This Mini Cooper May Officially Lose The One Trait That Defined It For Decades

Since Alec Issigonis sketched the original Mini in 1959, front-wheel drive has been as fundamental to the car’s identity as its round headlamps and short overhangs. That may be about to change. BMW Group engineers confirmed at the launch of the Gen6 platform that the firm has no plans to develop a viable front-drive unit for the architecture — and that decision could force Mini’s hand on its next-generation Cooper.

The Gen6 platform already underpins BMW’s Neue Klasse electric lineup, including the new iX3 SUV and i3 saloon. If Mini moves onto it — which multiple sources indicate is the plan for the next electric Cooper — the car would become rear-wheel drive for the first time in its 67-year history. BMW development boss Joachim Post has previously told Autocar the Mini could follow the 1 Series in making the switch, framing the decision around “sheer driving pleasure” and finding “the optimum for the package.”

Why The Gen6 Platform Makes FWD Essentially Impossible

The current Cooper Electric is built in China on a bespoke front-drive platform shared with the Mini Aceman crossover — a setup that has nothing to do with BMW’s next-generation architecture. Gen6 is a different animal entirely. The platform’s rear motors, as used in the iX3 and i3, come with full gearboxes. The smaller front-axle drive units fitted to the four-wheel-drive variants of those cars do not. BMW engineers told Autocar directly that there are no plans to develop a front-drive-capable version of Gen6, which effectively closes the door on a conventional FWD layout for any Mini that adopts it.

There is one important nuance here. The petrol-powered Cooper is expected to continue through the 2030s on a separate, evolved architecture — meaning it could remain front-driven while the electric Cooper moves to rear-wheel drive. That would create a meaningful split between the two variants, not just in powertrain but potentially in character and even visual identity, since the two models would be built on fundamentally different underpinnings.

What Rear-Wheel Drive Actually Means For How A Mini Drives

The handling argument for RWD in a small electric car is more straightforward than it might seem. The current Cooper Electric already weighs around 400 pounds more than its petrol equivalent — a gap that blunts the agility Mini has always traded on. Moving the motor to the rear addresses this in two ways: it improves front-to-rear weight distribution, and it removes the competing demands placed on the front tires, which in a FWD car must handle both steering and power delivery simultaneously.

With the battery pack sitting low between the axles and the drive motor at the rear, the Gen6 layout could actually produce a more dynamically balanced Mini than the current electric car manages. BMW’s development boss has pointed to “sheer driving pleasure” as the benchmark, and on a tight back road, a rear-driven Cooper with a low center of gravity has the ingredients to be genuinely entertaining rather than merely adequate. The comparison that keeps coming up in engineering discussions is the current Cooper S — where each horsepower moves fewer than 15 pounds of car. If the next-generation electric Cooper hits similar ratios, the RWD layout could amplify that rather than dilute it.

The Design Direction: R50 Proportions, Not A Retro Museum Piece

While the platform debate plays out, Mini design chief Holger Hampf has been clear about where the next Cooper’s visual identity is headed. Early sketches are drawing on the 2001 R50 — the first BMW-era Mini — for its proportions: short overhangs, upright glass, a chunky roofline, and the relationship between round headlamps and a simple grille opening that Hampf describes as “non-negotiable.”

“You can ask a Brit or a German or an Italian, you can ask a five-year-old, and they will recognize a Mini based on the proportions of the car,” Hampf told Autocar. The intent is not nostalgia for its own sake but a modern interpretation — what he calls “clever use of space” and “smile-creating surprises” alongside a distinctly British character. He has also left the door open to a slightly smaller footprint, acknowledging that Mini debates the size question constantly, while confirming the three-door body option will survive into the next generation.

Timeline And What Comes Next

None of this is imminent. The current Cooper only launched in 2024, and a facelift is still at least two years away. The next-generation model almost certainly won’t arrive until the early part of the next decade. In the meantime, Hampf says Mini will use facelifts and new derivatives to signal the direction of travel — effectively road-testing design language and positioning before the full platform switch commits the brand.

What makes this moment significant is that the decision is being shaped now, at the engineering level, by BMW’s broader platform strategy. The 1 Series is already heading to rear-wheel drive as it gains an electric option on Gen6. Mini is likely to follow. Whether that turns out to be a betrayal of the brand’s founding principle or the most interesting thing to happen to a Cooper in decades depends entirely on execution — and on whether BMW gives the engineers the latitude to make a small, light, rear-driven electric hatchback that actually rewards the driver.
