Lexus NX gets longer plug-in hybrid range and faster charging
Lexus has unveiled a major update for the NX, bringing revised styling, a redesigned interior and upgrades to both of its hybrid powertrains.
The current-generation NX was introduced in 2021, so this is a substantial mid-life update rather than an all-new model. The revised SUV will arrive in the UK in Spring next year, continuing to compete with premium family SUVs including the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. UK prices and final specifications will be announced closer to launch.
The biggest changes are found underneath. Both the NX ‘350h’ hybrid and NX ‘450h+’ plug-in hybrid adopt Lexus’s updated hybrid technology, while the latter gets a larger battery that significantly increases its electric range.
More than 60 miles of electric range
The NX ‘450h+’ plug-in hybrid gets a new 23kWh battery, replacing the current model’s 18kWh unit. Lexus expects this to increase electric range by almost 40% to more than 60 miles, although that figure remains provisional until the car completes WLTP homologation.
Power also increases to 303hp, while the 0-62mph time falls to 6.1 seconds. Towing capacity increases to 1,500kg.
For the first time on a Lexus plug-in hybrid, DC rapid charging is also supported. Lexus says a 10% to 80% charge will take around 30 minutes, although it hasn’t confirmed the maximum charging rate.
The conventional NX ‘350h’ hybrid continues with 196hp, but gets a redesigned and significantly lighter battery. Lexus says changes to the electrical components improve acceleration and efficiency, while towing capacity also increases to 1,500kg.
Revised exterior and redesigned dashboard
Styling changes include a new frameless version of Lexus’s familiar spindle grille, redesigned LED headlights and a new rear light arrangement incorporating an illuminated Lexus badge.
The alloy wheel designs have also been revised, while Lexus has removed exterior chrome detailing across the range. ‘F Sport’ models get their own black exterior trim, 20-inch wheels and red brake callipers.
Changes inside are more substantial, with the NX getting a completely redesigned dashboard and centre console. A 12-inch digital instrument display and 14-inch central touchscreen are now positioned at a similar height, while Lexus has introduced touch-sensitive controls that remain hidden until the driver reaches towards them.
The latest LexusConnect infotainment system and Lexus ‘Safety System+’ driver assistance package will be standard across the range.
Higher-specification versions will also be available with Lexus’s new ‘Sensory Concierge’, which coordinates the interior lighting, music, climate control, seat temperature and even an integrated fragrance system. Drivers can choose between three preset cabin environments, with 50 ambient lighting colours also available.
UK specs and pricing
Four trim levels have been announced for Europe – ‘Business’, ‘Executive’, ‘Luxury’ and ‘F Sport’ – although Lexus cautions that specifications will vary between markets.
All versions will come with heated and electrically adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel, powered tailgate, 12-inch instrument display and 14-inch touchscreen. Higher specifications add equipment including ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, head-up display and automated parking.
The updated Lexus NX is due to arrive in the UK in spring 2027. UK prices, trim levels and final specifications will be announced at a later date.
