By the beginning of the decade, adventure bikes had grown in size, weight, and displacement to such an extent that they became difficult to use off-road. This wasn’t just a case of novice riders getting on the wrong bike; even experienced adventure riders were quickly discovering their limitations off-road. It came as no surprise that riders started moving to middleweight bikes, which offered a superior balance between off-road capability and touring comfort.

While the middleweight segment offers experienced riders a means to get out and explore with confidence, they are still pretty heavy in an off-road setting. All the while, entry-level bikes have been getting better and better, with the likes of the KTM 390 Adventure R and the CFMoto Ibex 450 offering riders of any level genuinely competent all-rounders. While down on power compared to the middleweight crowd, these bikes can still maintain highway speed without a fuss, and are comfortable enough to ride long distances.

Kawasaki has been leaving money on the table for a while now by going without a proper adventure bike. The Versys-X 300 was the closest we got for the last decade or so, but even that is more of an adventure touring bike. Customers looking for a more off-road-oriented model were pointed toward the capable but sluggish KLR650 dual-sport. So to say the KLE500 was a highly anticipated model would be something of an understatement. As is the case with most “highly anticipated” models, it fell short of expectations, at least in some respects. But, it is still an incredibly versatile machine that offers a lot of value to the right buyer.

The KLE500 Has A Tried And True Parallel-Twin

Like most adventure bikes, the KLE makes use of a versatile parallel-twin that already goes into several other models. It is, in most respects, a motorcycle built around an engine. It is also pretty easy to see why Kawasaki likes this particular engine for the ADV. With around 50 horsepower and decent midrange performance, it is accessible enough for new riders yet engaging enough for more experienced riders, especially off-road.

Some Issues With Packaging

Getting this street-bike engine to work off-road was always going to pose a few challenges. Packaging for a motorcycle, where space is so limited, is a massive headache at the best of times. Even more so when it comes to designing a bike that needs to work both on- and off-road. It is relatively clear that to achieve the right weight distribution (in an effort to improve handling), the engine was situated relatively low in the chassis, which is not ideal for a bike that is supposed to perform off-road.

The KLE500 Is More Capable Than You Might Think

With a mere 7.3 inches of ground clearance, pretty much everything good about the bike was almost immediately forgotten, and this became the focal point. To put this into perspective, even the Versys-X 300 has seven inches of ground clearance with its 19-inch front wheel. Real-world tests soon revealed just how easily the bike bottoms out, which makes sense, seeing as it has more suspension travel than ground clearance.

In reality, this was never supposed to be a real threat to the established off-road-oriented bikes. It was always meant to be more of an all-rounder, capable of accumulating thousands of trouble-free miles in relative comfort. The ground clearance could have easily been improved, but that would have resulted in a taller seat height. Its seat height of 34.3 inches is reasonable for an ADV, but anything more than this would make it somewhat less accessible.

The KLE500 actually gets a fairly sporty chassis, and has some of the best road manners in its class. While long travel suspension never works particularly well under hard braking, the bike has a balance and poise about it. It offers reasonable wind protection (more reasonable on the SE model) and is comfortable enough to ride several hours at a time. In terms of features, the base model gets switchable ABS, and an LCD dash. The SE model adds a couple of attractive colorways, a more robust skid plate, metal-reinforced handguards, and a TFT dash. Our pick would be the base model; save the money for a better aftermarket skid plate, because if you are going off-road, you are going to need it.​​​​​​​

While adventure bikes have been around as a concept for over 40 years, they are still largely misunderstood. ADVs are primarily street bikes that offer us the flexibility to go off-road when the mood arises. If you are after an off-road bike that can be ridden on the street, there are several dual-sport bikes on the market that will be a better fit. The KLE500 is arguably one of the most well-rounded motorcycles on the market. It certainly can be ridden off-road, but it is an even better street bike that can handle the daily commute as well as long-distance travel. While it certainly isn’t a “unicorn,” that is not what Kawasaki promised. For those who know what they want and understand its limitations, this is a great bike for the price.​​​​​​​
