What is more impressive than power? Consistency. A recent long-term review of a luxury SUV demonstrated that it lost virtually no performance after 40,000 miles of use, managing a five-second zero-to-60 mph run at the end of the test. Not only that, it retained its performance while requiring no significant mechanical repairs during that time period. BMW and Mercedes have dominated the performance luxury SUV segment for years, but a Korean challenger is proving that the gap is closing by the minute. Not only is this rival SUV proving remarkably reliable, but the brand also backs its product with one of the strongest warranty packages in the industry. That Korean brand is none other than Genesis.

German SUVs Dominate The Performance Luxury Formula

For decades, if you wanted a luxury SUV that also had sports-car qualities, your best options strictly carried German badges. But that reputation becomes harder to defend when the cost of keeping one on the road starts becoming part of the equation.

Why BMW And Mercedes Remain Relevant

The allure of compact German SUVs like the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC is undeniable: strong AWD performance, premium comfort, and established badge prestige. The undeniable tradeoff is that the ownership proposition can involve higher upkeep costs in exchange for that premium experience. If you have the cash, you can’t beat the feeling of German performance in a luxury SUV. While being expensive to maintain doesn’t automatically make something unreliable, it certainly affects the economics of long-term ownership. At the end of the day, this is a pay-to-play game.

How Warranty Terms Change The Entire Calculation

If you were to buy a brand-new 2026 BMW X3 right now, it would come with a new-vehicle limited warranty of four years or 50,000 miles, alongside three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance. That’s honestly solid coverage, but what if we told you there was another luxury SUV that offered 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage, five-year/60,000-mile basic coverage, and three years/36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance?

That’s right, Genesis is the outlier in this segment that takes a firm stance behind its products and offers one of the strongest coverage packages available right now. Of all the luxury brands that could give you a true performance SUV, the Genesis GV70 currently carries one of the most compelling long-term ownership propositions on the market.

The Overlooked Genesis GV70 Is A Worthy Rival

The Genesis GV70 is more than a newcomer with an impressive warranty on paper because several independent long-term tests have already subjected it to the kind of mileage that exposes expensive mechanical weaknesses. The strongest evidence comes from a 40,000-mile evaluation where its twin-turbo V-6 remained remarkably close to its original performance at the end of the test.

A recent Car and Driver 40,000-mile long-term test with the Genesis GV70 proved that the gap between Korean and German performance luxury SUVs is closing. Throughout the entire testing cycle, which lasted over a year, the GV70 was driven roughly three times the average annual mileage. During this time, not a single necessary out-of-pocket expense occurred outside of a $49 front wiper blade replacement, and everything went smoothly according to its routine service intervals. Services included oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements, all performed within the recommended intervals.

Impressively, the 375-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 powering the GV70 still produced a five-second zero-to-60 mph time after 40,000 miles, down from an initial 4.6-second time. Most of that performance loss can be attributed to steadily increasing tire wear, as evidenced by the initial 13.3-second quarter-mile time at 104 mph only slipping by 0.3 seconds by the end of the testing period. The GV70 delivers performance comparable to a 2026 BMW X3 M50 xDrive, and its capability does not deteriorate despite substantial mileage accumulated in an unusually short timeframe.

Other Long-Term Tests Corroborate The Results

MotorTrend also conducted a similar test, putting more than 20,000 miles on a 2022 GV70 3.5T Sport Prestige. Their final thoughts were positive, calling it “an exemplary chariot,” but of course, the Genesis SUV was not perfect. The GV70 did not suffer from any major powertrain-related issues, but MotorTrend did note an intermittent problem where the rear doors wouldn’t automatically unlock when the vehicle was turned off, along with a cracked sunroof that required replacement. Another criticism was fuel economy, which averaged under 20 mpg combined despite the EPA-rated 21 mpg combined figure.

Both TopGear and Chasing Cars echoed the same basic findings about the GV70 during their long-term reviews. Neither experienced a major mechanical failure, and both praised the performance, interior quality, and overall comfort provided by the GV70. The SUV’s primary criticism across these publications is that the V-6 engine is particularly thirsty, so if you are hoping for a fuel-efficient SUV, it simply isn’t. These tests support a strong mechanical reliability case, but that alone does not mean every owner will end up having the same experience.

Genesis Gives Long-Term Owners Something German Rivals Can’t Match

The GV70’s strongest advantage may ultimately have less to do with its outright performance and more with what happens five-plus years into ownership. Genesis has paired the SUV’s encouraging durability record with one of the strongest warranty packages in the luxury segment, designed to make long-term ownership considerably less intimidating.

The 10-Year Warranty Turns Reliability Into A Financial Advantage

Look across the automotive market, and you will be hard-pressed to find better warranty coverage than what Hyundai and Genesis provide. A 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is essentially unheard of in the industry outside of Hyundai and Kia, giving Genesis an unusual advantage for buyers who intend to keep their vehicles for the long haul.

Most modern luxury vehicles are designed around relatively short ownership cycles, where consumers move on to the next model before the most expensive components ever have a chance to age significantly. Genesis is effectively pushing back against that philosophy by providing warranty coverage that gives shoppers greater confidence in keeping their vehicle long-term. Of course, things can still break, as they can with any car, but knowing that some of the most expensive components are protected can make ownership considerably less stressful. You will still want some kind of contingency fund, but the potential financial exposure to major powertrain repairs is significantly reduced.

Three Years Of Maintenance Makes The Ownership Math Even Better

To sweeten the deal even further, Genesis also provides three years/36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance. The Korean luxury brand understands that the best ownership experience is predictable, not necessarily risk-free. With this additional coverage, buyers can have their scheduled maintenance performed through the factory-backed dealer network without having to worry about those routine expenses during the initial ownership period.

You may still spend money on consumables such as tires, particularly if you drive the GV70 harder than the average owner, but that’s true of virtually any performance-oriented SUV. In the end, the proposition is difficult to ignore. You are getting comparable levels of luxury and performance to a German equivalent while reducing some of the financial uncertainty commonly associated with long-term luxury-vehicle ownership.

The GV70 Has A Lot To Offer, But Is Not Perfect

The long-term testing paints an unusually positive picture, but the 2026 GV70 shouldn’t be declared bulletproof based on a limited set of fleet data alone. Owner-survey data introduces a legitimate counterpoint, while the SUV’s fuel consumption remains one of the clearest compromises buyers must accept.

Consumer Reports And Other Data Provide A Clearer Reliability Picture

While most of the GV70’s long-term coverage is positive, Consumer Reports specifically calls the 2024 GV70 “less reliable than other cars from the same model year.” The most common complaints relate to faulty fuel injectors that can lead to misfires and check-engine lights, infotainment screens going blank, over-the-air software updates failing, and random interior squeaks and creaks. While none or any of these problems may occur with your GV70, the discrepancy between owner-survey data and automotive-media fleet testing provides a more nuanced picture of the SUV’s reliability.

Vinitel data shows 33.7 complaints per 10,000 2023 GV70s sold in the U.S., which represents a relatively low complaint rate, while the 2022 model recorded 70.5 complaints per 10,000 vehicles sold, considered an average defect rate. Vinitel also identifies fuel-system problems as the most common complaint, with 44 occurrences, which broadly corroborates Consumer Reports’ findings. According to NHTSA data, the 2024 GV70 recorded 17 complaints and two recalls, while the 2022 model had the highest number of complaints at 91, along with five recalls.

The important takeaway is that the GV70 appears to have a strong mechanical track record, but the evidence doesn’t justify calling it flawless. The long-term fleet tests demonstrate impressive durability, while owner-survey and complaint data suggest that smaller electrical, software, fuel-system, and interior issues can still surface.

The Twin-Turbo V-6 Still Has A Price To Pay At The Pump

As mentioned earlier, if the GV70 3.5T has an obvious downside, it would be its lackluster fuel economy. According to multiple long-term reports, if you can achieve around 20 mpg combined, you’re doing pretty well. Yet how much of that is explained by the fact that the twin-turbo V-6’s acceleration is downright addictive? Of course, you won’t always be driving it hard, but Sport+ exists for a reason.

If you still enjoy the GV70 but fuel economy is a priority, the 2.5T model provides solid performance while delivering better fuel economy of around 23 to 24 mpg combined when equipped with the 19-inch wheels. With the 21-inch wheels found on the Sport Prestige trim, expect that figure to drop to around 22 mpg combined. Either way, the GV70 provides a compelling argument for buyers looking for an ideal blend of performance, luxury, and long-term ownership confidence.
