming expectations in a segment where its larger sedans have struggled to find similar momentum.

The Genesis G70 Is Behind The Brand’s Unexpected Sales Surge

This unexpected standout is the Genesis G70, the brand’s entry-level sport sedan, which is currently generating sales numbers its more expensive siblings aren’t coming close to matching.

September Sales Nearly Doubled Despite The Sedan Market’s Challenges

The Genesis G70 sold 1,711 units in September 2026, compared with 858 in September 2025, a 99 percent year-over-year increase — the highest of any Genesis model. Its 14 percent year-to-date increase also outpaced the GV70’s 12 percent gain, with sales reaching 9,440 units, up from 8,282 during the same period in 2025. While a monthly increase of 99 percent is certainly surprising, the year-to-date figures provide a broader perspective: G70 sales are increasing overall, and the growth isn’t limited to a single month.

When considering the Genesis G70’s competition, we’re talking about segment staples such as the BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The 2027 Genesis G70 starts at $43,800, undercutting the $48,000 2026 BMW 330i Sedan by more than $4,000. Both sedans offer turbocharged four-cylinder engines, and while the Genesis produces 300 horsepower compared with the BMW’s 255 horsepower, their real-world performance is relatively similar. Both also offer an eight-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel drive. While the Genesis is the more affordable option, that alone cannot explain why its sales have improved so sharply.

For 2026, Genesis streamlined the G70’s configuration options, while the 2027 model year brought some of the most significant changes of this generation so far.

Genesis Removed Several Premium Features And Trim Choices

For 2026, the G70 received several changes, including the removal of the electronically controlled adaptive suspension from the 3.3T Sport Prestige, along with the discontinuation of the power trunk, Nappa leather, and diamond-tufted upholstery options. Other deleted features included the suede headliner and leather-wrapped horn covers.

However, Genesis also added the Prestige Graphite trim and a heated steering wheel to the 2.5T AWD and higher trims. The 360-degree camera became standard on the 3.3T while remaining optional on the 2.5T Prestige. The base price increased only modestly between model years, potentially reflecting the removal of some premium features that may have appealed to fewer buyers.

The 2027 Model Loses Its Twin-Turbo V6 — But That Came Later

Moving to the 2027 model year, which is not covered by these September sales figures, the G70 receives one of the most significant changes of its current generation: the complete removal of the 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 and its associated trims. For shoppers who prioritize performance, this means the G70 has lost some of its appeal.

However, Genesis made this change as it reshaped the lineup, potentially reflecting a shift in priorities rather than a direct response to the September sales figures. It is also possible that the V6’s discontinuation encouraged some buyers to snap up remaining 2026 inventory, but this remains a theory rather than a verified explanation.

Genesis May Have Finally Built A Sedan Buyers Still Want

Could the G70’s value proposition be what is keeping it relevant, rather than its equipment list or multiple engine options?

Performance And Everyday Usability Give The G70 A Distinct Role

The G70’s sales increase this year does not mean that the sedan is back. What it does suggest, however, is that a well-positioned luxury sedan can still find buyers despite the clear dominance of SUVs. The G70’s turbo-four delivers meaningful performance without requiring the more expensive V6 option, while available all-wheel drive broadens its appeal to shoppers who want year-round usability.

While the G80 and G90 are more focused on traditional executive-luxury buyers, the G70 remains compact, with a sportier character that distinguishes it from the rest of the lineup. At $43,800, it is also Genesis’ most affordable offering, with the best-selling GV70 next in price at $49,350.

One Strong Month Is Encouraging, But The Next Sales Reports Matter More

While there are several plausible reasons for the G70’s growing appeal, we still cannot definitively explain what caused September’s sales spike. Genesis’ September sales increased by 18 percent overall, while year-to-date sales rose by approximately five percent.

Context matters, however: despite its significant increase, G70 year-to-date sales remain well below those of the GV70, at roughly 35 percent of the crossover’s volume. When the year-end sales reports arrive, we will have a much better idea of whether the G70’s momentum continues. The sedan segment still has a pulse, but only time will tell whether this demand lasts or eventually fades.
