Touring motorcycles are the flag bearers of comfort, convenience, and relaxation. Traditional tourers, most of which are based on V-twin cruiser bikes, have often been the go-to motorcycles for the ultimate relaxed riding experience. Tried-and-tested underpinnings, torquey engines, and no-compromise comfort and convenience features contribute to that reputation.

However, these features also have a negative impact, adding heft, size, and sluggish riding dynamics. Addressing these shortcomings without compromising traditional values, modern touring bikes fuse traditional cues with bleeding-edge underpinnings and technology. Honda seems to have nailed this fusion with its flagship luxury tourer.

Here’s Why Tourers Are The Most Relaxing Motorcycles

Traditional Tourers Edge Over The Rest

Tourers are the most comfortable and relaxing motorcycle types because they prioritize comfort and luxury. These factors are best taken care of by low-slung traditional cruiser-based tourers with a laid-back rider triangle, ample seating space, and well-contoured wind protection. Luggage solutions are baked right in, and the pillion also gets additional back support thanks to standard top boxes. Then there’s the combination of low-revving yet torquey engines and heavy-duty underpinnings that aid in breezy triple-digit highway runs.

Motorcycle makers leave no stone unturned in delivering the highest levels of comfort, convenience, and wind protection for a cocooned riding experience. However, as mentioned earlier, traditional tourers offer this at the expense of added weight and sluggish riding dynamics. This limits where you can enjoy these land yachts. To overcome this issue, we have modern tourers that stand out.

But There Are Bleeding-Edge Exceptions That Are Superior With Technology

There are modern, tech-loaded touring-bike exceptions that stand out for fusing traditional tourer strengths with advanced underpinnings and technology, making them more capable off the open highway. BMW and Honda lead this pack. The German marque has made its point with the K 1600 lineup, and the Grand America is the pinnacle of uncompromised comfort and luxury.

It has the only inline-six engine on a motorcycle, packs dynamic underpinnings, and is loaded with technology features to translate into a luxurious land yacht on two wheels. However, all of this comes at $34,070, to be precise. But its arch-rival Honda surprises with comparable packaging at an impressive price under $30,000. In fact, the Gold Wing Tour is also the only touring motorcycle with an automatic transmission for just over $30,000.

The standard Honda Gold Wing Tour is the most value-packed modern full-dresser, priced at $29,500. Further aligning its value proposition is the DCT-equipped Gold Wing Tour, priced at $30,500. The DCT gearbox is also one of the core features that help make the Gold Wing Tour the most relaxing motorcycle on the market today.

Furthermore, it fits like a glove for comfortable cross-country riding. A long wheelbase, lavish seating space, relaxed rider triangle, ample wind protection, an adaptive and unique chassis layout, and a huge engine tuned for relaxed highway runs help this legendary Honda stay on top of its game. Furthermore, it has a sporty side thanks to an innovative suspension setup that shortens the wheelbase, making this “land yacht” nimble.

Honda has been refining the boxer engine layout for over half a century now. It started with a flat-four on the earliest Gold Wings and evolved into a flat-six that has been the heart of the Gold Wing ever since. The 2026 Gold Wing’s 1,833 cc flat-six engine is a modern evolution of a 1,520 cc six-cylinder engine introduced in 1987.

The current-gen flat-six has a squared layout with identical bore and stroke and a compression ratio of 10.5:1. These features help the Gold Wing stay calm and composed while packing some serious punch for long stretches of tarmac. It produces 124.7 horsepower at 5,500 RPM and 125.3 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 RPM. The base Gold Wing sends power to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual gearbox.

A Seven-Speed Automatic Transmission Makes It More Relaxed Than Any Other Tourer

But the riding experience gets a lot more interesting with the only seven-speed automatic DCT transmission on a production motorcycle. This also makes the Honda Gold Wing the most affordable touring bike with a true automatic transmission. This gearbox eliminates the need for manual clutch engagement and offers a simplified scooter-like twist-and-go riding experience. Honda has been refining its automatic transmission for many years, so the Gold Wing’s drivetrain adjusts shift points based on riding style. It also gets a Manual mode that uses tiny paddle shifters integrated into the handlebar to provide greater rider engagement.

Unique Underpinnings That Give It A Surprising Sporty Side

The Honda Gold Wing is underpinned by a unique die-cast aluminum frame designed to balance weight and rigidity. The huge, heavy flat-six engine is also used as a stressed member for the same purpose. Its suspension setup is equally unique. The Gold Wing gets a double-wishbone setup at the front with 4.3 inches of travel. The rear gets a Pro-Link monoshock with 4.1 inches of travel, mounted onto a single-sided swingarm.

The front suspension setup provides separate steering and suspension functions. This is superior to a traditional fork setup, with reduced brake dive and improved stability. This also shortens the wheelbase, allowing the rider to sit closer to the front wheel despite a huge six-cylinder engine between them.

All of these features come into play, helping the Gold Wing showcase a surprisingly sporty side while delivering elevated stability on curvy roads and high-speed straights. Braking duties are taken care of by dual 320 mm discs up front and a single 316 mm disc at the rear. Grip is courtesy of chunky 130-section front and 200-section rear tubeless tires wrapped around 18-inch front and 16-inch rear alloy wheels.

Elevated Touring Comfort With Relaxed Ergonomics And Functional Styling

Inspired by the low-slung traditional tourers, the Gold Wing has a low and accessible seat height of 29.3 inches. Furthermore, the rider sits relaxed, with slightly forward-set footpegs and a tall, wide handlebar. The pillion is given due importance, with comfort and luxury, as they get a well-padded seat and standard back and armrests, courtesy of a large top box.

Adding more comfort and relaxation on the highway is the Gold Wing’s functional styling setup. Honda has managed to offer ample wind protection for the body and legs without sacrificing aesthetics. The design language is sharp and muscular thanks to a busy front section. The front fairing houses a large headlamp assembly and an integrated, electronically adjustable windscreen that provides solid wind deflection.

The lower fairings are designed to deflect wind away from the rider’s legs. Wind flow is also directed along two radiators to help with engine cooling. Another example of functional styling is the neat integration of auxiliary lights into dedicated slots down low, in front of the engine heads.

Honda has also neatly integrated a lavish luggage solution comprising side cases and a top box into the sharp yet muscular design. With a total storage capacity of 32 gallons, this luxury tourer has enough space to store two people’s worth of weekend luggage. Remote locking and unlocking add to its convenience.

Top-Spec Technology Seals The Deal

There is no dearth of cool touring-focused technology on the Gold Wing. The cockpit is adorned with a huge 7-inch TFT flanked by two old-school analog dials and two tiny additional LCDs. The top-spec central TFT helps dial up features with wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and HomeLink.

It also offers superior navigation features, such as a gyrocompass, to maintain uninterrupted map support, even when passing through tunnels with no reception. Other features helping elevate the Gold Wing’s relaxing appeal include heated grips, keyless entry, cruise control, and standard 55W speakers integrated into the front fairings. Ride quality and safety are further enhanced by features such as four ride modes (Sport, Econ, Rain, and Tour), Hill Start Assist, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, and Honda Selectable Torque Control.

Rivals Are Still Playing Catch-Up With The Honda Gold Wing Tour

Not only does the Honda Gold Wing excel at being a relaxing motorcycle, but it is also a value-packed offering. Despite being a luxury tourer priced over $30,000, it manages to highlight its bang-for-buck appeal thanks to features like an automatic transmission and a double-wishbone suspension setup. Even its closest rival, the $34,070 BMW K 1600 Grand America, struggles to hold its ground, as many of the Honda’s standard features come as optional extras on the Beamer, which notably raises the price.

Furthermore, it doesn’t even get an automatic transmission as an option. Other rivals include the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Limited, the Indian Roadmaster, and the Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager. But none quite matches the all-around appeal of luxury, comfort, convenience, technology, and relaxation that the Honda Gold Wing offers.
