2027 Toyota Crown Gets Fifth-Gen Hybrid Power, Paddle Shifters, and Sharper Style
Toyota announced the 2027 Crown today, and the updates go well beyond a cosmetic refresh. Three of the four grades — XLE, Limited, and Nightshade — step up to the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5), and all three now come standard with paddle shifters, giving the Crown’s crossover-sedan formula a noticeably more driver-focused edge.
At the top of the lineup, the Platinum grade keeps its Hybrid MAX powertrain, which puts out 340 net combined horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque through a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and a direct-shift six-speed automatic. Adaptive Variable Suspension is now standard on Platinum, and the grade also gains standard red brake calipers — a small but pointed signal about where Toyota is positioning this trim.
THS 5 Brings More Efficiency and a More Engaging Feel to Three Grades
The fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with front and rear electric motor-generators through a continuously variable transmission. EPA-estimated combined fuel economy comes in at 40 mpg across the XLE, Limited, and Nightshade grades — the same efficient number the Crown has chased since launch, now with a more refined powertrain underneath it.
What’s new is how the system manages braking. An electronically controlled brake setup coordinates regenerative and hydraulic braking simultaneously, recovering more electrical energy without the grabby, disconnected feel that plagued earlier hybrid brake systems. The Electronic On-Demand AWD system on these three grades uses a separate rear-mounted electric motor to distribute power when traction demands it, rather than running a mechanical rear driveshaft full-time.
Paddle shifters — standard across all four grades for 2027 — let drivers manually step through simulated gear stages, adding a layer of engagement that was missing from the previous setup.
Platinum Grade Gets the Performance Hardware It Deserves
The Hybrid MAX system in the Platinum grade is a fundamentally different animal. Its 2.4-liter turbocharged engine works alongside a direct-shift six-speed automatic — not a CVT — which means gear changes feel deliberate and the low-rpm torque hit from the electric motor is immediate. The 400 lb-ft figure arrives early in the rev range, which is exactly where a lifted sedan benefits from it most.
Full-Time Electronic AWD with an eAxle continuously splits power front and rear, rather than waiting for slip to engage the rear motor. Standard Adaptive Variable Suspension on Platinum adjusts damping across drive modes, including a Rear Comfort setting that prioritizes smoothness for rear passengers. Dynamic Rear Steering and Electronically Controlled Braking with Active Cornering Assist round out the chassis package.
Exterior Updates Add Gloss Black Accents and a New Paint Option
Every 2027 Crown gets a newly sculpted rear bumper that sharpens the silhouette, and HEV and AWD badges now wear a satin finish instead of the previous chrome treatment. A new color called Inked joins the palette alongside Oxygen White, Bronze Age, Heavy Metal, Finish Line Red, and Storm Cloud.
The Platinum grade’s bi-tone scheme has been revised: the trunk is now body-colored rather than black, so the contrast between the black roof and the painted lower body reads more intentionally. Platinum also adds a black belt window surround as standard. Nightshade, true to its name, picks up black badge overlays for 2027.
Inside, the Limited grade gains full Saddle Tan seating, and Platinum adds Saddle Tan as an option — both now available paired with the Bronze Age exterior color.
Limited Grade Gets a Meaningful Tech Upgrade as Standard Equipment
The Limited grade adds three features as standard for 2027: a Panoramic View Monitor, Traffic Jam Assist capability (which requires an active Drive Connect subscription), and Digital Key capability via Remote Connect. These were previously reserved for higher trims or optional packages, and their inclusion at the Limited level raises the grade’s value proposition considerably.
All four grades carry Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 as standard, covering Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, and Automatic High Beams. The 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster are also standard across the lineup. Limited, Nightshade, and Platinum grades include the 11-speaker JBL Premium Audio system.
The 2027 Toyota Crown is built at the Tsutsumi Plant in Japan. Toyota has not yet published final pricing alongside this announcement.
