Dainese has unveiled its latest entry-level airbag system dubbed the Smart GO, an airbag the brand says is designed for everyday street riding. Priced at $409 in the United States, the new Smart GO joins the versatile Smart Air vest and race-track-focused D-Air Racing unit, as the most affordable option in the current lineup.

Inside or Out: Your Choice

According to Dainese, the Smart GO weighs 780 grams, or about 1.7 pounds, including the gas generator, making it one of the lighter units on the market. Dainese says this is close to half the weight of its previous lightest airbag. The vest uses an open design similar to that of a life preserver, which does have advantages in terms of breathability. However, eagle-eyed readers may note that coverage is not as extensive, specifically with respect to the shoulders.

It comes in one size and adjusts with straps to fit different body types. Conveniently, it can be worn over or under any motorcycle jacket or a casual jacket, and it does not require a separate rigid back protector. With no rigid armor to speak of, the unit can easily be rolled up and stowed away in luggage or a backpack.

One interesting feature and likely reason for its featherweight claims is that the Smart GO airbag does not use a conventional built-in battery system. Instead, it is powered through a USB-C cable stored in its large pocket, connected either to a smartphone that supports USB OTG power output or to the optional Dainese Power Bank, which sells for $49. Dainese rates the power bank at up to 72 hours of use. Dainese has not said how much smartphone battery the vest uses per hour of riding. Riders configure the vest and check its status through the Dainese D-air app.

Protection, Accessories and Pricing

Smart GO is certified to Level 2 of the EN 1621-4 standard for inflatable protectors on both the chest and back. The vest has no physical connection to the motorcycle. Its sensors and Dainese’s D-air algorithm, which the company says is set up for road riding and light off-road use, detect a crash and trigger inflation within milliseconds. An internal structure Dainese calls Diaframma is intended to inflate the bag evenly across the covered area.

After a deployment, the owner can replace the gas generator without returning the vest to Dainese. Spare generators cost $79 each, and each vest accepts up to three replacements.

Dainese also offers a 15-liter water-resistant backpack for $149 that attaches to Smart GO with magnetic clips. It has an organizer, a laptop pocket and an external pocket, and can be worn as a standard backpack off the bike. Bought together, the vest, backpack and power bank total $607 before tax.

Dainese has not confirmed U.S. availability yet, but we’ll update this story accordingly.
