BMW has never been afraid of building enormous motorcycles, but its upcoming R 20 could take things to another level. With a monstrous 2,000cc boxer engine and enough muscle to make American cruisers nervous, this German brute could be something special. Our sister site TopSpeed has imagined what a production-ready R 20 might look like, and frankly, we’re already reaching for our wallets.

The BMW R 20 Looks Like A Muscle Bike With An Attitude Problem

TopSpeed’s render design concept strips the upcoming 2028 BMW R 20 down to the essentials, leaving that massive boxer engine hanging out in all its glory. And honestly, with cylinders sticking out that far, who needs crash bars? There’s a sculpted fuel tank, a round headlight, a minimalist solo seat, and a beautifully clean rear end. The chunky tires, exposed mechanical components, and shaft-driven rear wheel give this machine some serious muscle-bike attitude.

The render also features a semi-digital instrument cluster, upside-down forks, and modern braking hardware. It’s essentially BMW’s idea of a stripped-down muscle cruiser, only with two enormous cylinders sticking out sideways. Subtlety clearly wasn’t invited to the design meeting.

A 2,000cc Boxer Vs American V-Twin Motorcycles

Here’s where things get interesting. The R 20 concept uses a 2,000cc boxer-twin derived from the R 18’s 1,802cc engine, which produces 91 horsepower and 120 pound-feet of torque. BMW hasn’t revealed final production figures, but we’d certainly expect the bigger engine to deliver more muscle.

For perspective, Harley-Davidson’s Milwaukee-Eight 121 measures 1,982cc, while Indian’s Thunderstroke 116 displaces 1,890cc. That gives BMW some serious displacement bragging rights, although horsepower and torque will ultimately determine how much trouble it can cause.

BMW could also use this engine for an entire family of motorcycles, including cruisers, baggers, and touring machines. Nothing’s confirmed yet, but the possibilities are pretty exciting. If the production R 20 looks anything like TopSpeed’s creation, Harley-Davidson and Indian might have a rather large German problem on their hands.
