In the true spirit of 1960s muscle cars, Detroit dealerships rebelled against limitations and bans placed by automakers like Ford, Chevrolet, and Detroit. There were strict rules preventing larger engines from being placed in lightweight cars. But dealerships craved high-power performance as racing culture boomed and automotive rivalries intensified. So they took advantage of clever loopholes and workarounds to stuff big-block V8 power into compact bodies to create outlawed supercars. They became so popular that a few rare models eventually entered production.
In 1967 and 1968, buyers could depend on Bob Tasca Sr. to hand-build a Ford Mustang with a 429 Cobra Jet engine. He was frustrated by the 390 GT Mustang as it seemed uncompetitive, so he got master mechanic Billy Loomis to help him engineer the KR-8, or experimental fastback, with a mix-and-match parts bin hack. Using off-the-shelf parts from the Ford catalog allowed them to bypass strict factory performance limits.
They took a 428 Police Interceptor big-block V8 engine and paired it with high-flowing 427 low-riser cylinder heads. The pistons were fly-cut in the block for valve clearance. Plus, they added a Police Interceptor aluminum intake manifold and free-flowing exhaust headers. This experimental Mustang can fly with a 0 to 60 mph time of roughly 5.4 seconds and complete a quarter mile in about 13.39 seconds at 104 MPH and top speed of 125 mph.
It was likely underrated, as dyno testing shows that it actually produces over 400 hp. Once this Mustang showed that it was faster than factory options, it exploded. The car was featured in Hot Rod magazine, and thousands of people wrote letters to Ford, forcing it into production in April 1968. The Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet quickly dominated NHRA stock classes.
Norman “Mr.Norm” Kraus opened a Dodge dealership back in 1962, and it quickly became the largest Dodge dealership in the world with a reputation for specializing in high-performance builds. Engineers told him that stuffing large engines like the 383 and 440 couldn’t be done, but he proved them wrong.
To place the 440 cubic-inch big-block engine in the compact Dodge Dart, Mr.Norm ordered cars without engines. Then the engines were installed by Hurst-Campbell, which is now known as Hurst Performance, with a few modifications like shaving about a quarter-inch off the K-member, fabricating heavy-duty engine mounts, and tapping an extra hole near the block’s oil pump.
The engine was paired with an A727 Torque Flight automatic transmission, and once they were delivered to the dealership in Chicago, they gained exclusive dyno-tuning and distributor adjustments under the supervision of Mr.Norm. The GGS 440 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds with a quarter-mile time of 13.3 seconds at 105 MPH with a top speed of 125 MPH.
Not only did Norm prove that building the car was possible, but he created one of the most brutal drag-strip weapons available, and it became wildly successful. About 50 GSS Dodge Dart models were made before Chrysler made it factory-official in 1969. Also, it was probably underrated, with an output that’s really closer to 420 to 450 hp.
The 1968 Royal Pontiac Bobcat is the cat’s meow. This high-performance legend was created by the Ace Wilson Royal Pontiac dealership in Royal Oak, Michigan. Because Royal Pontiac operated as an independent dealership, it could legally sell over-the-counter performance parts, mail-order tune-up kits, and engine swaps.
Ace Wilson and his marketing partner Jim Wangers worked with Pontiac executives like John Delorean to build high-performance muscle cars under stealthy badges as they maintained a standard stock appearance. The cars technically complied with corporate rules while leaving the assembly line.
With the standard Royal Bobcat kit, factory equipment was optimized by mechanics Milt Shornack and Dave Warren as they re-jetted the carburetors, re-curved the distributor, and installed thinner copper head gaskets. These upgrades optimized spark timing and increased compression.
As a result, the 1968 Royal Bobcat can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.2 seconds with a 13.8-second quarter-mile time at 104 MPH and a top speed of about 117 mph. This is another outlaw car that’s believed to be underrated, with an output that’s actually closer to 425 hp. But it never made it to the production line.
Don Yenko remains a legendary name for Chevrolet fans as he pushed power limits as a dealership owner and racer. In 1967 and 1968, he took it upon himself to swap 427 cubic-inch engines into stock Camaro models in his dealership in Pennsylvania to skirt around corporate engine-size bans.
Then in 1969, he used the General Motors Central Officer Production Order (COPO) system to bypass the 400 cubic-inch engine limit while ordering factory Camaro models with the heavy-duty L72 427 engine. The COPO system allowed dealers or fleet buyers to request customer, non-standard builds with the use of specific order codes.
The 427 ci big-block V8was paired with a Muncie M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle with Positraction and 4.10 gearing. The Yenko 427 Camaro can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.4 seconds and complete a quarter mile in roughly 13.5 seconds at 105 MPH with a top speed of 140 mph.
Its actual power output is believed by historians to be closer to 450 hp. About 1k015 L72 COPO Camaros were produced by Chevrolet on the assembly line in 1969. Once the core cars were delivered, Yenko customized them with his signature touches such as the seat headrest emblems, sYc graphics, and special wheels.
Joel Rosen of Motor Performance and Baldwin Chevrolet went above and beyond to fulfill the need for speed with extreme Corvette builds to blow your hair back. Buyers could order a Chevy Corvette through the Baldwin dealership and have them modified by Motor Performance. The cars were delivered with street-legal performance that could be fully financed through the dealership.
Blueprint-balanced 454 cubic-inch big block V8 engines were turned based on LS6/LS7 specs to push over 500 hp. The engine is paired with a Holley three-barrel carburetor or gigantic 1050-cfm double pumpers and an aluminum high-rise intake manifold. Plus, the cars feature phase II/III capacity discharge electronic ignition.
To handle intense raw power, the suspension gained Super-Bite traction bars and heavy-duty rear leaf/coil modifications with upgraded heavy-duty or Koni adjustable shock absorbers. The car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.4 seconds and crush a quarter mile in about 11.5 seconds at over 120 mph on street tires. It also has a top speed of roughly 150 MPH.
Rosen was so confident about its performance that the car came with a handwritten money-back guarantee to run a quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds. The 525 hp rating is conservative, as these engines could be tuned to deliver closer to 600 hp. Only an estimated 10 custom Baldwin-Motion Phase III GT Corvette models were ever made, making them incredibly rare.
