Japanese car manufacturers, like Toyota, Honda, and Subaru, are known for offering some of the most reliable cars across segments. These are the kind of cars you buy when you want something that will keep running for years to come with minimal running costs. But if you want this Japanese dependability with an electric vehicle that offers a good driving range, you don’t have many options.
As good as Japanese manufacturers may be, they still haven’t caught up to the competition in the EV segment. And this segment is where driving range matters the most; range anxiety is still a thing, and EV adopters want something that can drive for hundreds of miles between chargers. Fortunately, there’s one Japanese SUV that offers over 300 miles of driving range, and it’s from a manufacturer known for producing the most reliable cars.
High Range With Japanese Reliability Is Rarer Than You’d Think

When you want to buy an electric vehicle in the US, especially the kind with a really high driving range, your first pick wouldn’t typically be from a Japanese manufacturer. American brands, like Tesla, Rivian, or even Ford, along with their Korean rivals, Kia and Hyundai, are the ones you’d think of. These manufacturers produce BEVs with some of the highest driving ranges on the market. Some excellent examples include the Lucid Air, Mercedes EQS, Tesla Model S, etc.
On the other hand, Japanese manufacturers seem to still be catching up to the benchmark set by other manufacturers. Brands like Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, and Honda don’t offer too many EVs in the US to begin with, with only a few of them having a decent range to even consider. It’s easy to see why; American drivers like to drive long distances, whereas Japan is about the size of the whole East Coast. Japan doesn’t really need long-distance driving ranges the way American drivers do.

Still, what if you want an EV with a long driving range and Japanese reliability? After all, you can’t ignore the fact that Japanese manufacturers dominate reliability charts across the segments. Cars from Toyota and Honda, for instance, offer among the lowest ownership costs and a stress-free experience. Fortunately, there are a few Japanese EVs that have breached the 300-mile mark, with the one in question in this article being the benchmark for 2026.
The Toyota bZ Is The Japanese EV With The Highest Driving Range

Toyota’s first-ever mainstream electric vehicle in North America was the Toyota bZ4X, which was among the first vehicles to be built on Toyota’s e-TNGA modular platform designed for electric vehicles. Unfortunately for Toyota, the bZ4X was met with lukewarm reception on its launch, and it had more to do with what it offered and less with its weird name. It didn’t perform well enough in aspects that matter most to EV buyers: driving range, charging times, and interior comfort.
Toyota heard the feedback and went back to the drawing board to address these concerns, later giving a mid-cycle refresh to the bZ4X with a new, simplified name: the 2026 Toyota bZ. This Toyota EV is no longer lukewarm; it fixes most of the concerns of its predecessor, with plenty of upgrades. Our review even found the interiors to be much more intuitive. However, the biggest update the bZ brings over the bZ4X is in the battery department—swapping out the 72.8 kWh battery for a larger 74.7 kWh unit. This gives it a driving range of up to 314 miles.
It Offers 314 Miles Of Driving Range

While something like the Lucid Air may offer over 500 miles of driving range, for most people, 300 miles should be more than enough. And the Toyota bZ is the one that offers that better than any other Japanese rivals. Toyota claims an EPA estimated 314 miles of driving range for the XLE FWD Plus variant. Meanwhile, the base bZ is good for up to 236 miles, and the top-end FWD trim, Limited, offers 299 miles.

The bZ’s all-wheel-drive models trade in some of that range for better acceleration and traction on the road. Here, the XLE AWD trim offers up to 288 miles, and the top-end Limited AWD offers up to 278 miles. This is a solid jump from the bZ4X’s 228-mile all-wheel drive range, which is a huge improvement. For what the bZ is intended for (i.e., a compact SUV that will mostly be used for urban driving), this range should be more than enough, especially when you consider its better charging times now.
Not The Only Japanese EV With 300+ Mile Range

The Toyota bZ may be the Japanese EV with the highest driving range, but it has some very good Japanese competition in 2026. The two closest rivals in terms of EV driving distance are the Subaru Uncharted and Honda Prologue, with the Uncharted offering up to 300 miles of range. On the premium side of the segment, Lexus rules with the RZ, which offers up to 301 miles of range. The Nissan Leaf is a strong contender for those on a budget; it offers 303 miles and a starting price of $29,990, which makes it the most affordable Japanese EV on sale in the U.S.
The Engineering Behind The Toyota bZ’s Electric Powertrain

Another major update to the bZ, apart from its battery pack, is its electric motors. In other words, the bZ now produces a higher power output than the earlier bZ4X model. Toyota says the XLE FWD model produces 168 horsepower, while the XLE FWD Plus and Limited models produce 221 horsepower from a single motor. Stepping up to the all-wheel drive models unlocks 338 horsepower, thanks to two motors located at the front and rear. With this boost in power, the bZ can now rival the likes of the Volkswagen ID.4 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Decent Performance For The Real World

Depending on whether you pick FWD or AWD models, you can either get decent performance or more than enough for the roads. The front-wheel-drive models offer a 0 to 60 MPH time of around 7 to 8 seconds, which is about as average as it gets for cars today. That may not blow your mind, but it’s plenty for urban commutes. If you still want quicker acceleration, you’ll have to jump to the AWD models, which can sprint to 60 MPH in under five seconds—enough to keep most drivers entertained.
The bZ Also Charges Fairly Quickly

Compared to the bZ4X, which got a 7.6 kW charger, the bZ gets an upgraded 11 kW charger for faster home charging. The DC fast charging takes the bZ’s battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 30 minutes with the new battery preconditioning feature. While these numbers may not be a standout in the segment, they are at least competitive. The bZ also features a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, so you can plug it into Tesla’s Supercharger network without an adapter.
You’ll Save Up To $8,000 In Fuel Costs Over Five Years

If you’re moving from a gas-powered car to the bZ, you’re in for a lot of savings in the coming years. According to the EPA, the bZ offers up to 131 MPGe in combined driving conditions, which is drastically better than gas-powered cars, which hover around 25 MPG on average. As a result, you will spend around $550 to $650 annually on keeping the bZ charged up, which should add up to $7,500 to $8,000 in fuel savings over the first five years of ownership. So, not only does the bZ drive you the extra mile, but it can save you a lot of money along the way.
The Toyota bZ Is A Complete EV Package At $34,900 Starting

The Toyota bZ stands as a complete package now. One look at the bZ, and you can tell that it still retains the design characteristics of the older bZ4X but offers a much sleeker and refined design. The same principle follows on the inside, with the dashboard staying simple and minimalistic with a thoughtful choice of materials. In fact, the bZ is said to feel more comfortable and upscale than an average base model Corolla or a Camry.

Apart from fresher design both inside and out, the bZ also features plenty of tech goodies to keep modern drivers entertained, informed, and safe on the road. It now features a larger 7.0-inch driver information display and an upgraded center console infotainment screen. Toyota has also repositioned the driver display further back to improve visibility for drivers. Other features include Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia System, dual Qi wireless smartphone charging pads, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.

It’s still not perfect, though; it lacks a frunk, and its 400-volt architecture lags behind some of its rivals that use 800-volt systems. Still, it’s leaps ahead of what it used to be. Our review of the bZ found that the SUV is pleasant and easy to drive, with light but accurate steering, commendable body control, and zero powertrain noises. Add to that its up-to-314-mile range, and you have a complete EV package that should satisfy those looking for a competent Japanese EV with a long driving range.
