Dodge Demon 170 Owner Talks Serious Trash Before Racing A Corvette ZR1X
A Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 owner is allowed to feel confident at a drag strip. His car was built to launch violently, and it has the numbers to back up the attitude. So, when this owner said he would smoke a Corvette ZR1X, it sounded like the start of a proper fight. Then it all went to hell.
The Demon delivered the most dramatic moment of the race right away, lifting its front wheels as it launched. The Corvette’s response was less theatrical and considerably more painful for the Dodge.
Demon 170 Owner Talks Big Before The Race
The owner’s prediction is what makes the clip work. Had the two cars simply lined up and raced, the result would have been another quick-car-versus-quick-car video. Instead, he told the ZR1X owner he was going to smoke him, putting his own confidence on the line before either car moved.
To be fair, he had a formidable car. Dodge rates the Demon 170’s supercharged 6.2-liter V8 at up to 1,025 horsepower on E85 and recorded an NHRA-certified 8.91-second quarter-mile for the model. It was engineered for exactly the kind of launch shown in the reel, and the wheelie made it look, briefly, as though the prediction might come true.
The Corvette ZR1X Has An Answer
The ZR1X is a nasty car to challenge, even if you own a Demon. Chevrolet combines a twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric front motor for 1,250 horsepower and all-wheel drive. Chevy lists an available 8.99-second quarter-mile at 157 mph, putting the two cars’ published times remarkably close while giving the Corvette a higher listed trap speed. Those manufacturer figures describe their own test runs, though, not the cars or conditions in this reel.
In the video, the Demon gets its spectacular launch, but the Corvette takes over the race and pulls clear. The “BYE BYE” is the punchline the owner handed it when he made his prediction. The Short doesn’t give us enough to judge either car’s full potential, but it gives us everything needed to judge this particular boast.
A Wheelie Wasn’t Enough To Win
That is the brutal part for the Demon owner. His car did something most drivers would celebrate for weeks, and it still wasn’t the moment anyone will remember most. The ZR1X drove away with the win, while the Dodge owner drove away with a reminder that calling your shot makes the replay a lot harder to watch.
The Demon 170 remains one of the wildest factory drag cars America has produced. This time, though, its owner talked first, launched hard, and watched the Corvette say goodbye.
