5 Cheap Muscle Cars Under $20,000 Up for Bid
Muscle cars aren’t as cheap as they used to be. That’s just a cold, hard truth we budget-minded gearheads have to get used to. That doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune to reel in your dream ride, though. Especially if you’re really only interested in something you could drive the wheels off of without worrying about it.
No, you don’t need to start with a total basket case as I did with my ‘69 Dodge Charger. If your budget is shy of $20,000, you could still land something pretty sweet. Don’t believe me? I rounded up five cheap muscle cars you can still bid on this weekend. Don’t wait for someone else’s say-so, though; some of these auctions end in just a few hours.
1966 Ford Mustang Coupe
First up is a 1966 Ford Mustang coupe. No, it’s not a fastback, but that’s a good thing for buyers looking for something reasonably priced. That said, it’s got plenty of good hardware. It’s powered by the shrieking 289 Ford nuts love, it’s got a three-speed automatic and a 2-series gear out back. That highway gear means you can drive it in modern traffic without tearing the driveline to shreds. Sealing the deal is a drop-dead gorgeous restoration job. Right now, the current bid sits at $7,500. It’ll definitely go for more, but you’ll never know what kind of deal you can land if you don’t put your bid in the running.
1973 Dodge Dart Restomod
Yes. We’ve got a prime-time Mopar on this list. Even wilder is that it’s got a Hemi under the hood. What we’re looking at is a 1973 Dodge Dart restomod. It’s rough on the outside, and that makes it absolutely perfect. The interior is mint, and under the hood is a Gen 3 5.7 Hemi backed by a Tremec TKX and a 3.91 gear out back. This isn’t that much different than what I’m running in my 1969 Dodge Charger with a BluePrint crate engine. It’s the perfect driving combo, especially with that rear gear ratio. This thing will get up like a dog with its tail on fire and absolutely hum down the freeway. That rough paint job just means you can enjoy all of that modern Hemi goodness without a heavy conscience. The current bid is at just $3,700. If I were in the market, this is the car I’d buy.
1990 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback 5-Speed
Here’s another one I think is an insanely good buy for a gearhead looking to skip the line to the top. It’s a 1990 Ford Mustang Foxbody, which is sort of in the “in” crowd these days. Love or hate the ‘80s look, there’s no denying that the 408 it’s packing makes this something special. These cars are lightweight and don’t need much to get up and go. You can count on that stroker small-block making good power, too, even if we’re not given any hard numbers. It’s also working with a Tremec TKX and a Ford 8.8 out back, with cherry freshness all around. With a current bid of $13,000, this is the one to place a bid on if you want a killer Fox in your fleet.
1972 Ford Mustang Hardtop Sprint Package
Yes. We’re looking at a third Mustang. Hey, that’s what you should expect in the realm of affordable muscle cars. No, this one isn’t commonly associated with trendy rides, but that’s just right for someone looking to keep it cheap. But if you need a pop-culture reference to tie it to, this 1972 Ford Mustang Hardtop isn’t that far off from the ‘Stang that appears on-screen in the latter half of Death Proof. It’s also a Sprint Package car that pays homage to the 1972 Summer Games. Under the hood is a 302 V8 with an automatic behind it, and it’s in overall decent condition. I’d be willing to bet you could take this obscure piece of US history home for a smokin’ deal, with the current bid sitting below $3,000 at the time of writing this.
1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
We’re wrapping this list up with an absolutely gnarly second-gen Camaro. This 1979 model is packing heat with a 408 stroker backed by a TH400 and a 4.56 gear out back. The ladder bars lurking beneath are your signal to hold on because this is about as down and dirty as budget muscle cars get. Yeah, it’s rough around the edges, the interior is busted, and there’s some rust, but this thing will roast tires like nothing else or force you to sit down and shut up until your foot backs off the throttle. The wild part is that the current bid of $3,000 shows you might be able to absolutely steal this handful of a monster when the clock runs out in less than 24 hours. Jump if you’re going to jump.
