Mercedes-Benz is trimming five vehicles from its lineup for the 2027 model year, and the most surprising casualty is the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance. Dropping it leaves the S-Class without an AMG variant for the first time in years, a notable gap at the top of Mercedes’ sedan range.

The other cuts are less shocking but still significant. The entire EQE Sedan lineup is going away, along with the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV, though the Maybach EQS sedan sticks around. Together, that’s five distinct vehicles disappearing as Mercedes reshapes its electric strategy and moves away from the EQ naming scheme entirely.

The AMG S63 E Performance Loses Its Spot In The S-Class Lineup

The Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance has been the only performance-oriented option in the S-Class range, pairing a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with a plug-in hybrid system for a combined 791 horsepower and 1,055 lb-ft of torque. With it gone for 2027, S-Class buyers who want AMG-grade output simply won’t have the option anymore.

There’s not much to replace it with directly. The only real competitor in this niche is the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, with the Bentley Flying Spur Speed sitting a notch above on price and prestige. Current S63 owners shouldn’t expect an immediate successor with a different powertrain, though it wouldn’t be surprising if the S63 name eventually returns in some form.

The EQE sedan launched for 2023 as the electric counterpart to the gas E-Class, but all three variants, the EQE 350+, EQE 320 4Matic, and AMG EQE, are being discontinued. With 308 miles of range, derivative styling, and lackluster performance, the EQE struggled to compete with the BMW i4, BMW i5, and Audi A6 e-tron, all of which offer more compelling packages at similar price points.

The Maybach EQS 680 SUV faces a similar fate, though the EQS sedan survives. The SUV has decent range but falls short on driving dynamics, styling, and a cabin that leans too hard on touchscreens. Shoppers looking at large electric SUVs have better options in the Lucid Gravity, Porsche Cayenne Electric, BMW iX , Volvo EX90, Rivian R1S, and Cadillac VISTIQ.

What Current Owners And Shoppers Should Do Now

Owners of the EQE sedan, Maybach EQS SUV, or S63 E Performance shouldn’t see any immediate disruption to parts, service, or warranty coverage, since discontinued models typically keep factory support for years. The bigger concern is resale value, as discontinued EVs tend to depreciate faster once a successor lineup takes over the spotlight.

For shoppers still eyeing these models, the incentives are hard to ignore. Mercedes doubled its Maybach EQS discount in September to $70,000, making it one of the steepest markdowns on a Mercedes product in recent memory. Anyone considering the EQE or EQS SUV should weigh those discounts against the stronger range, driving feel, and tech found in rival EVs.

Mercedes Is Betting On EVs That Look Like Regular Mercedes

While these five vehicles are exiting, Mercedes isn’t stepping back from EVs. The automaker is rolling out new electric versions of the C-Class , CLA-Class, and GLC-Class SUV that ditch the separate EQ styling in favor of looking like their gas-powered siblings. The 2027 GLC400 4Matic Electric, for example, makes 483 horsepower, delivers an EPA-rated 350 miles of range, and starts at $64,950, a notably lower price than the EQE’s discounted asking price. It’s a clear signal that Mercedes sees more value in EVs that resemble the rest of the lineup than in standalone electric sub-brands.
