Chattanooga, TN – Volkswagen of America celebrated the recent start of assembly of the all-new 2027 Atlas family yesterday at its Chattanooga plant, a key milestone for the brand’s U.S. operations. Local government officials, community stakeholders, and Volkswagen leadership joined on-site to commemorate the moment and sign a commemorative Atlas hood. Since its introduction to the Chattanooga assembly line in December 2016, the Volkswagen Atlas has become a defining chapter in the history of Volkswagen Chattanooga. Designed specifically for the North American market, the three-row SUV prompted an initial $900 million expansion of the Chattanooga plant and marked Volkswagen’s commitment to assembling vehicles tailored to American families. Atlas has since come to be a major driver of the Volkswagen brand’s identity in the American market. Since the first Atlas rolled off the assembly line, Chattanooga has assembled more than one million Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles, helping establish the nameplate as one of Volkswagen’s best-selling nameplates in the United States and reinforcing the Tennessee plant’s role as a cornerstone of the company’s North American growth strategy.

‘Starting assembly of the all-new 2027 Atlas is an exciting milestone for our Chattanooga team,’ said Henning Habicht, Head of Volkswagen Chattanooga Operations. ‘This achievement reflects the skill, dedication, and commitment of our workforce, whose craftsmanship and attention to detail are at the heart of every vehicle we assemble.’

This all new 2027 Atlas builds on the success of the original with a bolder design, smarter tech, and premium features where they matter most. Powered by a 2.0-liter EA888 evo5 turbocharged engine producing 282 horsepower, the model delivers the highest output in the nameplate’s history while improving efficiency compared with the previous generation.

Every Atlas that rolls off the assembly line represents the skill, dedication, and pride of the people who assemble it. Today, more than 4,000 employees power operations in Chattanooga combining advanced assembly expertise with a commitment to quality to bring each vehicle to life. Their craftsmanship, innovation, and teamwork are not only driving the success of the Atlas, but also strengthening Volkswagen’s long-term investment in American manufacturing and the Chattanooga community.
