The Yamaha MT-125 has been a sharp, entry-level, A1-license-compliant naked motorcycle in Europe for over a decade. It’s aimed at budding riders who want a taste of motorcycling at an accessible price and with forgiving performance. Following the recent update to larger MT models, Yamaha has updated the MT-125 for 2027 with a more aggressive look and improved comfort while keeping its accessibility intact. We don’t anticipate seeing it Stateside, though we recognize how important it is globally.
The Yamaha MT-125 was launched in 2014, mainly for European countries and select international markets as an A1-license-friendly naked motorcycle. As such, the manufacturer has distilled the MT philosophy into a small-displacement, frugal package that lets new riders learn before moving up to larger motorcycles. The new 2027 Yamaha MT-125 retains the same DNA but with an updated look that better matches larger MT motorcycles.
The biggest update for the 2027 model follows the next-generation MT design formula, seen in the MT-07 and MT-09 motorcycles. Up front is a new headlight cowl with a dark, smoked, transparent front mask, a single projector LED lamp, and two-position LED lights beneath it. The tank design is updated to look more muscular and improve contact, with larger, more angular tank shrouds on either side.
Yamaha has also updated the seat design to give it a more stretched silhouette and improve comfort during cornering and commuting. The seat sits 31.88 inches off the ground, making it easier for beginner riders to flat-foot. The rear stays short and sleek for a mass-forward stance. Meanwhile, high-contrast color schemes match the bike’s dynamic design.
The tech package also gets minor updates, with the 4.2-inch TFT display replaced by a 5-inch unit with smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation. Rider aids include standard ABS and traction control.
The 2027 MT-125 carries over the same powerplant: a 125cc single-cylinder producing 15 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 8.45 lb-ft of torque at 8,000 rpm and returning a claimed 117.6 mpg. The engine features variable valve timing that improves low- to mid-range torque without sacrificing top-end power. The six-speed gearbox is paired with a slipper-and-assist clutch.
The powerplant sits in a Deltabox frame with an aluminum swingarm, tuned for sharp handling and light weight. Suspension is managed by a non-adjustable 41mm USD fork and a link-type monoshock with preload adjustment. The entry-level naked also features a radial-mount caliper working on a 292mm disc up front and a 220mm disc out back. A 304.24-pound weight keeps the bike approachable for beginners.
The 2027 Yamaha MT-125 will be available in four color options: Ice Storm, Redline White, Icon Blue, and Tech Black. Yamaha hasn’t revealed the MSRP yet but says it will arrive at European dealerships early next year. The bike will not be coming to the United States, so the MT-03 will remain the gateway into the Yamaha MT lineup.
