GM’s Monstrous 8.3-Liter Duramax Just Put Ford’s 6.7-Liter Power Stroke On Notice
General Motors just released one of the strangest truck teasers we have seen in years. It opens in the desert, where a scorpion quickly discovers that it is no longer the most dangerous creature in the sand. A mongoose attacks, GM declares it “stronger and faster than the scorpion,” and an enormous diesel engine comes roaring into view.
That engine is the new 8.3-liter Duramax, internally known as the Mongoose. GM says it will power the upcoming 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, but it has not revealed the numbers yet. Still, this teaser tells us plenty about exactly which rival GM intends to hunt.
The Mongoose Name Is A Direct Shot At Ford
The desert battle is almost certainly more than dramatic marketing. Scorpion was the development codename for Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, which currently powers the Super Duty.
That makes GM’s claim that the Mongoose is “stronger and faster than the Scorpion” an unusually blatant shot at Ford. The symbolism could hardly be clearer. The mongoose in GM’s video defeats the scorpion, and the automaker appears to be promising that its new Duramax will do the same to Ford’s Power Stroke.
Ford’s high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke currently produces 500 horsepower and a massive 1,200 lb-ft of torque. GM’s existing 6.6-liter Duramax makes 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft, leaving the Silverado HD and Sierra HD noticeably behind Ford in the ongoing diesel numbers war.
The 8.3-liter Mongoose may be GM’s attempt to erase that gap in one extremely large step.
GM Has Not Revealed The Specs Yet
Beyond its 8.3-liter displacement and Duramax branding, GM is keeping the technical details locked away. Rumors surrounding GM’s next heavy-duty diesel have suggested a larger-displacement V8 with major upgrades to its turbocharging, cooling and fuel-delivery systems, but none of those details have been officially confirmed.
The displacement alone is shocking. Moving from 6.6 liters to 8.3 liters would give the Mongoose roughly 26 percent more capacity than the current Duramax. It would also make the engine considerably larger than Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke and Ram’s 6.7-liter Cummins.
That extra displacement could give GM enough room to chase, or potentially exceed, the Power Stroke’s 1,200 lb-ft output without relying entirely on more turbo boost. Considering the wording of the teaser, anything below Ford’s current figures would feel like a major anticlimax.
More power could also push GM beyond the current Silverado HD’s maximum available towing capacity of 36,000 pounds. However, horsepower, torque, towing capacity, transmission details and fuel-economy figures remain unconfirmed for now.
The 2027 Silverado HD And Sierra HD Could Reset The Diesel War
The Mongoose will appear in both the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and the more upscale 2027 GMC Sierra HD. We expect the trucks to receive styling and technology updates alongside the new engine, although GM has not yet shown their complete designs.
The Silverado HD will likely remain the more work-focused member of the family, while the Sierra HD should continue offering luxurious Denali and Denali Ultimate variants. Off-road ZR2 and AT4X versions should also return, potentially turning the Mongoose into something buyers can use for towing, luxury or desert punishment.
For now, GM has revealed only enough to start a fight. The company created an 8.3-liter Duramax, named it after one of the scorpion’s natural enemies and then showed that predator winning on camera. Ford should probably take the hint.
