ToggleThe Volkswagen ID. Polo is a small electric hatchback that brings one of Britain’s most familiar car names into the electric era. Now available to order, the range has a choice of two battery sizes. A more powerful ID. Polo GTI is also planned.
The ID. Polo enters a market that has changed dramatically in recent years. Small electric cars were once relatively expensive and offered limited choice, but buyers can now choose from a rapidly growing selection of models, including the Renault 5 E-Tech, BYD Dolphin, Kia EV2 and several new Chinese arrivals. Volkswagen therefore faces considerably more competition than it did when its first electric ID. models appeared.
Nevertheless, Parkers’ Ted Welford calls the Volkswagen a “brilliant addition” to the supermini class, that is “more refined, comfortable and better-made” than many of its rivals. Alastair Crooks of Auto Express similarly concludes that the ID. Polo is a “seriously impressive small electric car”, with “understated style, plenty of practicality and excellent driving dynamics.”
The Car Expert’s own Matt MacConnell found the ID. Polo comfortable, efficient and surprisingly enjoyable on winding roads, with strong performance from the more powerful versions. There are some limitations to rear headroom, while the interior design is rather plain.
The ID. Polo looks competitively priced in entry-level form, but higher-specification versions can cost considerably more, bringing them into competition with larger and more spacious alternatives.
As of November 2026, the Volkswagen ID. Polo holds a New Car Expert Rating of A, with a score of 70%. Besides overwhelmingly positive review scores from UK motoring outlets, this overall score is helped by low running cost estimations. The car is yet to be crash tested by safety body Euro NCAP, and when it does happen, the confirmation of solid safety credentials would increase this score further.
