This 1977 Pontiac Can Am is for sale in Olathe, Kansas, and the seller says it’s been tucked away in a barn since 1995. That alone would be a cool find. What makes it special is that only 1,377 of these were ever built, and the whole program died because of one broken spoiler mold. No, not joking. Rusty quarters and all, it’s yours for $11,000.

How A Broken Spoiler Killed The Pontiac Can Am

The Can Am is one of those lesser-known muscle cars that deserves a lot more attention. Based on the LeMans, it borrowed the shaker hood scoop from the Firebird Trans Am and added its own fiberglass ducktail spoiler and some pretty cool graphics. Under the hood sat the Trans Am’s W72 400 ci V8, rated at 200 hp. That doesn’t sound like much today, but in the smog-choked late ’70s, it was serious stuff. Pontiac planned to build 2,500 Can Ams, and buyers ordered more than 5,000. Then the mold for that spoiler broke, and instead of fixing it, Pontiac pulled the plug. Final tally, 1,377 cars. That’s a lot of very disappointed buyers.

According to the seller, this particular Can Am has been sitting in a barn since 1995. It has 106,073 miles on the clock and is described as an all-original, unrestored example. There’s some good news under that shaker scoop, too. The seller says the car still has its original Y6 400 V8, connected to a TH400 automatic transmission and a 3.08 posi rear end. Even better, it reportedly runs and drives, and it’s just had a new starter. Not bad for a car that spent three decades napping.

The body does need some love. The rear quarter panels are crusty, although the seller says the trunk is rust-free, the car has never been wrecked and it still wears its original sheet metal. It also comes with all four original 15×7 Rally wheels, which saves the next owner a hunt through swap meets. The seller is asking $11,000 and says the car comes with a clean title. It’s loaded, too, with power windows, power locks, tilt, cruise control, air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. It even has an AM/FM eight-track stereo, so dust off those Fleetwood Mac tapes.

Of course, anyone thinking about buying it should get underneath and check for rust before making an offer. The quarters already need attention, and three decades in a barn can hide a few nasty surprises. The next owner has a choice to make. Bring this rare Pontiac all the way back, or sort the mechanicals and drive it as a scruffy survivor. Either way, we’d love to see another Can Am back out on the road.
