The JDM Coupe That Matched A Ferrari 360 Around The Nürburgring On 276 HP

A Japanese coupe rated at 276 horsepower lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:56.73. Two years later, Ferrari’s 425-hp, track-built 360 Challenge Stradale was timed at 7:56 around the same circuit.

Today’s mid-engine hybrid supercars make between 671 hp and 819 hp, and the lightest of them weighs 3,075 lbs dry. Every one of them is far quicker than either of those cars, and not one of them drives like them.

The gap between those two facts is the whole story here, and horsepower explains almost none of it.

Hybrid Supercars Keep Adding Horsepower To Hide Their Weight

Ferrari’s 296 GTB makes 819 hp from a twin-turbo V6 and an electric motor, and it weighs 3,241 pounds dry. That figure leaves out fluids, so a road-ready car sits meaningfully higher than the brochure suggests.

McLaren’s Artura is the lightweight of the class at 3,075 pounds dry, with 671 hp from a similar hybrid V6 layout. It carries a carbon fiber monocoque specifically to keep that number down, and it is still no featherweight.

Honda’s own successor gained the most of any car here. The second-generation NSX arrived with 573 hp and a curb weight of 3,803 pounds, which climbed to 3,878 lbs for 2019 and stayed there through the end of production.

Battery packs, motors, inverters, modern crash structures, and driver-assist hardware all add mass, and the industry’s standard answer to added mass is added power. Each generation gets heavier, then gets more horsepower to cover the difference.

Steering assistance, throttle mapping, brake blending between friction and regeneration, and stability software now sit between the driver’s hands and the road. The car still responds instantly, but it responds through a translator, and that translation is what buyers in this class have quietly given up.

One JDM sports car solved the same problem thirty years ago by going in the exact opposite direction.

The Honda NSX-R set that 7:56.73 lap in 2002 with a 3.2-liter V6 rated at 276 hp at 7,300 rpm and 224 lb-ft at 5,300 rpm. Curb weight was 2,799 pounds. The lap was recorded for a Best Motoring video special, with the timer running on screen for the full circuit.

A standard 2002 NSX weighed 3,153 pounds, so the R carried roughly 354 lbs less than the car it was based on. On paper, it made no more power than that standard car.

Two separate cars wear the NSX-R badge, and most retellings blur them together. The first, built on the NA1 chassis from 1992 to 1995, used a 3.0-liter V6, and Honda made 483 of them. The second arrived on the facelifted NA2 chassis in 2002 with the larger engine, and Honda’s own figures put production at around 140 cars.

The Nürburgring time belongs to the later NA2. The earlier NA1 R was timed at 8:03.86 on the same circuit, which is still quick for a 1990s Honda but is not the lap in question.

Both cars were sold only in Japan, which explains the 276 hp figure. The Japanese Gentlemen’s Agreement restricted manufacturers to a voluntary 280 PS (276 hp) ceiling at the time. American buyers of the standard NA2 saw a 290 hp rating for the same engine.

Sport Auto recorded the 360 Challenge Stradale at 7:56 in 2004, a separate test on a separate day in separate conditions. The two times sit within a second of each other, but they were never a head-to-head, and the honest word is matched rather than beaten.

The Challenge Stradale still brought roughly 150 more horsepower, carbon-ceramic brakes borrowed from the Enzo, and a factory brief that assumed 20 percent track use. Honda reached the same lap time by taking parts off a road car.

The carbon fiber hood saved 4.9 pounds, and the hollow carbon rear wing saved another 2.9 pounds. The instrument panel gave up 1.4 pounds, thinner rear glass 0.4 pounds, and the mesh chosen for the shift boot saved 10 grams, which is about a third of an ounce. Honda counted that last one and printed it.

Power steering, air conditioning, the stereo, sound deadening, traction control, central locking, powered mirrors, and the chassis undercoating were all deleted. A smaller battery went in, along with lightweight carpet, forged aluminum wheels, carbon-Kevlar Recaro shells, and a titanium shift knob.

Each piston and connecting rod was balanced to half the tolerance Honda allowed on a standard NSX engine. The clutch, flywheel, and pulley assembly were machined by hand, and rotating weight tolerance was cut to under a tenth of the standard engine’s. Honda claimed no extra power from any of it, only sharper response.

Cars have been known to measure close to 300 hp in practice, though that is observed output rather than a factory claim. The 276 hp rating was a ceiling the industry agreed to, not a limit the engine struggled to reach.

A final drive 4.1 percent shorter than standard improved acceleration at the cost of top speed. Stiffer springs, Showa dampers, hollow anti-roll bars, and firmer bushings went in alongside a stiffer bodyshell, and Honda tuned the aerodynamics for negative lift rather than a headline downforce number.

Shigeru Uehara, the executive chief engineer, said his team spent many hours arriving at “the purest, most balanced definition of a sports car.” He added that even a slight change to spoiler angle, anti-roll bar diameter, or bushing rigidity would move the car away from what a Type R is supposed to be.

The standard NSX was built to a brief no supercar maker had attempted: Ferrari-level pace with Honda reliability, genuine all-around visibility, working air conditioning, and usable luggage space. That brief is the reason a platform worth stripping existed at all.

Ayrton Senna tested a prototype during development and told the engineers the chassis was not rigid enough. Honda responded with a substantial stiffness increase before production began, and the aluminum semi-monocoque that resulted became the car’s defining asset.

Gordon Murray drove an NSX prototype at Honda’s Tochigi test course in the late 1980s, and the car became his benchmark for the McLaren F1. He later wrote that the Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini references he had been using vanished from his mind, and that the NSX’s ride quality and handling became his new design target.

A major service on a pre-360 Ferrari required pulling the engine out of the car to reach the timing belts, a job that still runs into five figures at a specialist. The NSX asked for nothing of the kind, and its service schedule looked much like the rest of Honda’s range.

Every car was hand-assembled at Tochigi, and the durability shows in the survivors. First-generation NSXs are still on the road with well over 200,000 miles, which is not something period Ferrari rivals can often claim. The lap time lands differently because of all that. It came from a car you could drive to work on Monday.

No Hybrid Supercar Today Would Survive The NSX-R Treatment

The Artura, the lightest car in this class, is 276 pounds heavier than an NSX-R from 2002. That comparison sets the McLaren’s dry weight against the Honda’s curb weight, so the real difference is larger still.

Modern hybrids won a great deal in exchange, and they are quicker in every measurable way. They work in the rain, they have air conditioning, and they can be driven daily without the compromises the R deliberately accepted.

Unassisted steering, an engine that answers without a hybrid system arbitrating, and behavior that comes from geometry and mass rather than a control map are the things that went missing. No current mid-engine hybrid offers them at any price.

A 2003 NSX-R sold at Villa d’Este in 2025 for roughly $1.1 million, and the highest recorded sale for a first-generation car is $632,000. The market has already returned its verdict on which approach aged better.

The open question is whether anyone building a 296 GTB or an Artura today would have the nerve to delete instead of add.
