I don’t know the exact date when carmakers lost the plot on making their wares gorgeous. But I’d certainly peg it before Elon Musk decided that the love-child of a trash compactor and an office copy machine was the ideal design direction for the Cybertruck. Then look at an entirely different car, the Audi A6 that’s just been revamped. I’ve just spent a week behind the wheel, and I can say, without a doubt, it’s gorgeous both inside and out. And here’s why that still matters.

A Face That A Mother — And A Customer — Can Love

It’s really important to start here. Just stare at that image for a beat and note that this is a classically proportioned sedan. It has sharp, but not too-angular lines, with Audi emphasizing a powerful engine by cutting strafes across the hood. The “eye” slits of the headlamps squint with a bit of menace, and while the grille is still a bit large for my tastes, Audi has pared back its drop-jawed maw and widened the entire frame, which emphasizes the squat sportiness of the A6. The A6 looks like it means business. And, by the way, it backs that up with its performance.

Brawn Goes With The Beauty

I want to be clear about something: The 2026, $65,395 A6 would be far less attractive if this sixth-generation version didn’t also get a lot more power. The outgoing base A6 made 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The new 3.0-liter V-6 in the base car produces 362 horses and 406 pound-feet. This bests the base powerplants of both the BMW 530i ($61,950) and the Mercedes-Benz E350 ($65,150). Their base models each get 255 horsepower from their 2.0-liter fours, producing an identical 295 pound-feet of torque. And both of those cars are rear-wheel drive, not Quattro AWD.

Even though its six-cylinder engine makes the Audi a few hundred pounds heavier, it is the only one of the trio in base guise to have a 0-60 time in the four-second range (4.5). It takes 5.9 seconds for the BMW to get there, and 6.1 seconds for the Benz.

The Benz And BMW Aren’t Cheaper When You Add All-Wheel-Drive

You could argue that at least the BMW starts life marginally cheaper. But if you want AWD you’ll pay $64,250, so it’s barely a grand cheaper than the Audi. And the Benz E350 4MATIC will run you $67,650. And both of those still roll with the base 2.0-liter powerplants. To get the equivalent muscle from BMW, you’ll have to spring for the $69,150 BMW 540i xDrive with its 375-horsepower in-line six. And the $73,550 E450 Benz is a full eight grand pricier than the Audi and also has a 375-horsepower in-line six.

A Better Manu-Matic

Neither Mercedes-Benz nor BMW offer a dual-clutch transmission as Audi does. Both use slush-box torque converters. Sure, they get more gears (eight for the BMW and nine for the Benz), but the DCT in the Audi shifts exceptionally fluidly via the paddles that frame the steering wheel — and faster than any human being could manage in a true three-pedal car. This makes the A6 more engaging by far, simply because while you can “shift” those other German transmissions, only the Audi’s is designed around the driver being in control of gear changes. It’s also notable that this means you don’t have to fiddle with Audi’s Drive Select menu and force the A6 into Sport mode before using the paddles. You can downshift whenever the road throws a curve at you, or you need quicker acceleration or deceleration. The Ultimate Driving Machine cannot do this. But the A6 can.

Better Goodies, Gratis

A beautiful car needs to be beautiful on the inside, too, and it needs to come well-equipped. While its competitors charge more for heated and cooled seats, Audi gifts the A6 with them at the base level. The same goes for adaptive cruise control and clever, adjustable adaptive lighting that you can select based on your preference for the pattern. There’s also a photochromic

Roomy And Utile

Something lots of buyers seem to forget, because they haven’t owned sedans in so long, is that they’re comfortable for both passengers and drivers. The A6 isn’t unique in that regard — its peers in the segment, and that would include Genesis, too, make excellent-handling cars that are exceptionally enjoyable to ride in for hours. Partly, that’s just down to physics. When you sit lower, your head isn’t being jostled around as much when you hit a bump or go around a corner. Your body is literally part of a shorter lever, closer to the ground.

In the case of the Audi, you also have the roomiest rear row of these three German brands, and the 37.2 inches of rear legroom bests the Benz E-Class legroom by a full inch. This is also a very quiet car, with standard acoustic and front-door glass — something Mercedes charges $3,400 extra for as part of its Pinnacle Trim package.

Not All Rosy

That photochromic roof is quite impressive. You can adjust the pattern, as seen here, or make the lid entirely clear or totally opaque. I was driving on days that weren’t especially hot, but even with the lid in “shut” mode — meaning opaque — you could still feel heat penetrating from above. I live in New York State, not Dallas or Tampa, where the sun is much stronger, so I can only imagine how much harder the Audi’s air conditioning would have to work in those climates to keep up. Call me old-fashioned, but I’d prefer the option of either a proper sunroof or a fixed metal lid. BMW and Mercedes both offer a standard moonroof, meaning one that can be physically opened, while Audi doesn’t.

Not A Frugal Sipper

The Audi is also the least thrifty of these cars. Its combined EPA fuel economy is just 23 MPG. You can step across to the BMW 540i xDrive and get better horsepower (to reiterate, 362 for the Audi and 375 for the BMW) and still get 28 MPG from the latter. You might assume that buyers spending north of $60,000 don’t care about gas prices, but according to the EPA, you’ll spend an additional $500 annually on gasoline for the Audi vs. the 540i xDrive. That discrepancy grows to $750 annually if you get the less thirsty (but also, less powerful) 530i.

There’s another way to look at this. What will be timeless 20 years from now? And what cars do younger people think are cool? It’s not crossovers. Japanese stuff from the 1990s is hot among younger collectors, and they’re not eying the tall-riding blobs they were tethered to in their car seats. In that frame, you could then argue that the newest A6 and A5 are actually a little awkward, because they’re a lot bigger than they were several generations ago. Furthermore, you can see that barely 100,000 mid-size luxury sedans sold here last year. In contrast, the Lexus RX, all by its lonesome, surpassed the totality of the mid-size luxury sedan category.

Is the RX your icon of beauty? Does it matter? Maybe not right now. But someday there’ll be a verdict on crossover beauty when collectors look back to this era with either disdain or nostalgia. And I think a kinder eye will be cast toward the sedans of today than toward 2020s-era soccer-mom haulers.
