LS this, LS that. We’ve been hearing it for the better part of 30 years now. Something to the tune of “it’s the most versatile, best bang-for-the-buck performance monster to ever bear eight cylinders in a V formation.” On the whole, that line of thinking isn’t wrong, but it does feel a little bit long in the tooth, doesn’t it? After three decades, there has to be some kind of novel alternative that isn’t a Hemi or a Coyote motor. DIY engine builders be darned, the turn-key aftermarket has a solution, and not one that comes ripped out of a junkyard. In fact, it comes shipped to your front door in a wooden crate.
For so long, the simple formula for the typical DIY LS engine swap was straightforward. You’d start by spending a weekend combing junkyards for LS-toting Chevrolet Silverado pickups, Tahoe SUVs, and Express Vans until you found a rusty old iron block just well-preserved enough to bring back to life. Then you’d rip it out, bring it home, and strip it down to the block until all that was left was bare iron, and your imagination. From there, a robust, billion-dollar cottage industry developed, dedicated exclusively to turning old LS blocks into something that could turn a restomod into a supercar-fighting monster.
Want forced induction, a stroker kit, plus a beefier crank and con-rods? Well, roughly a dozen different companies from all across America sell roughly the same conversion kits and associated hardware. Honestly, a dozen is probably undercutting the real number a good deal. The point? It’s easier to build a thousand-horsepower screamer from an LS block than it is to restore some other V8s to factory condition. The level of support for the architecture is simply staggering, and you can tailor the power figures to your exact specifications without much hassle.
The trouble is, that seemingly endless supply of junkyard LS motors isn’t quite as limitless as people made it out to be. Eventually, possibly some day soon, those stockpiles will start to wane. When they do, we’ll need some form of viable replacement to keep the drag pulls rolling for another 30 years or so. Happily, at least one outlet is offering one path forward that makes logical sense.
Say hello to Brian Tooley Racing, based out of Bardstown, Kentucky. BTR, as we’ll call it on and off, does far more than supply performance parts for the full range of LS blocks. Of course, that’s what drove them to industry-wide fame. Everything from cam kits to intake manifold packages and full bottom-end rebuild sets are readily available, developed in-house by teams of skilled engineers, save for bigger items like engine blocks and crankshafts. Using durable, high-quality materials like billet steel and aluminum in its forged internals, BTR is one of a few online shops in America that lets you buy nearly everything you need for an engine build in one place.
Out of an aerospace-grade machine shop with a staggering 45,000 square feet of space to work with, BTR does nearly all its work in a facility so vast it could nearly accommodate an entire automaker if it wanted to. Even if the blocks they offer aren’t cast on site, the bare block doesn’t leave the facility looking anything like how it did when it entered. Each example is machined down to microscopic tolerances, ensuring the hardware they fabricate on the premises pairs perfectly with rotating assemblies they source from elsewhere.
BTR is one of the few shops on the planet capable of supplying a crate block strong enough, and more importantly, priced reasonably enough, for DIY restomodders to consider using them instead of fashioning something themselves from scrapyard parts. Still, that kind of end goal is a tall order, even for the best in the business. That’s why what they came up with is so astonishing, because arguably, they’ve actually pulled it off.
It’d be easy to say that BTR’s new line of souped-up GM V8s are mere LT short blocks mildly breathed on with existing hardware like Lego blocks. Yet, that would be doing them a great disservice, and the truth is far more interesting. They do start with bare LT castings, but the fun starts before a single component is installed. Each bare block is painstakingly CNC-machined and reinforced to be more precise and to accept more boost than anything GM casts from the factory. The cylinder bores are perfectly round and smooth, the top deck is perfectly flat, and internal clearances are so tight and precise, it’d probably make NASA jealous.
Based on the LT1 architecture that underpins the C7 Corvette Stingray, the resulting 376-cubic-inch, or 6.2-liter short block is rated for a bare minimum of 1,000 horsepower with plenty of room to spare. Sporting a forged steel crankshaft from an LSA motor, BTR H-Beam con-rods, and CP Bullet pistons, you’re liable to make Bugatti Veyron levels of horsepower before you’ve even hit the lower limit of what this block’s capable of. You won’t even need insane levels of boost pressure to make that level of power achievable, but if you want more, you could always upgrade to a more capable 416-cubic-inch LT1 variant, complete with a Callies Compstar crank.
If that seems insufficient, and you’d have to be out of your mind to think so, BTR will happily sell you a worked-up variant of the 6.6-liter L8T V8, the same one you’d find in Silverado trucks and Express cargo vans. With an iron block and forged everything, the bare minimum this short block can accommodate is 1,500 horsepower. At the high end, well, let’s just say you’re going to need a longer drag strip. It makes the old LS seem a bit old fashioned if we’re honest, and if you’ve got convenience in mind instead of out-and-out DIY flexing, there’s an argument to be made that the BTR route is preferable. Of course, it’ll come at a cost, no less than the cost of an entire used car most likely. Still, that’s money well spent if all you care about is going quickly.
Say what you will about a BTR crate block. They’re convenient, ready to assemble, and they don’t involve sweating your rear end off in a muggy junkyard, covered in oil and lord knows what else while you swear your way through an engine removal. For some people, that’s half the fun of the restomodding process. It’s exactly because the process is so fraught with challenges and is such a dirty ordeal that the end result is all the sweeter. There’s a sense of achievement when you strip a junked LS down to the block and build it back up like the proverbial phoenix. It’s a paradigm that no crate short block, no matter how incredible, can ever replicate.
That’s why, in the near future, don’t be surprised if a BTR-engined drag car lines up right next to a DIY resto drag car that someone spent a year or more breaking down and building up in their shed. Such is the duality of restomodding. Sometimes it just works out that way. In 2026, it’s simply great to have options one way or another. The more the merrier, we say, especially when the alternative is some humdrum EV that runs sub-ten quarter miles, ostensibly by cheating.
